CHALLENGE: Design a Macharian Crusade IG Regiment

OK, guys lets take a break from all the rumors for a bit of BoLS community building. This challenge goes out to all the intrepid modelers and 40k fluff nuts out there. Today I introduce the: Macharian Crusade IG Regiment Challenge!

Your goal is to submit to the BoLS email box (upper right column) the following:
  • A high quality pic of a single converted and painted IG trooper against a white background
  • One paragraph of background fluff regarding your regiment (including whether they fought on the Imperial side or struggled valiantly against the forces of the Lord Solar).
  • A list of Doctrines (up to 6, and be fluffy not cheaty!!!) and preferred heavy/special weapons.
  • A very brief rundown of the bitz used to convert your trooper.

After a week or so, we will post the top finalists BoLS receives and put up a poll for you, our dedicated readers to judge. The top 3 finalists will get added into the Macharian Crusade book for all to see and try to match world over (along with a special thanks credit for the 3 proud creators).

Here is an example to get your creative juices going...

Chiros Red Guard
Once one of the most decorated regiments of the Segmentum Solar, the famed "Red Guard" were the personal army of General Richeleau of Larka. One of the most pious and determined of forces, they choose the wrong side in one of the Ministorum' s many Wars of Faith. Hounded out of the Imperium they fled into the wilderness space of the Segmentum Pacificus. They were discovered on the rebel world of Chiros by the Macharian Crusade's 2nd Army under General Sejanus. Beaten, but never broken, the Chiros Red Guard fought to the end, extracting a high price in blood in exchange for their lives.

Doctrines
Hardened Fighters
Iron Discipline
Drop Troops (representing hidden ambushers)
Veterans
Priests

Preferred Heavy: Autocannon
Preferred Special: Flamer

Construction
Cadian, Empire Pistollier, and Space Marine Scout bitz

~Ladies and Gentlemen, start your engines! Its only one IG trooper to convert up and paint and a tiny bit of fluff. Lets see your best stuff folks. As usual, comments are welcome, so let us know if you're in, what you're working on, and how its coming. If you want more context for the Macharian fluff, feel free to use this Crusade Map to help you out. Happy modeling and good luck to you all!

Is there a deadline, because I can't do anything untill the start of July.

Anonymous said...

Never mind, read it again and saw the week rule.

Oh well.

bigred said...

I'll leave the competition open till I receive enough entries to set up a good poll for judging.

I've found however that without a stated deadline, folks will put things off indefinitely.

Can we do team entries? My friend is an awesome converter I have paint skills. Could we enter as long as we spell out who did what?

Anonymous said...

I like the Red Guard trooper, nice job.

Tim Weston said...

When you write "trooper' as the model may it be a kasrkin sergeant converted or other memeber of the regiment?

bigred said...

@Psyberwolfe, teams entries are great, just let me know the names of all involved.

@Tim, No problem, the main thing we're looking for are cool conversions that aren't beyond most folk's skill level.

hey Bigred

would you guys be willing to do a rundown of which reg's are already being included? It would be dull to do one and then find out that your fresh patch o' ground has already been trod.

Obviously, all the famous regiments are played (cadian, tanith, etc) and we know from posts that you guys have already covered Skulltakers, Penal Legion and RT Beastmen. But a complete list for reference would be awesome.

bigred said...

We have covered every regiment that is in the current IG book, and most of the old metal ranges.

The goal we are looking for is cool conversions of regiments that are completely player designed, so put on the thinking cap and have fun guys.

The Imperial Guard is VAST, so lets see something new.

Hmmmm - have to see about digging out the tiny remenants of my IG and see what can be done

Just started perusing the BoLS, and I love it. I'll get something entered in the next day or two. I just need to get a better pic than what I have available right now. And some fluff too. My current fluff won't work for this but I'll come up with something suitable.

How creative should these models be? I assume using a Cadian with a different paint scheam doesn't cut it.

Anonymous said...

Sadly the only Guard I play are Tau Auxiliaries, so this is the wrong theater for me.

some people seriously miss the point.

How many entries can we enter in a single email? I've got 2 or 3 ideas floating around (picked up a box of cadians to use) and I'd like to try any and all of them.

@ anon

/agree
its only one trooper, matters awfully little whether you have/want an army of them or not, just be creative (once it's in the BoLS book someone else will build the army for you).

@ Bigred
Any chance you can (un)officially push the deadline into next week? It looks like I won't even see the bits i ordered for my mach-crus regiment til thursday or friday =(

@ Everybody Else
If anybody has a great mini but needs name/fluff, hit me up. I write a lot better than I paint. Nosuchmethod att embarqmail.com

Oh one more thing

@The Tau Auxiliary Guy

Gue'Vesa (with allied tau) are probably hands-down the best way to represent the enemies in the campaign's Hallmark Battle at Adrantis 5.

To quote lexicanum:
"Adrantis Five was a human, hyper-technical planet which had been separated from the Imperium for over five thousand years. [...] they had 'turned to the dark certainties of science, and created many new and wondrous machines'."

Anonymous said...

Gah!

Was hoping Adrantis V went unoticed (until I finshed my entry, of course). ;)

And, yes... Tau aux make a good base for Adranti troopers. Personally, I have done as much as possible to remove the Tau-esque-ness from mine. Just personal preference.

-CuRoi

p.s. The one paragraph fluff part is abosultely killing me. Too many wizz-bang ideas, not enough space.

Pants said...

Oh I totally feel the pain on that. I think I'm going to be making a plethora of miniatures and then picking one out to paint.

Titus Crow said...

Woohoo! Submitted!

bigred said...

You guys can feel free to submit multiple entries. For the ease of editing and management, I would ask that you send each entry as a separate email with all the pics and fluff included so I can easily keep each entry seperate.

As for the deadline, I will keep it open until I receive enough entries to have a good selection for you all to choose from. So no worries, but try to get going as best you can.

nosuchmethod said...

I'll try to get my boy painted up & submitted this weekend, hopefully submissions aren't closed by then.

On Adrantis V:
Its included/featured in the most of the Lord Solar fluff and marked on the campaign map, so there's a good chance that BoLS is already covering them. I was just pointing out that they are a good line-in for someone who plays tau, or especially tau with human auxiliaries. Bigred may confirm/deny.

I notice black templars on the map. Are there any special BT rules in the crusade book? I'm currently building a BT army...

Anonymous said...

Where can I find more info about this Solar fellow? I'd like work within the storyline of the campaign.

bigred said...

We already have Adrantis V covered, but there is always room for another "offshoot hi-tech culture" of Adrantis that would work for a submission.

@brandon
Yes Black Templars are in and will be getting 2 named characters; one of which opens up a new modelling opportunity Templar players have been wanting for a long time... (evil grin)

"We already have Adrantis V covered..."

Must.Not.Weep.

Bummer. Looks like my boy gets another Tau Aux to play with.

Back to the drawing (and modding) board.

Very interesting stuff guys, count me in for an entry or 2 by the end of the weekend (maybe sooner). I doubt I'll make the cut, but it's a great diversion from writing a dissertation paper. Though I'd better read up on my macharius crusade knowledge tonight.

I'll see if I can't get a few more members from Astronomican to send in some stuff as well!

Jeff said...

Oh cool, there's still time. I have a guy nearly complete, done tomorrow (waiting on ink to dry, a dullcote and some touchups).

Great idea guys!

Hephesto said...

Well I figured I might as well put up a quick preview of 2 of the guys I'm working on. There's just 1 small problem, my dissertation deadline just got move up a week. So I am unsure I can finish everything by the end of the weekend, so I hope midway through the week will be in time. Especially since I'm working on a final third guy as well.

In addition I've found another 2, maybe even 3 people, who're trying to get something together in time as well.

And finally, the link:

I just wanted to thank you guys for doing this challenge thingy. Not only is a great diversion (and a chance to get something into an amazing project), it has also led to e figuring out how to convert something I've wanted to do for ages. So thanks and you can expect my entries prior to thursday!

Psyren said...

Just sent my entry. Doubt it will win, but I had good fun converting and painting it and thinking of the background.

Dae said...

Thanks for the opportunity to paint a guardsman... Hadn't painted anything for ages! A good occasion to remind me how bad a painter I am.

I'm entering, because being average isn't satisfying unless you shove it into the face of the world XD

And also because Hephesto asked.

Ziggy said...

I'll start work as soon as I get some inspiration :/

Toffer said...

Big Red

Would it be possible to post the pics of all the entries no matter if they win or not. I am in the process of developing a last chancers army and need heaps of conversion ideas. I am happy for the 2 I sent in to be posted and I think everyone would love too see the results of our various labours.

Hephesto

Sweet figs dude. Nice one!
