~Happy holidays all! Look what Santa left on our doorstep:
Ok, since its Christmas I'll spill what little I know.
(...) It just feels like years of developing the game for strict tournament play is no longer the focus of the game...now it’s more about fun and creativity as we've witnessed with Apocalypse...and will see with...PLANETSTRIKE!
Yes, Planetstrike is the name of the next supplement (unless someone at GW reads this, gets mad and changes it out of spite). It’s about taking the game into the 3rd dimension (Waa?). This is why you’ve been hearing about a deepstrike book; but it’s much more than that! It is about adding flyers and drop pods into the game but also about fighting missions with a clear attacker/defender. I’m sure this has been said before elsewhere so consider this another “confirmation” if you will. There will be a plastic SM drop pod that can also be a chaos deathclaw (I think that’s what it’s called). There will be plastic storm troopers (look like kasrkin) and a plastic valkyrie. The Valkyrie may even be available as a transport in the next guard codex. There are also several new terrain kits in the works. A landing pad, a defence laser and a bunker. All of these can be combined to create a fortification and it goes without saying that they are compatible with the current CoD building sets. There are some other things I’ve heard about Planetstrike, but I’m waiting for a second source to confirm them before I spill.
Planetstrike will be released at GDUK AFIK since 5th will now be out at the beginning of the summer (they switched places for some reason). (...)
~Also confirmed (again) a little after the fact was the rumored plastic Thunderhawk being planned along with Planetstrike. Damn you GW, everytime I try to get out...you drag me back in! A shiny new 5th Edition in only a few months then this! :)

OMG, plastic Valkyrie! I am soooo in heaven. I wasn't planning on attending GDUK, but now..... I think I better save a few holidays at work for this!
well i'll definetley be adding some of that terrain to my ruined city, but no new eldar :(
lol, better start saving money now. looks like GW is about to get a bunch again :)
i will have to say that they done much to revitalize the game since 4th ed came out.
Plastic t-hawk would be very nice. I've been on the fence for buying one from FW for quite a while now, now I know I merely have to wait. Is this supposed to be its own expansion, or a tie-in to Apocalypse?
@anonymous #2 its an seperate expanision AFAIK. I so many GW things, so little money.....
Oh, sod.
I was all fired up to go Orky next month, but I would much rather save my money and assemble a force of Valk-mounted elite guardsmen. The Marines may be the Imperium's best and brightest, but they're not the only ones who can drop in and kick the heresy out of some cultist scum.
I'd been considering retooling my Guard force as grenadiers, but I'm not a huge fan of Chimeras, and footsloggers would be better off with plain Guardsmen.. Looks like that one's sorted, now all I need is the money for half a dozen squads in Valkyries and a pair of Vultures...
@ previous poster -- just loot the valkyries when they come out ;)
Well, either this is great information or completely wrong. My GW sources have not heard anything about this coming out. I have heard it was planned but scrapped.
I think with the energy and enthusiasm that met APOC, GW would be silly not to release these new models.
Plastic Kasrkin?!?!... cool. It'd be nice if they did some Plastic Inquisitorial ST's as well, but hey, they've got a lot to do already.
So, if you work at GW, and have control over this kinda stuff, pretty please go ahead with these ideas!
Jeff.
Plastic Thunderhawk, thank you GW for answering my fervent prayers.
The Plentstrike idea sounds good, I've always enjoyed games where I've managed to shoe-horn half my army to be deep-striking, hopefully this will fit nicely with Apocalypse and add to the fun.
@Neil, the talk previously was something like "Codex: Orbital Assault," as a 40K expansion, so this seems pretty clearly what that previous title referred to.
I'll be interested to see how this goes, and plastic droppers would be nice.
Palstic thunderhawk, valkyrie, dropppd..
All that I want!!
After asking my sources, I would not suggest holding your breath for this. I will keep my ear to the ground.
Honestly, I'm not sure I want plastic Drop Pods - at least not with the current rules. I'm pretty happy with their relative scarcity.
Games against Drop Pods are either short and boring (they come in late or slowly) or they are tedious and boring (they come in all at once and my opponent has to setup his entire army in my midst on turn 2).
They are one of those armies that are more fun to play then play against. I'm one of those players that feel like too much of one thing (deep strike, infiltration, mechanization) causes balance issues. And balance issues usually lead to "fun" issues.
Sweet now this is going to be fun.
@mkerr,
I'll put it like this: if a model is a standard option for THE main army of the game, then GW ought to be making a model for it, and in plastic, not resin. If the rules for the drop pod make it less fun to play with when people use them as commonly as the rules allow, then it's the rules that need work-- and C:SM is due for a rewrite this year anyway, isn't it?
But look at the rules for Dark/Blood Angels drop pods closely. Although the Pods themselves are more points they are actually significantly more powerful.
They're missing the big section on must immeadiatly deploy, and can't get back in rule. I would dread going up against a Marine player with cleanse and purify and dreadnoughts in droppods who stays in them and just blasts out. as long as they can take out heavy weapons quickly the marines inside can all rapidfire out to their hearts content.
I'm definitly in agreement with Mekrr on this one. ALL of one thing usually results in frustrating play. On the other hand, Eth is right, theres NO reason a standard transport for the most popular army shouldn't be in plastic.
I think it'd be interesting to see if the droppod will be more of a planetfall option, or will be somehow limited as a transport for normal games. Not being able to use them in games that don't allow deepstrike would hamper the amount of all pod armies, but still worth the risk of taking them for a few things,
It's almost to early to speculate though. The rumored release of a new Rulebook, and an Apocalypse style book with deepstrike as a theme AND a new SM book means that drop pods could really do about anything at this point, and will almost certainly do something different then they do right now.
@kevin
To repeat, it's the rules that need work, not the models. All GW would need to do is put a single sentence in the main FAQ: "Yes, all the rules for Drop Pods in C:SM apply to all Drop Pods no matter what Codex they're in."
And even on BA/DA pods, hit them with a Penetrating hit once and much of your problem is solved, as the marines pile out and spend a turn doing nothing.
Any heavy weapon that hides inside can't shoot on the turn it arrives (since they have deep struck and therefore count as having moved).
If the marines climb back inside again, and I hope they do, then that's another turn in which the heavy weapon does nothing and the bolters Rapid Fire at 12".
As an immobile vehicle, HTHs hit it automatically, and it's open-topped, so destroying it is going to be pretty easy.
Ultimately, this is akin to arguing that, since the 3e Rhino Rush was problematic, there should be no plastic Rhinos for sale. It just doesn't wash.
As a Steel Brethren player, it will be nice to actually be able to do the second half of my renegade Chapter's specialism, that being drop pod assaults. Unlike regular SM however i'll only be able to use them in Battlezone: Planetstrike missions so less balance concerns. The rhinos will still remain.
I dunno. I've never been one to trust rumors, and this speaks of 'too good to be true'. I'm not getting my hopes up. this way ill be plesently suprised when it turns out to be true. :P

No arguements there.
It'll be interesting to see if deepstriking vehicles are explained right in 5th ed. as opposed to just counting as moving transports.
Plastic Thunderhawk, woot!!!
Kevin: oh come on, you can't be serious with that "we don't have itexplicitly written there, so we don't have to disembark or we can embark again on the pod."
Sheesh, use a bit of healthy common sense instead of exploiting the silly concept of "RAW" which actually is IMO the main source of arguments and much troubles wouldn't be there if so-called "competitive" players (in my words: suckers who wouldn't win without twisting a particular rule interpretation into any slight advantage for themselves) stopped doing all that rule-lawyering.
So of course the DA and BA Drop Pods should work exactly the same as SM Pods do.
i cant wait for the plastic gunship. finaly gonna be able to complete my 2nd company SM =>
thunderhawk -- boy oh boy!
im gonna ditch tau 4 a while and go back to DA
Not to be a pessimist, but GW putting out a plastic Thunderhawk?! We'd be looking at a $350-$400 limited-edition kit from a company that essentially just obliterated its online store for financial reasons. Maybe I'm just bitter for having shelled out $700 for the Forge World version late last year. Speaking of which, what exactly is GW's business plan with FW? They hardly seem to be on the same page when Apocalypse was released, and if they're going to continue to release cheaper, easier to obtain plastics of the FW kits, FW days may be numbered.
FW is a subsidiary of GW, so GW can supersede anything they produce. Also rememebr that the GW Baneblade was actually larger than the FW for a fraction of the price. I am interested in seeing the cost of the plastic thunderhawk though, especially since I have 2 of the old metals ones lying about and those retailed for £200 when they were released!
defense laser was confirmed at Glen Burnie on January 31st.
I play both guard and sm and if this is all true then GW is my hero... plastic fliers is like my dream!
