SNEAK PEAK: IG and Black Reach Tidbits

IG pics brought to the community by Warseer's: vladsimpaler

Hi guys,

A couple of things for the weekend. First up we have this nice oversized pic of the back of the Black Reach boxed set. Its a newer version of the one released earlier this week, and we can now see the templates, rulebook, measuring sticks, and read all the text on the back.

Secondly, we have heard some very early Imperial Guard related rumors a little while back. While its not confirmation , these 2 pics lend some credibility to that earlier post. Here we see a "Commissar-Lord" who might definately be considered a new HQ, and the interior shot 3-d from the rumored Valkyrie kit.

~Its starting to feel like the IG rumor mill is beginning to rumble...

Great picture of the Assault On Black Reach box. Thanks!

The CAD pictures of the possible Valkyrie interior and fancy Commissar were in a book full of many such pictures presented by Ted Williams at the Special Guests table at Baltimore Games Day. To summarize, Ted W. told me that a lot of these things come about now basically because it's easy to "play" with images and come up with interesting variants. The Commissar model shown here and the unusually armed and possible rumoured "Iron Clad" Dreadnought picture shown in the Baltimore Games Day coverage elsewhere on this site are examples of such "playing" with existing sculpts. Thanks to GW's investment in CAD and other new tools, we'll hopefully see a lot more large kits like the Baneblade and cool variants of existing kits in the near future. Plastic Valkyrie? Sign me up for that! I'd like a plastic Thunderhawk too; well I can dream, can't I?

Glad to see the box set will be coming with templates, dice, and measuring sticks.

Hopefully the scenarios included in the black reach box set will be entertaining.

Why is the commissar wearing a feather boa around his neck? Is this some new method of inspiring fear in his troops?

Miggidy Mack said...

I'm so excited about the new valkyrie plastic kit that I turn on Hook and chant "Val-Ka-Ree" in place of Rufio and pretend they are all chanting with me.

looks like the rulebook is the cutdown full version.
Great! Am most impressed with the miniatures quality. I doubt anyone will be able to spot them easily with a bit of conversion work done on them.

And for everyone worried about the second assault cannon getting dropped, well, with this set you can swap out one of the cannons with a storm bolter armed one from the starter set and end up with two squads with assault cannon...

But from what I have seen in rumours, the heavy flamers are looking to be way more powerful for games with lots of terrain and cover.

Choices choices choices!

Plus the box does make it clear there is NO terrain pieces in the box.

Ugh, if you look at the pictures on the side of the box of Salamanders with the new Jet-black skin and (presumably) red eyes. what crap, they looked great the way they were. MY sallies will stay Afro-Caribbean, thankyou very much. I mean, honestly, the one army in the game that isn't always portrayed as a bunch of white dudes, and GW decides "Hey, let's get rid of that! We don't need Black people anyways, when we can have JET black people!" Seriously, fellow Salamanders - unite against this stupidity!

Very sweet!

to Dwayne Dibbly: The boa is to look stylin while being a total bad ass. haha Although I'd argue its a fur lined collar rather than a boa, which looks sweet and adds a touch of nobility and class which is always awesome in an IG commander IMO. :p

I'm just happy they brought back the red knuckle-destroyer rods. I mean the measuring sticks. Hours of fun to be had with those!

Its funny 2 people mentioned the Commissar's furry collar already...i'll make it 3 and say it looks dumb and very out of place on an otherwise awesome looking model!

The feather boa? Bleh, too much like the plastic haos warriors.

The CAD shot? To be honest, looks much more like a tank interior than a Valkyrie (pronounced 'Val' 'Kree') ....

Otherwise, at least things are still developing.

Looks like a new Gaunt figure, were it not for the fur collar.

The fur collar looks awesome, dammit.

@Lepp

Way to over react buddy. How about you wait until you see the actual box cover rather than a blown-up version of a photograph of another photograph on a box cover that is much larger, which has subsequently been reduced and then turned into a 72dpi image.

Any chance for the haters...

Yeah that's was I was thinking, given that trying to separate an ass cannon arm from its FW shoulder pad would probably end up in a broken shoulder pad. If I evenly mix reg termies with black reach termies in 2 squads, it ought to look alright. As opposed to the 'this is the pretty squad, and this is the plain one.." Now they'll all just be mediocre.

@ nosuchmethod,

That's a great idea! And your right, the chopper quotes alone would make it worth it! "how can you shoot women and children like that?" "it's easy, you just lead them a little less"... Or special missions to retrieve your commanding officers surf board? Now I think I might need a whole squadron of Valks just for the old war movie fun!

Havn't used any Commisars in my IG ever, since they are traitors didn't feel they needed the discipline...will wait for the new IG codex and see if any will make it into the army as 'overseers' or something...anyway....will definatly get the starter set....looks like one of the best they have produced to date...Good job GW, havn't been this excited since I started playing the game.

The latest update on price for the new starter set is that it will indeed be $60.

I think Im going to have to find an orc player to split a couple of boxes with me... heck, maybe Ill just start an orc army.

Damn GW if they make a plastic Valk. The last thing I need is to be inspired to start ANOTHER brand new army. (lol)

Obviously, he is a pimp. Don't make the pimp ask for his money twice.

At least the guardsman fits in the transport this time(yes I have facored in a base), Though I admit still on the small side. Fur trim looks good enough, not uber cool, but practical. It can be cold in the universe! Plus probably helps tie in with the greycoat guard and the Vostroyans. Saw a WD(aust.) with a converted Vostroyan army, would be surprised how easy is to fit commisar into it by just adding fur trim.

Came in to post that I agree about it looking like gaunt, however I dont think he made it to that rank. But it looks cool.

Valkyrie is a 3 syllable word. Check a dictionary. You pronounce all 3 syllables in Valkyrie. \val-ˈkir-ē also val-ˈkī-rē, ˈval-kə-rē\

Docrailgun said...

Maybe the much-maligned figure is Commissar Frankenfurter?

Anonymous said...

I've joked about vehicle model sizes occasionally, but never complained about the issue nor actually cared about it. Let's look at this issue more closely and see why it's a good thing the vehicles are actually a bit undersized and why scaling them up to be more "realistic" is a colossally bad idea.

If all the vehicles in 40K, such as the Rhino, were actually big enough to carry the payloads described such models would be bigger, harder to store, harder to fit in model transport cases (especially in quantity) and they'd be more expensive too (again, especially in quantity).

If the models look cool and sort of big enough to pass for the job, that's fine by me, even with the older versions that were even smaller. It's a fantasy game where guys carrying magic swords can slay monsters that are 100 times their own mass, but oh yes, let's gripe about the scale of the Rhinos being slightly small and "unrealistic".

Myssa Rei said...

Actually, instead of Gaunt, the first commissar-character that leapt to mind was Ciaphas Cain. Except for the bolt pistol and fur-lined cloak (remember, he's been with the Valhallans for most of his active career), it looks just about right.

Universit of Glamorgan said...

Nah I'm still right.

Anonymous said...

I do not think the vehicles are undersized.
Okay, I admit that the full payload of Space Marines in a Rhino would create an atmosphere like in the Tokyo Metro at rush hour, but:
It is the 41st-thousand century and maybe it is more clever to have standard vehicles (not superheavies) a bit undersized to cope with tech and also rougher battlefield conditions?

"The bigger they are, the easier they are to nuke from orbit."

- imperial navy phrase -

Dwayne Dibbly said...

Nah its definately Commissar Frankenfurter, with his master crafted bolt pistol "Man-Stopper", and his trademark feather boa, gifted to him after his victory at the Battle of Brokeback Mountain. When he's not inspecting the men you'll find him riding in his pink Chimera nicknamed Priscilla.

The only thing sillier than this thread about the Fur coat is an argument about pronunciation, pronunciation is fluid, it changes with regions, time and dialects, thats why there are words with silent letters, accents, and different spellings of the same words depending on which country you're in.... it's like nailing water to a wall.

Anonymous said...

About Vehicle size - you have to remember that models are usually in a fighting stance. Legs are spread, swords out, guns at ready. Not to mention the 1/4 inch extra base height. When in a transport your weapon is stowed and you are trying to squeeze into a tiny folded seat like a sardine. Just look at the Forgeworld transports like the tau orca. They pack about 50 fire warriors in where you could probably only fit 10-20 on bases. Take a look at special forces popping out of a blackhawk. Its crazy! they just seem to keep coming.

@Glamorgan - SLAP!

RT Maitreya said...

Anyone who complains about vehicle sizes has obviously never ridden in an IFV of any kind during their armchair officer careers. The modern GW rhino and chimera are PALACES. I'm going to install a f'ing hot tub in one of my chimeras one day. Only ten occupants? If that beast were in today's Yoo-Nigh-Ted States army, we'd pack two whole squads in the thing, and we'd just be glad for the AV10 and internal combustion engine! A/C would, of course, either be optional or not working.

IMNSHO, only the original '80s rhino and land raiders with present 30mm space marines are at a "realistic scale" if you dare use such a phrase.

I have enough trouble trying to store and transport all my vehicle models to and from the store for games, especially when Land Raiders and Baneblades are included. GW vehicle models do not need to be any larger.

What's a Glamorgan? Wait... wait...disturbances in the earth's magnetic field are telling me it's a place where no one has ever heard of a dictionary but they've certainly heard of Internet "trolls".

Does anyone else notice the small print on the back reads "two complete starting armies"?

I take it this means terminators are soon to be Troops choices? Does anyone have any info on this?

I'm guessing it's gonna be like MegaNobs.

On the models themselves: I don't like 5th edition, but there's no denying GW has done a freakin' sweet job on this starter set.

I can´t even recall how often I have read a queston like this...., no seriously!!!

This leads me to the conclusion that anyone asking this question must be a)very new to the hobby or
b)near brain-dead.(furioes but not to serious rant)

I´ll say it once and maybe twice, and if i realy feel like it a third time:

TWO 5-MAN SQUADS OF SPYCE MARINES ARE TWO LEGITIMATE TROOP CHOICES!!!

Please don´t make me laugh with speculations like Terminators becoming Troop choices... .

PS.:I know i wrote spyce!

"TWO 5-MAN SQUADS OF SPYCE MARINES ARE TWO LEGITIMATE TROOP CHOICES!!!"

But if the trend with current codices continues, I doubt a half-strength squad of SM will be able to pack a heavy weapon. And last time I checked, Combat Squads did not make the unit suddenly take up 2 FoC slots.

So, assuming the FoC stays the same, I'm guessing that codex: SM will have a way of making terminators troops somehow (either that or the dreadnaught....)

I'm gonna take a stab that the captain lets termies become troops, kinda like how a warboss makes MegaNobs troops. It'd seem like a tempting enough way to make someone leave their chaplain at home.

Anyone else have any ideas on this?

And btw, I've been playing 40 since early 4th edition, so I'm no veteran, but please don't assume I'm braindead. Considering the latest trend in codices, it seems to me a logical deduction.

You'll have to excuse anonymous 10:16's slightly emotional outburst in response to your remark but you have to see this in context. Many GW "fan" sites are inundated with the whiny remarks of whinging snotty gimps who see every move GW makes as some kind of subversive attempt to alienate them, break their army or rip them off. Your comment that Termies look like they're going to become troop choices seems paranoid and reads too much into it.

A more moderate interpretation on the contents of the box would be that its an effort to provide a range of units that will cover almost all the major rules, from walkers, skimmers, fast vehicles, the range of armour saves, power weapons templates etc.... nothing too sinister just a damn good deal!

Anonymous said...

@hobo hunter

First of all, it wasn´t my intention to insult, but to make my post as

memorable as possible(without behaving indecent).
It´s also possible that, playing against a little twat, that has to ask every

single time on what throw a bolter wounds a space marine, but passes 9 out of

10 5+ invulnerable saves, has made me a bitter cynical husk of my former

cheery self... .

So, now that i´ve cast the self-pity aside, let´s speculate!

Altough you make a point, i am not convinced the combat squad rule will

definitly be the same as in C:DA and C:BA, considering the first is more of

an experiment in my eyes (scouts as elites, which is pretty awkward, as they

are still only the recruits of the mainly codex-true-chapter, unlike the

space wolves, a non-cdex-chapter, where the youngsters get power armor and

the scouts are sneaky pros, etc.) and the second seems more of a quick

do-over than a worhty army list, encorporating mostly good ideas but not good

enough to actually charge money for it.
Now for "combat squads":
although i like the rule(and i mean, reeeeealy like it), it doesn´t strike me

as very clever that you have to take 5 men with an "assault weapon" before

you can get the juicy heavies, as both of the squads are of similar

usefulness. the assault one, charging into the enemy using all of their

weapons, and the heavy one, remaining stationary and being essentialy a single

heavy weapon with 5 wounds.
Regarding this, i´d say it´s only proper that a five man squad should be

able to select assault or heavies, further considering that GW seems to learn

of past mistakes like C:CSM.

Captain making termies troops:
Again a persuasive argument, but lets look at the things the new gizmos the

brother-catpain will recieve: iron halo and combat tactics and additionaly

the rumored one point of BS above chaplain and librarian (or rather the cut

on their BS), not to mention the other wargears that might be "captain only".
In my opinion they ARE a tempting enough way to make someone leave their

chaplain at home, and to be honest, a captain making termies troops, isn´t quite the same as a warboss and meganobs.
A waaaghboss attracts other big orks to his cause, call it orkarisma, so it is natural for him to surround himself with da biggest baddest boyz in the waaagh to further his slaughter. a captain on the other hand has a set contingent of warriors at his bidding, utilising that part of his force which is most appropriate to vanquish the foes of the emperor, so making terminators his "choice de jour" would stand opposed to the notion of space marines to be flexible. IMO making ANY list entry troops would be more useful than a "terminator exclusive club".
Lastly, I think the C:O is the only one wherein a HQ lets you take this and that as a troops choice and that this is an exclusivly orkish flavour to the armylist, but be aware that i haven´t actually read the C:DoC(only read tons of stuff ABOUT it), so if i´m wrong about this,
than maybe YOU ARE RIGHT!

Again, I would like to apologise to almost everyone that felt insulted, but
the point I least agree with you is that enduring the past few years 40K made you no veteran. I salute you Sir(?)!
