Heresy Era Work: Custodes, Part 1

I decided to build a squad of the emperor's custodes for our heresy era campaign. Starting with the very nice Space Marine veteran box, I removed their guns and heads (once again, the dremel is a life saver). The head and halberd (spear) are from the fantasy high elf warrior box and the combi-bolter is off the old rhinos. The shoulderpads were beefed up with some plasticard. Throw in a dash of filing and a pinch of greenstuff and it was good to go.

I'm not sure how they should be based. Anyone have any good ideas? I'm hoping to get at least one of them painted over the long weekend.

For basing I think something simple that doesn't distract from the model would work nicely.

Perhaps some tiled floor. Or flagstones. I can imagine that being pretty common around the palace. Another option would be some sort of smooth flooring (think marble without the marble swirls).

Good luck with the painting over the weekend!

If these Custodians continue to be popular, those high elf head sprues are gonna go into short supply!

(Recall the first incarnation, using the Grey Knight rules)

The custodes gold color scheme might look strange on a light-colored base. I like the idea of tiles or stone to match with the palace theme though. How about a slab of dark/black/grey marble? You could make it by swirling together black and grey oven-hardening clay and baking it in a 25mm log that you could saw a bunch of bases from. A little gloss varnish and it might look real nice.

Something that the folks over at the Reaper Miniatures Forum ususally suggest that the base should be like a picture frame and should be used to compliment the miniature. If you use cool colors only in the base and basing then you run the risk of having your base standing apart from your figure. Use warm colors, like a yellow or red sandstone for the base. Tiles would be cool also, but once again terra cotta or pink granite tile will be better than cool colored marble.

The rules for the Custodes are sick! You really ought to put them on the termi-bases... atleast that is what I am going to do.
