RUMORS: 5th Edition Content Details

This information brought to the community by Warseer's: chiaroscuros

~Passing this news on in its unaltered form:

According to Games Workshop USA Sales Representative Mark Koscielniak, the new Warhammer 40k 5th Edition Starter Boxed Set will include a “Crap-Ton of miniatures”.

The new boxed starter, due out in September of this year, will include the popular “mini-rulebook”, dice, measuring sticks and the proverbial French “Crap-Ton” of miniatures including:
1– Space Marine Commander (full sprue)
1– Space Marine Tactical Squad (10 models)
1– Space Marine Terminator Squad (5 models)
1– Space Marine Dreadnought

AND THAT’S NOT ALL!
The set will ALSO include:

1– Ork Warboss
2– Ork Boyz Mobs (20 models total)
1– Ork Nob Mob (5 models)
3– Death Koptas

The retail price on this tremendous deal will be a ridiculously low $59.99! A quick analysis of the retail value of this set is valued at a cool $262 bucks, and that’s not even counting the retail value of the 3 Death Koptas, the “mini-rulebook”, or the dice!
The new 5th Edition starter will be called “Battle for Black Reach”.
The regular hard cover 5th Edition rulebook is due out in July, with a retail price of $49.99.
Even with this great value, Games Workshop Inc. has instructed their retailers to warn consumers that in order to off-set this incredible value,GW is forced to break the promise of not raising any prices for 5 full years. As a result, all of the GW starters (40k, Fantasy and Lord of the Rings) will now be sold at $59.99, rather than the former $49.99.
Even so, the values of these starters are astounding, as entire armies can be built for the cost of a couple of starters.
Be sure to place your pre-orders early so that you don’t miss out on this incredible deal!

UPDATE: BoLS has received additional info and have added model counts to the list.

~That is a crazy amount of stuff for $59.99. If so, even with the price increases in other starters, it might be a sign of an updated sales strategy on behalf of GW. I only pick up the hardcover rulebooks for new editions, but at that price, I will be hard-pressed to resist the starter box as well.

It looks to be just normal Nobs instead of the Mega-armored Nobs then?

We know how big a tactical squad and a terminator squad are, but Im wondering how big the ork mobs are

Anonymous said...

what do they mean by starters? is that the main rulebook then?

Anonymous said...

so are these models going to be some new snap together models like BFM, or are they the regular sprues. either way i'm happy!

Ironjens said...

Interesting to see that the orks are getting a small but legal army while the space marines need to top up with another tactical squad to make it legal. Go go greenskins!

John said...

With the Marines just break the full tactical squad into two 5 man teams and you have a ready to go army

Nice deal, may have to buy it

Anonymous said...

Wow, i normally just buy the rule book, but if the set is as money saving in the UK as it's reputed to be, then i'll soon be starting space marines and orks!!

My only hope is the GW don't decided to change all their prices again as it's rather expensive now.

Phillip said...

Sweet- Where do you get this most excellent News? it is always so great and gooshy.

David said...

I'll be thrilled if the Marines are full sprue, but I won't expect it. I'll expect BFM-like kiddie-sprues, which are much harder to pose and convert and thus much harder for me to use. But I still look forward to going in on a box or three just for the marines and kicking off a brand new (for me) army. Probably something super simple to paint, like Howling Griffons.

"As a result, all of the GW starters (40k, Fantasy and Lord of the Rings) will now be sold at $59.99, rather than the former $49.99."

What are starters?

Anonymous said...

what he said other wise it may be more expensive over here in the UK :(

eriochrome said...

I will definately be picking this up. Since only the Commander is listed as full sprue I expect all the rest to be snap fit. That is fine. I am trying to get up to a battlecompany so a few extra bolters will always help when I mix them in with other models.

Insanekaosx said...

wow.... I was thinking about not picking up 5th edition at all, but with an offer like this?

I'll have to wait and see how it all looks...

Anonymous said...

The staerters are the 3 sets that introduce you to the particular game: the battle of skull pass is the fantasy one, the battle for macragg (or however its spelled) is the current 40k one, and i have no idea what the lord of the rings one is, mabye the mines of moria or something *shrug*

Anonymous said...

HOLY SQUIG ON A STICK! This makes Skull Pass look as crappy as Macragge was! (And Skull Pass remains an awesome deal!).

And yes, for the uneducated (and not surprisingly unwashed) masses, the starter boxes are

_ Battle for Skull Pass - Warhammer Fantasy
_ Battle for Macragge - Warhammer 40k
_ The Mines of Moria - Lord of the Rings.

Brother Armand said...

I'll take 2 please!

Anonymous said...

Black Reach? I wonder if that's on Rynn's World.

Firewasp said...

Sounds like a pretty sweet deal, although don't kid yourself that's it's gonna be £30 in the uk more likely $45

Charlie said...

I wonder if it will be a five man terminator squad or a three man one, indicating a change in the SM codex. Has anyone run down the points totals between the two armies yet to get an idea of how balanced they are and to infer through that what SM troop and elite sizes are?

Chris in Mugu said...

Speaking of Battle of McCraige, I wonder if the prices on that will come down any...will have to keep an eye on ebay.

Anonymous said...

Yes, I will be buying two. deffcoptas FTW!

MartyRay said...

I certainly hope this rumour is true, but I've heard differently from the Canadian HQ staff. No Deffkoptas, but Kans instead.

I hope my source is wrong, as i'd love to see Deffkoptas, but my source has seen the whole kit and said no Deffkoptas...

Again hope i'm wrong...

Game Thug said...

Admittedly, this is a lot of content in terms of value. Let's hope the rules are good enough to justify a new edition and that this single "broken promise" doesn't translate into the small end of the wedge.

Anonymous said...

£50 for a box release is standard, the real hook will be whether the figures are snap fix beginner quality or full sprue goodness. If it's the latter...how could you not? I'm hoping it's the latter, in an almost loss leader sense.

Anonymous said...

They'll be very simple assembly models similar to the current style of models that you see in the three core games. This has been a business model of GW for quite sometime. Perhaps the only business model they got right.

Why? Because these sets are aimed at beginners who are just starting the GW Hobby and need to assemble models quickly to get on with their first few games. No new player has a want to spend hours assembling their Space Marines ( before the game can begin (like they had to in 3rd edition set, each marine consisting of 10 parts and a base.)

Under good painting, these models will hold up quality wise with the rest of GW's line.

Anonymous said...

I agree we want normal sprues but a begginer could be pushed away before their first game.

Veritech Pilot said...

If what is listed is actually included this set will be worth all its dollars. Heres hoping that the spures are like the 3rd edition starter in which they are the same as the actual kits sold normally.

Hmm might need to start Orcs now.(Speed Freaks anyone?)

Anonymous said...

Holy Moley!

Anonymous said...

Rynn's world indeed. It seems that the Crimson Fists are to be the trophy chapter for this edition once more. Shame, I like Ultramarines cheesiness as the cover boys, but it has always gone on rotation like that...Can't wait for the UK pricetag to be released.

Anonymous said...

This would have to mean that a plastic warboss kit is on the way right?! They don't include metal miniatures in starter boxes do they?

Anonymous said...

Either that or its just one whole metal model(which doesn't seem likely).

Anonymous said...

is there going to be any terrain? the crash aquilla lander was prey sweet

Zannal said...

Yep, looks like my friend and I are going to get 2 boxes then. He gets the marines I get the orks.

emily0 said...

As much as I like Hatredcopters, the idea of plastic Kans is... awesome. Plastic nobs? Plastic EVERYTHING!

MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

eriochrome said...

Rumor is no terrain. Poor Orks without cover are going to get wasted.

As noted I would be shocked if most of the models are not simple snap together. I bet the commander sprue is in there just to give people a taste of the modeling side of the hobby but will only appear in the very last scenario.

I do hope they have the scenarios of BfM compared to the training exercises of BfSP.

"I certainly hope this rumour is true, but I've heard differently from the Canadian HQ staff. No Deffkoptas, but Kans instead.

Your source is wrong, sadly. They are definitely Koptas.

Anonymous said...

Personally, I really doubt there are going to be Deffkoptas. That's a little far fetched. I'd be psyched if it was true but I'd be more inclined to believe that there are killakans in there.
Still, what an awesome deal! You can be sure that these are going to be snap together models and not the whole multi-pose multi-option sprues. Just have a look at the Battle for Skull Pass set and imagine the same for 40k.
If there were the entire sprues, GW would see a massive drop in sales of those boxed sets. I mean who would buy the space marine commander set for 25 bucks when they could get that and a whole mess of troops for 60 bucks. It just doesn't make good business sense for them to do that.

eriochrome said...

Space Marine Commander is currently 15 but it is great to include that kit as a whole since it really has the most customizable content of anything. Stormbolter, plasma pistol, combi melta and plasma, pw, pf, bolter, bolt pistol, etc. Lets the youngin really feel in control of what there top man looks like.

Unfornately new codex will probably restrict the stormbolters, and combis to commander or vet squads like in BA codex.

Anonymous said...

"Personally, I really doubt there are going to be Deffkoptas."

My source is very high up with GW. Definitely koptas. Same anon as the last quote, preferring to stay anon.

Get out yer Wagner, the koptas are real.

Chaosgerbil said...

Having one or two customizable characters along with a bunch of easy to assemble troops is a great idea for a starter set, since you can start quickly but be introduced to the vast array of modeling possibilities. Putting in some vehicle goodness makes it golden. GW has a strategy here that is both nice to the veterans and great for newbies.

I can't wait!

MartyRay said...

Ok, I did double check, and my source says it is definately not Deff Koptas, the source having seen the box and its contents.

Maybe its all a big conspiracy :)

Hell, maybe one is a Canadian version, hahaha.

MartyRay said...

Whoops, the thing i forgot to mention is the logistics of it all.

It would be damn hard to make a 2-3 piece deffkopta, but a Kan can (heh Kan-can) easily be made in a few pieces.

And lastly, i really would rather see Deffkoptas in the box, but I no longer expect them.

Nick said...

Looking at base numbers:

Ork Warboss - 60 pts
Nobs -5 x 20 =100 pts
DeffKoptas -3x35 =105 pts
Ork Boyz -20x6 = 120 pts

Total: 385 pts

Commander - 60 pts
Terminators - 5X40=200 pts
Dreadnought - 105 pts
Tactical marines - 10x15=150 pts

Total: 515 pts

Now obviously neither side would send out their leaders as bare units, we have about 550-600 pts per side. This would definable give the advantage to the marines since the Orks would almost certainly have to be taking a ton of upgrades.

Obligatory Nob with PK in boyz squad (times 2) is another 70 points. (running total 455)

Warboss I would give big choppa, attack squig, and cybork body (+20pts for running total of 475)

Nobs I would upgade to PK (+125 pts for running total of 600 pts)

(I would see almost no point in upgrading the armor since almost anything the Space marines would throw at them would negate the upgraded armor)

On the Marine Side I would leave the terminators and dreadnought alone, add heavy bolters to the tacs,(+10 pts) and give the Commander combat shield, bolt pistol and power fist (+36 pts)

Running total of 561 pts. Not sure what else I would add. Possibly add one assault canon to Terminators, but that would take away from their assault role.

Comments?

My source is a Canadian too, and confirms the Koptas.

"Ok, I did double check, and my source says it is definately not Deff Koptas, the source having seen the box and its contents.".

Yeah... sorry, but it's not true.

MartyRay said...

Awesome! Like i said, i'm going off someone else. If Deff Koptas are in, and kans are not, I'd be happier.

Anonymous said...

I don't have any proof but my gut says there is no way there are 3 deffkoptas in that box set. no way.

"I don't have any proof but my gut says there is no way there are 3 deffkoptas in that box set. no way."

Don't use your gut in the future. Except maybe to eat.

3 KOPTAS. GET YER WAGNER OUT! RIDE OF THE VALKYRORKS!

It'll be more here in Aus, but everything is. Oh, well - hopefully its only slighlty overpriced, and I can get one and a new rulebook. And a new ork 'dex. About time they got orks in another starter set. Finaly some GW lovin', makes a change.

WAAAGH!

Ryan said...

I don't even mind if they're limited-pose models, just as long as they're better than the Grinning Goffs from the 2nd Edition box. My god were those ugly.

Anonymous said...

"as long as they're better than the Grinning Goffs from the 2nd Edition box. My god were those ugly."

No kidding, I still have a box of, something like, 57 of them! Jeez what to do with them all?

Anonymous said...

Koptas? Kans? Someone will be wrong when it comes out. My thought is it will be kans since they would be easier to fit in the box as snap together models.

Anonymous said...

"Koptas? Kans? Someone will be wrong when it comes out. My thought is it will be kans since they would be easier to fit in the box as snap together models."

And despite all that thinking, and mighty good logic it is, you will be wrong.

Once again, KOPTAS.

MartyRay said...

Ok we get it bud, you seem sure of yourself, you don't have to quote and correct everyone who disagrees with you.

And i still have a hard time believing, as much as i want to believe, that Koptas are in the box. There is no way they can be made into a snap together model IMO.

Kans or Koptas, both will be good for us Ork players.

Anonymous said...

oh ok sorry didn't mean to look like an arse really tone is hard to get over teh web

Koptas teh roxxor111!!!!1!1!

Win!!!!

MartyRay said...

Yeah the internet has that effect.

And having talked directly to some people now, i will concede defeat to you in this, deff koptas ar ein the box, 3 of the bloody things!!!

Defeat? Heck, I think we all win here! WINN!

MartyRay said...

Aye, a nice win for the green tide...marines too actually...

dm2ortiz said...

I think you're mixing up the starter game box set with the new megaforce box set. Not to mention historically the miniatures they come with the starter set are usually pretty lame.

Digitarii said...

If this is anywhere near accurate, and the DA codex is any indication, the space marines included would give you 1 HQ unit, 1 Troops unit, and 2 Elites. Unless the dread is going to be relegated to a heavy support role.

i have an update to add!!!!!!!

two gw employees made there rounds and held a slideshow at one of games workshops la battle bunker stores. we got to have SOME of our questions answered. one of the questions i asked was. are the sprues that are in the new starter set minis the same as the boxes you can get on the shelves. and he said no. the new set will have kinda like macrage minis and that some of the plastics that will be in the set will also get a new versions in plastic also for the shelves too. so i take it like deftkoptas ill get a plastic for the box and the shelves also. i asked this cause i noticed thats a trend that skull pass and macrage had. different minis in them then what you buy on the shelves. he aslo added that there will be a special gamers set that comes in a ammo case. that comes with a laser pointer for line of sight that has crosshairs. new green templates and also include new counters for like run and charge and damage on tanks. and that at first the new boxed set might not have a small copy of the rules but later it will. unrelated he talked about how hordes of chaos will get a new codex in copies of white dwarf like they did with blood angels. and that its right around june or july. or august. also dark elves are geting a new codex about the same time with 2 new plastics. one being new raptors cant remember other one. the bits are getting updates from time to time on the websites, he also mentioned soon after the games day thats coming up to look out for lots of sneek peaks on gws sites. one last thing is that the new how to paint book will also talk about using the new washes and also mention using the basing gun as they call it to base the models first. he said the gun is a can propelled single action gun cheaper then the other can guns out there
enjoy all the info///////=)

BrassScorpion said...

Some clarifications:
The "laser pointer" that shines a cross-hairs light for checking LOS is NOT in the 40K Gamer's Edition. The Gamer's Edition ($90 US), which is available for pre-order as of last Friday, contains the new rule book, two sprues of counters, and new green blast templates. All this comes with the "ammo crate" that also has a foam model tray in it. The laser pointer LOS light will be available separately in July and will cost $10.

The hand flamer shaped air brush/spray gun costs $35 US and uses propellant cans just like some of the other inexpensive air brushes available in craft stores.

BrassScorpion said...

Update on the 5th Edition Starter Set:
1) The price may still be under consideration and may not be $60. It could be anywhere from $60 to $75.
2) The rumor that it does not contain a full copy of the rules, while just a rumor, is not a wild rumor. I've now heard this directly from at least one credible source.

I remember when the 40K boxed game cost $75 before Macragge and it was always a hard sell to new gamers at that price, especially non-gamer parents thinking of buying it for their children. And that was with a "real" full rule book. I hope the possible price increase and elimination of a full rule book is not a huge marketing error. I know a lot of veteran gamers were interested in the Starter Set mainly because they wanted a small, paperback rule book like the one in the Macragge set. A lot of potential new customers may also be reticent to buy the set if it does not have a full rule book in it.

Contrary to some of the other whining posts you'll see on forums, I want GW to make lots of money and stay in business a long time, I'm a huge fan. Raising the price to make more money is fine if the set will sell well, but not if it causes sales of the sets to plummet. The possible combination of changes in price and lack of a rule book for the starter set do not sound like a winning combo that will sell a lot of sets. I've seen many marketing strategy changes since Rogue Trader days and some were more successful than others. The Macragge and Battle for Skull Pass hobbyist recruitment strategy both from a price and contents standpoint has always appeared to be a winner from what I've observed. I hope that abandoning that strategy, if they do abandon it, will not be a disaster.

BrassScorpion said...

There are lots of fun rumors out there now regarding new Space Marine items to be released around the time of the new 40K Starter Set and the new Space Marine Codex. Specifically:

The newly boxed Land Raider that will come with a sprue of Crusader upgrades. At last, those nasty, fiddly metal bits will be gone. Additionally, this sprue is supposed to contain parts for other versions of the Land Raider. Rumors of a "Redeemer" version with Inferno Cannon sponsons are everywhere.

There are also whispers from the Warp of a Thunderfire for Space Marines and a possible return of the Tarantula. Is the Thunderfire a new model based on the old Squat(!) artillery piece? Are the two rumors connected and the Thunderfire is a modernized version of the old Tarantula?

Cub said...

If it's true then GW really are taking the perverbial, i'm sorry but come on, space marine armies are getting a fully legal army including a dreadnought and terminators for just over the price chaos would pay for their (STILL) metal dreadnought?? there's some serious dodginess going on up at hq methinks.

Anonymous said...

There will be three koptas but no Nobs.

Anonymous said...

if youve read this far your sadder than me so HA

Anonymous said...

the boxed set sefinitly does contain the above mentioned contents AS WELL AS a plastic kila kan.

also the rlebook will contain all the rules that you need to play a game with the starter set. but nomore than that.

also be on the look out for newplastic chaos dreadnaughts.

Anonymous said...

it looks like all the models are snap fit seeing as the last wh40k boxset tht was released all of the models in it were snap fit bit of a bummer i thought :/
