Hi guys,
A few little morsels for the day...
White Dwarf 5th Edition Mini
Ramping up for the release of 5th Edition, GW is giving everyone a little treat in an upcoming White Dwarf. Here are the details:
There is a free Terminator and Ork to be mailed with US WD #344. These are models from the new 40K boxed starter set. The Terminator is 4 major parts plus a base: torso front including head, full lower body with torso rear half, left arm and right arm, plus one small fifth bit in the form of a decorative skull. The Ork is 3 parts plus base: body, head and one separate pistol wielding arm if my memory serves me correctly.
The amount of detail on these models is terrific. They appear to have all the same types of detail seen on their multi-part model equivalents. Per page 39 in WD #342, newstand copies of WD will come with one model or the other while subscribers will get both models.
Laser Pointer
There are conflicting reports that the LOS pointer is an LED, not an actual laser as predicted by many, so there should be little in the way of safety concerns with it (the jury is still out on this one).
Terrain Kits
We are hearing that the small tower-like bunker and the terrific landing pad shown in photos in the new rule book are model kits under consideration for release in the near future. So look for them the next time you flip throughthe book.
~Well, no laser eye trauma is always something to be thankful for(if it pans out...). I admit to being somewhat worried about the ensuing laser shenanigans when I first heard about it, but it looks like we all dodged a bullet on this one.

Huh, wonder if us north of the Border will get to see these free models?
Likely not, but good to know they giving something away free again, seems so long since models came in White Dwarf.
This is pretty cool since I just signed up for WD about a month ago. With all the talk about the models that are going to be in the new Box set I wonder what the terrain is going to be, same crashed ship?
So us EU players won't be getting the models? Weren't GW UK based once? And isn't England in Europe? Or could it be that the UK has finally become the 51st state it has so long been acting as? Why, yes. I AM a bit miffed, thanks for asking =/
Hmmm, well seeing as for years and years the only ones to get WD, and then when the rest of the world got WD, UK/Europe still got the free stuff in WD, while we all got screwed.
I think UK WD will have these models in it liek the American version, but really is it that big of a deal?
How about Aussie players? Is there any news on us getting these free models. . .
Niels toft:
You will get yours in UK345. Look at the July issue, it says so in there.
"small tower-like bunker" ???
"terrific landing pad" ???
What photos are those in then?
I've trawled back through posts, but can't seem to find them :(
btw, read over July WD (UK) an gave me the impression that both models will be supplied, don't have the exact wording with me, but thats the impression I came away with.
What landing pad is that?
An LED? Huh...I have a difficult time imagining how that will work. In my (admittedly limited) experience with them, it doesen't seem like they would crank out focused light at anything like the range needed to be effective.
I'm totally happy to be wrong on this, BTW, so if someone can explain how it will work out just fine, i'd love to hear it...
Relax :)
LEDs can be focused in quite a tight beam ("they" make really good torches using LED light now, though poor quality ones last a notoriously short time), Im sure it'll be cool.
Hey can someone point me at a pic of these new bunkers and landing pads, Ive heard this rumour before and I'm really keen to see them.
Cheers fellas, Im only new to BoLS, discovering you in the last couple of days but I'm impressed.

I'm quoting from the GW US webpage for Avanced Orders.
Warhammer 40,000 L.O.S. Markerlight
The Citadel Markerlight is modeled on a Space Marine scope and projects a crosshair onto your target. Perfect for checking those vital lines of sight.
This pack contains one class-two laser product.
Availability: This item is available for pre-order now and will be released on the 12th of July. Part Code: 99220199040
The SECOND paragraph is plain cristal clear. IT'S A LASER.
Predicted by many??? It's GW itself who predited this (and still are doing)
Class 2 Laser eh? stronger than an IG Standard issue lasgun then...
Cool.... now what about the landing pad and bunker!?!
You're both right about the marker pointer. It's an LED laser, like you see in laser pointers. "Actual" lasers require high voltage power supplies to energize glass (read: fragile) laser tubes. Either way, it's a Class II laser product, and can potentially cause eye damage. I imagine the potential is small, given the low power of the device, and the fact the light is dispersed into a crosshair pattern instead of a single point. We survived the epidemic of kids getting cheap laser pointer keychains, we'll survive this one too.
I guess I'm the only one that is only partially pleased with *more* Marines models, but sanction-psyked about the new terrain and even more so about the new Shaper! Yay Kroot!
FYI a laser that small could never do any eye damage.
The models sound great, the laser sounds scary. But, as was said, we survived the keychain laser epidemic. I hate to miss out on a mini, but I'm just not sure I'm ready to subscribe to WD yet...
Maybe someone can help me out with some info here.
The minis to be shipped with the WD issue will be (or at least be similar to) the miniatures in the new boxed set for 5ed. I have been looking around the GW site, and havent been able to find the boxed set including minis at all. I have seen the rulebook, special edition rulebook, and the gamer's edition rulebook, but no "get lots of cheap minis" edition rulebook.
Now it's entirely possible I am looking at it and not seeing it, but I dont even see any hint of such a boxed set on the site.
Anyone have any insight on this for me?
So plan A (give the kids lasers) didn't work out. I wonder why GW didn't go with plan B (the rangefinder shoots out a needle which lodges in the target). Cowards!

@ xbruthamanx:
They're talking about The Battle for Black Reach the 5th Edition starter box set. It's not, to my knowledge, up for preorder yet; poke around older posts here for more info about it.
I would be good to see something good on/in white dwarf. I put the last issue back on the shelf, after picking it up, realising how thin it was and how full of LOTR it was. I thought, am I going to pay £4.00 for something I only get a couple of pages from? No.
Ouch - looks like Australia wont be getting the Markerlight at all now.
Ducki3x - it is possible to use an LED to put out enough light to pass for a laser, lots of toys use them
More on the terrain kits?
I believe the mentioned terrain kits are in the back of US WD341
Again with the laser topic..
From the Laser Safety RefSheet
Class II lasers are low power (< 1mW), visible light lasers that could possibly cause damage to a person's eyes. Some examples of Class II laser use are: classroom demonstrations, laser pointers, aiming devices and range finding equipment. If class II laser beams are directly viewed for long periods of time (i.e. > 15 minutes) damage to the eyes could result.
So actually they DO damage, but no more than classroom pointers, but this (usually) are used by teachers and no by children.
mmmmm....seems to me ain't no an uber-ultrapowered-led else a regular (cheap) laser. I used a laser keychain for LOS (I get tired with the painfull-if-loose-rubber-band method), but this gear is a mounted piece and you have to wear it as glasses or headphone set.
I just wish I could get my hands on a class four laser... but they don't seem to have those at staples :)
you would prolly blind yourself with a class 4...
even looking at the dot (which shortly after transforms into a hole :D) at/in the wall causes severe eye damage within less than a second. so keep away from industrial sized toy... erm alsers :D
Yeah, know what you mean. Us Battletech players are notorious for having to wear sunglasses! :*)
Personaly Ithink that I will pick up a BFM before they go bye-bye, just for the terrain and minis.
P.S.- if you are dying for some paint scemes check out: www.camospecs.com
my god...something in a white dwarf, and not just a card building...a...a...TERMINATOR?!?!?! amazing.....its only been like, what, 8-9 years since something like this...=P
as Borat would say "I am excite!!"

one of the sources showing the markerlight had the "limited release" notice next to it. It's also being boxed in the Citadel Tool line, so there shouldn't be any under 16's buying them, unless their parents buy it for them.
The solution: get them before the kiddies do!
Also, as some of you have noticed, it will cause eye damage if viewed for a few minutes, but the blink reflex will shut your eye in under a second.
as Paul said, we'll survive this too. Especially if those markerlights start getting confiscated.
I don't think Ill buy a laser markerlight... I think Ill just wait for some of the kids to get theirs confiscated and then use theirs for free.
I SHALL HAVE AND ENDLESS SUPPLY OF LASERS, AND THEN I WILL BE EMPEROR!!! (evil laugh)
@ dwayne dibbly, Classic with the class 2 laser being stronger than a lasgun... couldn't stop laughing. You said it but we all thought it.

I'm just as worried about 16+ at my local GW getting their hands on laser pointer instore as I am worried about kids getting them... immaturity and dangerous laser-based behaviour have no age limit!
how many "acts of terrorism" will ensue becuase of lase pointers in the form of a scope = TERRORIST OMG WTFBBQ GET HIM HE'S TERRORIST 9/11 OSAMA OH NOES!
-sam
I'm not going to bother researching it, but have there been any recorded incidences of eye damage caused by careless laser pointer usage?
People are so paranoid about these little things, instead of worrying about where exactly kids today are getting the money from to buy models.
i've had a laser pointer from almost day one with this hobby, and have seen all kinds of mirrors and things with 2nd edition and what not....this is silly...talking about class 2 thins, and eye damage that...lets get back onto plastic and pewter miniatures...thanks....webmd.com forums might be interested in this crazy rant though! hahaha, seriously....i don't think it will be a problem...i think you're all missing the point...a white dwarf is giving away a damn TERMINATOR....that's more of a discussion point ==> better business and marketing...yes. kudos to GW...hype that ish.

looks like Dreadnoughts will be a dime-a-dozon on Ebay
i lik lazres a lot i hoep that its strogh enuf to lite my brohtrts space marnies on fire if i use a magifyer maybe
Why is everyone so keyed up abuot the laser?? Spend what? $20 for the GW laser? Or... go down to the local Dollar Store and buy 1 for a buck! Hmm....lemme think for a sec...anyone got a buck they could spare?
Yeah, Spend that $20 reserved for the GW laser on yourself and 19 more lasers at the aforementioned dollar store.
Then, give rest them away to your 19 closest friends!
Oh. wait...
The LOS Marker Pointer is $10 US, not $20.
The landing pad and the small tower-like bunker under consideration for release as kits are pictured in the 5th edition 40K rule book. The landing pad is also pictured in US WD #342.
SOLD OUT
The 40K Gamer's Edition is currently sold out in the US. Another run has apparently been requested. If you missed out on this limited product, you may want to pay close attention to the GW website to see if more are added for order in the near future.
Anyone stupid enough to get blinded by a laser pointer doesn't deserve to have _eyes_ let alone the bloody pointer.
If anything it will sort the wheat from the chaff, bring it on, up the power and have it shoot darts tipped with cyanide.
Now thats a goddam laser pointer.

@ Dwayne Dibbly
Great Red Dwarf reference. I love that show and "The Cat" in all forms. Danny John-Jules is terrific.

"looks like Dreadnoughts will be a dime-a-dozon on Ebay"
Why? If anything, Dreads will be better in the new edition, can walk and shoot all weapons, the new damage chart ensures they will not be destroyed on a glancing hit, can run...
I say let them sell cheap, more win for the rest of us
shenanigans the word should be used more often.
[Huh, wonder if us north of the Border will get to see these free models?]
According to the Canadian WD - we subscribers will get a pair of figures as well.
David
I am hoping that in the 5thE SM Codex, all Scouts will get the S4 shotguns.
Yay David you made my day, free models for all!
Now to bug friends to poy up free terminators, lol...
At the risk of harping on about these new terrain kits; the back of this month's Australian White Dwarf had a pic of some SM (Black Templars from memory) on a bunker and ramp which appeared to be made of C.O.D. building tiles embedded in a rocky piece of terrain.
Is this the same pic you refer to in the US edition? If so anyone know if the rocky bits are going to be included in the box set too?
Is so, I believe I may very well pop my proverbial cookies!
It must be 6 months since GW released something new I was interested in for 40K and now it looks like Im going to have to start working the streets just to pay for all this wonderful new stuff coming our way.
xbruthamanx - the black reach box isnt on sale (in the UK at least) till september, hence the lack of pre order options for it.
we are releasing the book first, then the box at the end of the summer.
Also to answer "tim from wa", there isnt any scenery in the core box as far as im aware. Its all models with (possibly) a small bit of scenery a la Skull Pass.
That is my info atm, i am however a UK Staffer and should that change i will let you guys know
