NEWS: Assault on Black Reach Box and Pics

Images brought to the community by Warseer's Wrath, Kaldanesh, and Hatemonger

Well look right here:

Ladies and Gentlemen, we have a box.

We also have a nice set of additional pics of the sprues, including nice closeups of the Marine Captain, Ork Warboss, and the ork boyz.

~I'm really impressed with that Plastic Captain, and Dreadnought. that is just great work for press assembly plastics. The pics on the back of the box would also seem to settle once and for all, the mini contents of the box.

The marine captain is amazing.

Splitting his torso into two parts vertically allows incredible details on both parts. The cape, the loincloth/tabbard, the surface of his bolter, etc. The metal figures they had in the past usually had much more detail on them then the plastic models they make now (due to the flexible molds that peel off out of recesses). This is the first plastic model I've seen in years that even comes close to the amount of detail the old metal figures had.

This is also the first "starter" set I've ever seen that actually ends up being almost indistinguishable from the models that you'd add to it to expand your army later on. The old starter sets had those guys with the boring static pose. When you added more figures later on (the multi-part kits, blisterpacks, etc), the starter chunk of your army always stood out like a sore thumb.

That's an amazing chunk of miniatures. Really amazing.

I held the sprue pictured above while I was at Baltimore Games Day and again when Jervis J. brought it by our Battle Bunker the following Monday. I had a good chance to scrutinize it quite carefully and I can honestly say that it is simply amazing, both in the cleverness with which GW got some dynamic posing and depth on models so simple to construct and in the sheer amount of detail on each part of each model. I am really looking forward to adding quite a few of these models to my next Space Marine army, right next to the great new metal miniatures being released for the range.

I am totally gonna complain that there is a lack of kickass terrain
Still gonna get it cause its awesome

If you look around at the torrents, you can find a preview copy of what I can only assume is the rulebook they're going to have in Black Reach. I heard that they weren't going to put a full ruleset in the set, but either that's incorrect or this is what they were originally going to do. It's even got box art on the back of it...

BrassScorpion said...

There was at one time apparently some consideration by GW that they would not include a rule book or a full rule book, however, it has been known for several weeks that GW has decided that there WILL be a FULL mini-sized rule book included in the Assault On Black Reach starter set. I've posted this information several times myself here on BOLS and so have some others as well. Unfortunately, the idea that a full rule book will not be included is still being erroneously passed around and therefore refuses to die. Please, if you see this incorrect information again, squash it like a bug.

I've also heard an update regarding price stating that the starter set will be $60. Given the number and quality of the miniatures in the box, coupled with the handy nature of the mini-sized rule book, that's quite good news.

So nothing for my Tau Grot Auxillary army or my Squat Transvetite Cultists Of Slaanesh then... :~(

Maaaaan those caviar & champaigne guzzling billionaires at GW just cant stop scrweing me around.

in all seriousness though,
I'm already losing sleep counting the sleeps until the 5th Ed book, this box set may very well push me over the edge, awesome stuff!

Anonymous said...

Anyone else think the selection is unbalanced? Do those Nobs have power klaws? It is hard to make out. If so it might be OK.

Dwayne Dibbly said...

I'm pretty sure I read that GW have stated they didn't intend the minis supplied to be balanced forces. Just some cool shit to get you started or bulk out what you've got...

MartyRay said...

I think they are quite balanced...20 Boyz and 5 Nobz+Boss w/klaw could take on 10 marines/5 termies + captain i would think.

And the Deffkoptas will annihilate the dreadnought quite likely and be able to support the infantry. Remember all the nobs get 4 attacks (6 on charge) so they could easily charge a terminator sqaud and kil 3-4 before they get to strike, add in the boss, and its all over...

hludwig said...

I just would like to say that I have never seen a reason to buy a 40K starter box before. But now with all these cool minis and a mini-book of rules I'm just going to have to find space in my budget to get a box or two. That and all the other changes that GW is going through there realy has never been a better time the be in this great hobby of ours. To answer your qustion no I don't or ever have worked for GW, I realy feel this way ;p

I agree with you and bigred: the details on those models is amazing, no simply stunning! Especially for a starter set.

But I don't completely agree on the older starter sets. Of course the one back from 2nd had "terrible" Minis, they all looked like stone statues, especially the Marines. But the 4th one (BfM) isn't bad at all imho. The Nids are nearly indistinguishable from the multi-part ones, and the Marines are also looking quite well. Apply a decent paint job and they blend into your existing army without a problem.

BUT there is one little complaint about 4th Starter-Marines that has NOT been resolved in 5th:
The tactical Marines do have quite "dynamic" poses, but it is basically the same on all of them (except the rocket launcher and Sergeant of course). I do understand, that the position of the Bolter/Flamer is the easiest one to achieve, but why isn't there more variation on the legs and heads? Just give 2 of them "walking" legs and turn the heads of another 2 in the direction their weapon is pointing. This should be quite a "cheap" and simple change and would make that tactical squad even better!

Wombats said...

That quality is beautiful.

I was pretty taken aback with GW continuing to charge pewter prices for plastic models...especially through the Tau and Necron releases (blech!)...

But that quality is worth paying for.

Here I am with a Marine Scout army filled out with 60 scouts for troop choices and I seriously considered going halfsies with an Ork playing mate for that box.

Great to see.

Lagduf said...

Any news of a firm release date for this?

I wish this bad boy was coming out in July...but if the Sept Rumors are true then I suppose that is OK.

That Warboss looks cooler than the metal boss I have w/ Big Choppa.

Wrath said...

Yeah I have been trying not to get excited but almost everything 5th has really impressed me. If they follow through with the FAQ's I will be a very happy Tau camper.

I personally think the tac squad markings molded onto the marines is a nice touch. I know some will not like it, but I think it's a nice detail.

Too bad the box shot isn't big enough to see if there is a contents list... like what rules might be included? Or has this been settled yet?

The walking legs I can agree with, but a side turned head, due to the way molding works, would look like poo.

awesome.

I'm getting it.

I also like how the way they split the captain allows you to alter him and make him a bit more dynamic.

With all the talk about bringing back the spirit of old school 40k, it would have been nice if they had gone with a Rynn's World theme.

This makes me happy. :-)

Wow. Has anybody else noticed how the artwork on the box is very similar to the 'old' artwork GW used to do? A bit rougher than the more recent stuff, but still more refined than what they used to do. Kind of gives it a bit of a retro feel. In any case, it looks very impressive.

Also, the contents of the box are all totally awesome, especially the characters are very nice.

As far as the "ain't no terrain in there" is concerned...

Am I the only one thinking the large white space on the bottom right of the back of the box is quite suspicious?

Anonymous said...

That is where the picture of the Rulebook, AoBR Booklet, dice, and ruler sticks are supposed to be.

Dwayne Dibbly said...

An unidentified source close to the publisher tells me the white space is where the disclaimer "Miniatures and Vehicles not included." is going to go.

I'm predicting a spate of violent crimes of passion in the wake of this release.

to wombats:

yeah, it's a bit shocking even to me to see the price of what used to be metal figures being charged for plastics...

but... metal figures require a whole different molding technology... those flexible molds degrade ever time they cast a figure, and have to be redone periodically. Lots of hand labor, higher costs, and health issues too. And after a while, even the master molds (used to make the flexible molds), would begin to deteriorate.

the plastic molding process has a higher setup cost, much it's cheaper in the long run, more consistent quality, etc.

The biggest limitation is that everything has to pull straight out of the mold... no recesses, voids, etc... but these new mini's are amazing.

they're some of the cleverest mold work I've ever seen.

I have no problem paying that much, as long as they have as much detail and dynamic posing as the old metal mini's had... not one bit

Our league has been playing the 5th edition rules for a bit now. Regarding terrain: Forrest/woods terrain are not going to be viable. You can shoot right through the trees and still kill models on the other side. If you make the mass of trees thick enough to block LoS, then it's too thick to get models into. May as well just put up a wall.
As for vertical movement, no more 6 forward and 6 up. Its a strait 6"...with each level basically being equal to 3". This means on a roll of a 4 or less you typically can't enter the terrain AND move up a level.
It really looks like the new movement rules were specifically laid out for the new City Fight terrain. And looking at the expense of those models, it would be a bit much to include one of those (although I think a single sprue to make something would be nice) in this package.
Also some interesting side effects. As long as 1 model in a unit is in LoS, you MUST take all the wounds you fail saves on. This means if you have a Congo-line behind a wall, and 1 lone guy is sticking out on the end, the entire squad can be lost in a single shooting phase. Now what really sucks is that if the survivors stay behind the wall, out of LoS...they can not shoot back next turn.
No consolidation into other units. If your assault squad wins the fight and can not get back into cover..they will die horribly in the next shooting phase.
Kill points favour large squads. In 4th Ed my Razorback based Army had no problems taking out a buddys Eldar Army every time we played. Using 5th Ed kill points he waxed me 7 points to 1!!!!
Scoring down to the last model and no "last man standing" checks. Yes, to keep your enemy from contesting an objective (or to claim the kill point) you are going to have to kill all 30 Orcs.
Movement is now King. Plan ahead. It was so nice of my enemy to move his warriors out of the bulding and in between his heavy weapons and my guys. Instant cover saves from the only weapons he had that could hurt me.
Sorry, started with a comment on why you see no terrain in the box (and why any non-city terrain will now suck) into a mini tactica.
Suffice to say; it has become a brand new game. I forsee much retooling of armies over the summer to accomodate the new rules.

Fritz said...

Nice, even this Eldar player will be picking one up.

Finnaly, an ork warboss with the klaw option!

For my ork warboss i had to take a nob's power klaw and model it onto his hand.

Can't wait till 5th edition!

Jungle still gives a cover save from anythign fired through it or at a target in it, and is difficult, so it is totally viable but just changed.

I make my woods out of a masonite board that is fully flocked, often with some flattened moss or fake vegetation on the edges.
Then, using poke chips for bases, I glue down a couple small rocks and plenty of plastic aquariam plants and moss to make movable tree stands. Just count the whole base as the woods and move the big trees around when needed.

Dwayne Dibbly said...

Thanks for the info Chaosgerbil all this nashing of teeth about the redundancy of forests terrain was beginning to bother me, glad its been exagerated....

Looks absolutely awesome, can't wait.

I love the fact that this box contains a Dread, which I was going to buy next anyway, only 10 or so bucks more and I get all that, sweet!

Anyway, I still think this box, if it includes Orks and Marines should be a "Disaster of Rynns World" box with Crimson Fists, would be pretty cool!

Why is it always Ultramarines? Why could it not be Blood Angels or Imperial Fists.

Someone asked about a release date and the answer is Sept 6th. They have it up in the GW stores on the upcoming releases board

>> "Why is it always Ultramarines? Why could it not be Blood Angels or Imperial Fists."

Why do people continue to ask this question when the answer is obvious to anyone who has been in 40K long enough to know that "it's always Ultramarines". Ultramarines are the iconic Codex Chapter used to sell the basic game and standard Space Marine armies using the Space Marine Codex. Marketing elements, including recognition factor, are important. Space Marines are the most popular army and Ultramarines are the standard example of one used by GW in its marketing for years now. I don't see a problem with it "always being Ultramarines" and it doesn't stop anyone from doing other armies. The constant complaints about it from some gamers, however, are just as ubiquitous and far more tedious than the Ultramarines.

okay fair enough, but while we're on the subject why does it always have to be space marines? imperial gaurd versus someone would make a nice change. theres more than one imperial faction GW!

all in all though this looks to be an amazing box set. i can get another 1500 pts for my ork army from this! definately a must.

Anonymous said...

>>why does it always have to be space marines?

Interesting question, considering you accepted the answer to "why always smurfs?" so nonchalant^^. I´d say it is about the same answer, safe you swap "chapter" with "race" and "ultras" with "space merry-man".

Lastly, how do you get 1500 points of orks from this box?
I added the contents of the box and i came up with an estimated value of 500-700 points each!
If you included your intent to exchange the surplus SMs for more orks in your math, please disregard the above.

if you convert one terminator into a warboss in mega armour and the other four into meganobs, the dreadnought into a deff dread and overload on upgrades for all your models (the deffkoptas alone are over 200 if you upgrade them fully with buzzsaws and the like) and give all the nobs waggh! banners and bosspoles then its not hard to add a load of points to your army.

StaysCrunchyInMilk said...

Has anyone else noticed the dread is armed with a "sighs" multimelta?

BrassScorpion said...

Yes, *sigh", everyone's who's looked at the pictures and who's not legally blind has noticed that the Dreadnought is armed with a multi-melta. I actually held the starter set dreadnought at Baltimore Games Day courtesy of Ted Williams and it looks great, multi-melta and all.

Actually, I think it's a good idea, since the multi-melta arm adds diversity to the armaments that are available in the multi-part dreadnought kit instead of providing a redundant arm.

With the extra arms from the multi-part dreadnought or with the purchase of a Forge World dreadnought arm, the starter set dreadnought can even be customized.

By the way, the Web Exclusive Space Marine Sgt. is still being offered. Details at:

ASSAULT ON BLACK REACH
Price: $60 (I already pre-ordered one)

My Battle Bunker is already proudly displaying the full contents of this set. For any doubters out there, it has a nice, full rule book. I've seen it, it does exist, definitely.

The more I see the miniatures from this set the more impressed I am. They are as good as any plastics out there and as good as some metal miniatures too.

Anonymous said...

I've preordered this set already, it looks awesome

the captain is a great sculpt, the dred is a bit goofy but a good addition for the starting kids. they also give a good variety of orks to shoot up.

my only issue is that i hate the snap-together style miniatures.

reminds me of the 2nd ed box set, but to be fair the sculpting is loads better.

but i guess they want to get the kids into the game as quick as possible.

Anonymous said...

For the record this is a great ll add a lot to my ork army, it is still in need of a warboss so this will work out well. The rulebook is one of the mini ones that has 112 pages with no fluff but thats okay. As far as the dice and templates go they are always useful. I was wondering if this kit includes any transfers becouse it shows some on the gw pics. Also post if you live in moorpark and play warhammer 40k as i can rarely find anyone to play these days.

Anonymous said...

What wargear do the terminators have?

Anonymous said...

i'm suprised that the box contains no terrain, epsecially with the emphasis of it in the new rules. all you really need is maybe a couple of walls or barricades of something. even in the old box set you got a crashed ship, which i still use to this day. they should have included at least something. . .

Anonymous said...

this set looks awesome, and also its the only way to get plastic defkoptas

Anonymous said...

this box looks quality even im getting one and i collect tyranids
orks chaos space marine and normal space marine

hludwig said...

Everyone keeps call Ultramarines the most played Chapter but I see no facts to back this up. I have never seen a Ultramarines army ever in 6 years of playing 40K, and I live in in major US city. So does everyone keep calling it the default Space Marine Chapter?

Lonkan said...

Wow...
Being a total noob at this whole thing, it feels great to enter the hobby at a time like this!
I'm going halfsies with a friend who's a lot more versed in playing the game, he takes the orks while i get the rest.

I was NOT looking forward to having to buy small groups of marines for loads of cash just to get me started, now i get a basic starter-force of marines with a rulebook, templates, dice etc.
Sweet! Thank you, GW!
Oh, and by the way, i've been reading the fluff for years, and i must say that Ultras are just a bit cooler than the rest, something about their organisations resemblance to ancient Rome in certain parts... Hmm, maybe an idea for a future customized chapter...

Anonymous said...

wow, i totally got ripped off with the battle for macragge set, i think im gunna split this with my friend, marines for me, orcs for him. Im gunna put missles on the dreadnought instead though.
