We have a double dose of Necron goodness today. First we have 2 new Necron Datasheets featuring the Necron Obelisk (brought over from Epic) and then we have step by step instructions on how you can build your own 40k scale Obelisk.
Specialist Games released rules for playing Necrons in Epic a while back. You can find them here: http://www.specialist-games.com/epic/Vault.asp. In there they have the description for a Necron unit called an Obelisk (not to be confused with the Obelisks in Dawn of War). It is described is a flatted cube with a power crystal in the center. They include this wonderful picture as their guide to modeling one ;)
In the epic list they use Obelisks in two ways, as a scout force and as a Monolith escort. Our first datasheet is for the Obelisk as a scout unit. It is basic a unit of 1 to 3 Obelisks in a vehicle formation. The second formation is a bit more interesting.
Necrons don't really get to have any super heavies. I wanted to give the Necron player the ability to field a superheavy unit without having to build or buy anything too crazy. The Apsis formation allows the Necron player to have some of the benefits of a super heavy, without actually having a super heavy.
We have included both of these Datasheets in our BoLS Lords of Battle download. You can get it here.
Building the Obelisk
The Obelisk can be divided into 3 layers, the top and bottom being 5" square and the middle being 6".
This template shows the top layer in grey and the middle layer in white.
Next, cut four 1.5" x 1" sections of plasticard. Glue these onto the bottoms of the four sections you just attached. You should have 4 "shelves" now.
Next, cut out four 1.5" sections of sprue. You may need to trim down and file off parts of the sprue to get a single, uninterrupted piece. It is also important to get all 4 sections from the same piece of sprue, as not all sprue are equal. Put these 4 pieces under the edge where the center diamond was cut out.
Cut a 1.5" x 1.5" square of plasticard and glue it on the underside of these sprue sections creating another lowered shelf in the center.
Once the sprue pieces are in place, you can move onto the top detail. For this section I printed out the template from the beginning of this article and glued it to a thin sheet of plasticard. I used spray adhesive to get an even stick across the sheet. Once it dries, cut the pieces out of the pattern and glue them on one at a time. It is important to start from each corner and work towards the center. This ensures that the pieces have the best fit.
Once you cut out a piece, you will need to trim the edges to create a gap between it and the other pieces of the design. Don't worry too much about pieces hanging over the edge. You can file those down later to get a good fit.
Now, create another 4 spacers. These should be 1/2" tall. Use them to attach the bottom layer.
Once you have the sides glued on, you will need to work on the inset section in the middle of each side. You will need four 1" x 1" sections for the top and four 1" x 3/4" sections for the bottom. There will be a gap between these sections and the side section you just attached. Cut small sections of thin plasticard to fill in these gaps (I think you need a 1/4" x 1" rhombus shape for the top, but it is best to just eyeball this section and file down any excess).
You are almost done. Use this template to create the side details (again, you may need to make them slightly wider or shorter depending on your exact model). There are 2 layers that you will place on top of the sides. The first layer has the corner piece and an L shaped piece. The second layer has 2 shorter 'bars' that go on top of the corner piece.
To make the Obelisk "hover" I took some leftover sprue sections and placed them under the obelisk near the center. You may want to stack them to make it a bit higher off the ground.
Congratulations, you are now the proud owner of a Necron Obelisk.
"But what about the green Crystal in the middle?"
I'm glad you asked. The Container Store (containerstore.com) sells small translucent green boxes for about $0.39 each. If you don't have a Container Store near where you live, you can order one here . Make sure you pick the smallest one.
Once you have the "crystal" you can either use the base of the box (turned upside down) or the lid. Personally, I think the lid works better, but I tried it both ways. Glue it to the recessed center of your Obelisk and you are ready for your toaster revolution! I'm sure most Necron players already know this, but many glues will create a fog on translucent plastics. Choose your glue wisely.
If you have any other questions or if some of the instructions were unclear, leave a message in the comments section and we'll clear it up

Am I dense, or is the pdf for the datasheet not up yet?
Sigh. I was there when the idea for that unit came up. I didn't like it then, and I don't like it now.
ESPECIALLY that dumb design. Obelisks are tall spires. The Washington monument is an Obelisk.
No, the PDF is packaged as part of their Lords of Battle download. The link is conveniently hidden halfway down in the post.
Awesome datasheets for us Necron players. How about a datasheet for the Abattoir!?! :)
Pretty neat, though I agree an obelisk type design would fit it better. The rules are quite cool though.
So, when are you going to give the Sisters of Battle some lovin'? Don't say they can use Titans etc.; the Guard and Marines get some specific love, so I don't see why the girls can't get some neat tricks! :)

@grog You know the epic GW designers? cool! Can you get them to release more ork stuff?
Great work on the rules and the model, fellas.
I second the call for an Abbatoir and some Sisters lovin' (mobile cathedral!) whenever you guys get around to it. Supporting (hell, even creating) stuff that's not in GW's list of favorites is what makes you the best 40K fan site on the web.
Nice. But...
I do find (as mentioned) the design a bit non-obelisk-like.
And isnt the formation a bit cheap?
PS...i just looked through the rest of the data sheets on the lords of battle pdf, and i find the knight titan a bit weak compared to its point cost? just me?
And the super lifta droppa states that units take 2d6 wounds. Is that with saves allowed?
What about hellhammer, nurglereaper, shadowsword and so on formations?
(it dosnt seem fair that the baneblade is the only superheavy tank with a formation?)
Yeah, I have no idea why GW designed a unit called 'Obelisk' and said it should be flat as a pancake.
The other option would be to use a really, really tall 'power crystal' in the middle.
I think it's pretty good. Seeing as they are flat I could perhaps accept some criticism. However, we could alter the design slightly so they could be stackable. Those containers come in quite tall sizes. We could have a tall one and perhaps up to three Obelisks and form some kind of speciality such as one does the guns, the other teleports and if you have a third it adds range or chucks a vortex grenade once per game or acts as a personal transport for a C'Tan.
Frankly we've already seen a really tall mega monolith thing from GW which I think france made or another of the international divisions. This is different and sneaky!
Haha! This sure brings back a lot of memories from when we did the necron list on the old specialist games forum. I came up with two units for it; The Æonic Orb and the Obelisk.
Another guy did an Abattoir, which was something of a large monolith. Didn't like it though.. hehe.
Epic was being made by players for other players... NOT a GW design team.
Funny to see how the current obelisk has nothing to do with the sketches I did back then, which in fact was an obelisk. Called so as a gesture to the obelisk's of the egyptians (necrons being strangely egyptized at times).
I can't figure out why people have turned it into a flat thing instead of a well.. an obelisk.
But still funny to see that these old epic ideas actually survived for so long.
Here's the thread of the initial inception of the obelisk in epic:

@ Gade
I think the formation for its points is very fair. Have you ever seen the Wind Rider Squadron kill an entire 9 Basilisk Artillery Company with Flank March? Yeah, the Wind Rider Squadron is WAY cheap, the Necron sheets, relatively fair.
I think the model looks good but it costs too little. I think it should cost 200 points and the power matrix should allow it move and fire, ignor shaken and stunned results and to repair either a weapon destroyed or imobilised result on a 4+ at the end of the necron player's turn instead ignoring all weapon destroyed results.
Huh, looks like the top of an xbox console. Scrap one and put a crystal in place of the xbox logo- perhaps?
Or just use an original xbox.
Ive faced the falcon formation once, but never the wind rider. And I didnt manage to do anything to it at all, they just whouldnt die. Pretty crazy.
I dont think the obelisks should be more expensive. Afterall, then you just might take more monoliths and get 14/14/14, portal and flux for mere 60 points ekstra.
Afterall, necron realy needs the ekstra resilience for the monoliths in apocalypse. And necron dosnt have anything in the point range from 65 to 235. And that is quite a pain some times.
So (pankage) obelisks is a great idear, besides the design!
Why isnt the design changed to something easy to make? like the obelisk that were in one of the fantasy terrain packeges?
The one in the back...the pointy one...
http://nemesis.uk.games-workshop.com/products/images/WH_ruins.jpg
another idear whould be to make a stone hendge thing that was a depp striking power portal. Something like warp rift just for necrons.
And then make it more crazy than the regular portals...
@Gade
Your last idea is good. That's pretty much what the obelisk was meant to be from the start: nails hammering down into the landscape from space letting out warriors en masse.
Dig the model, actually like it quite a bit more than the GeeDub monolith meself. Points and stats are good, looks to be largely an implacable, deep striking vindicator (with that same irritating ability to snipe characters with the AP1 hole :P).
As to the cries of dumb naming, BoLS hardly had control over that little GW design team burp ...

oh no. that would 1) be WAY too big, and 2) possibly break the table.
\xbox ftw

I think it's a cool model, but yes it could look more Obelisk type. But, think of LoS rules. You really can't see this one unless your on open ground... Very helpful sometimes.
It looks great. But I would like to see some other models for scale comparison.
And if there would be a top-down view, I could even include it as a graphic for our Vassal40k module, so people could playtest them.
Name is not right, but same is true for Monolith or Pylon.
I would serve you for one full month (no questions asked) if you guys did anything for Sisters of Battle. This is one of the best armies out there (fluff-wise) yet get's no lovin from GW at all... Cool that I have Necrons to fall back on ;)
@Dark Scipio- It is the same dimentions as the base of the monolith.
@Artur from Chicago- sure, come on down to Texas and wash our cars and I'm sure we can come up with something for the sisters :)
...on the other hand - an Aspis as pictured in your PDF would run close to (almost) 1000pts... Seems rather expensive, no?
About washing cars: first I think I need to see some sample designs for SOB goodness...
Trust me Artur,
Something quite nice for Sisters is just around the corner...
As always looking good. I saw your model awhile back and had wondered what it was about, now I know.
Sister Goodness?
How about the most pimped out ride they could possibly get - an Imperator! It's got a chapel like construct (the sensorium) already on it - just needs the lovely nuns with guns to purge any heritics that get too close to the "walking machine god wearing a cathedral"....
...Just to make sure: Obelisk does not have the "Ponderous" rule so can move 12 as any other skimmer? Have you gentleman experimented with it for regular games (non-Apocalypse)? The 60pts difference does not seem to justify (3 extra warriors for 1 less armor all around, no Flux Arc and no teleport) it over the Lith for regular games. Perhaps 155ish would be appropriate? Or do you find the extra move makes it fair?
@ Anonymous
Its a Apoc datasheet. Why whould you even consider using it in a regular game?
Ive once had a 2000 point game using one of my baneblades. A regular 40k army dosnt stand a chance. Trust me.
Apoc formations and unique tanks dossnt fit into regular 40k.
Obelisks are nice, but drop them, and for a few points more add another monolith?
As for the SoBs, I would love something cool for them. A huge holy tank, or a chapel, with like a million fire points, and you can put a battalion in there, and they can all rapid fire, or... (rant rant rant.)
Communist
A sisters of battle baneblade maybe?
No, the Obelisk was part of Jervis' open source initiative for Epic, before Specialist Games got axed. Each army list got a forum, a 'champion', and had pretty serious playtesting occur. All feedback went through the forums.
Monoliths were classed as superheavy vehicles (as were Land Raiders), albeit the smallest possible, and were quite expensive due to the Portal they carried. Necrons seemed to need a lesser, cheaper vehicle without a flux arc or portal. So the champion pretty much invented the Obelisk, which was a particle whip on a stick. I assume a designer somewhere just kinda kept it. This process also created the Necron formation names, which were mine.
I argued against the design, same as I argued against the name for the other titan-class unit. Anyway, that pretty much all died with Specialist Games. A shame, the rules were really pretty good.
SOB BBlade? Have one already...

We need some formations for Immis or Exorcists (Incendiary ammunition to burn heretics?), Council of 4 major Orders (some special HQ perhaps), Crusade formation with some priest goodness (make priests useful again), New Act of Faith if some unit combination is taken, perhaps Wave of Penitents (Engines?) of some sorts, Inquisitorial Exterminatus with powerful orbital bombardment, Witch Anathema that cripples enemy psykers or makes the Perils of the Warp more common and dangerous, Sacrificial unit of Arco Flagellants that set themselves on fire, Special power that allows to test for Acts of Faith against your Canoness’ Ld value….. For radical Inquisitors we could allow for more powerful Daemonhosts even… So many options here besides just a Super Heavy... The most useful would be Datafexes that can be used without building a 3 foot Cathedral model from scratch, as not everyone would be able to undertake such project. However, if that monstrosity on wheels from the WH Dex would be playable…. Having faith in the BoLS creativity here!!!
For the record: The units listed in the Epic Necron list were created at the request of Jervis, as was the list itself. It won't be FULLY official until after it's done and approved, but the work was done for Specialist games. I expect they will have their own ideas about how the new units will look.
But that one does look pretty sweet!
I like the obelisk, any chance of a datasheet for The Void Dragon, the c'tan in stasis on Mars? I'm currently working on him.
By the way, if a monolith, like that extremely tall pointy thing in London, is pyramid-shaped, why can't an obelisk be flat?
Also, it would be cool to see three stuck together on top of eachother to make like a Monument?
Anyway, that pretty much all died with Specialist Games. A shame, the rules were really pretty good.
I would not call it "dead" exactly!

Are these datasheets legit in regular 40k apocalypse battles? I couldn't find it in any of it in Apocalypse or Apocalypse Reload, nor in the Imperial Armour Apocalypse. Maybe they're just for fun, but anyways, awesome ideas.
Hye its a xbox
Where else can I find the fullsize sheets? All the links are out of date.
