SNEAK PEAK: Images from Crusade

Hi guys,

Its dead on the news front today, so I thought you would like to see some porn. 40k porn that is. One of the things that I've been working on is bringing up our picture quality for our mini-dexes and campaign books. Its a tough one, and lately I've been playing less and lugging around my Canon and tripod a bit more than I like. Here is a small set of pics from the Macharian book I think you guys might like.

We have new regiments, some of our old favorites, an Imperial air-wing courtesy of Gentleben, and yet more images of the Imperial Guard smashing their way to the Galaxy's edge.

~So let me know, how am I doing? If you like the pics it can't be all that bad. Anything in particular stand out?

Your choice in contrast is excellent. In all of the examples, the models 'pop' quite nicely.

I especially like the copious use of terrain and grazillions of trees. We tend to play our games with way too many trees to make it interesting, and the tables look very much like that.

I am severely envious of your photo-fu.

Fabulous picture quality :> really great detail.

All I would say is, don't be afraid to change the angle slightly (looking a little downward) and also having fewer models in shot :> But looking great! Wish I couls take part in this stuff. I have a small armoured company, sitting there with very few battles under its belt!!

Those are some great shots, and even better models. I'm going to have to say I love the aircraft, the scouts, and the Tyranids best.

Great looking photos of great looking models

Great imagery, those pics make me wish I was there on the day, really inspiring stuff.

The photos that Forgeworld use for their cityfight scenery taken from a low angle, as if they were taken by someone on the battlefield are really evocative when done properly. The picture of the centaurs looks a bit like that and its really effective more of that please!

Awesome job, love your work.

These pics are great, what kinda of cammera are you using? I have a Kodak that I am not happy with.

I really like the picture with the flyers. Seeing all those aircraft plus the battle raging down below is pretty cool.

Great pics! I have to say that the pic with the Marauder is my favorite. Makes me want to get off my duff and put my Marauder Destroyer together soon!

Hello there Bigred!

Me likes it mate! lol. Picture and models are top notch quality. Focus is perfect and slso picture composition. I wouldn't change anything on them other than to take more... there's never too many pictures of cool miniatures on the tabletop. Can't wait for the book to come out myself.

I have to agrre with dwayne dibbly... You should try to take some pics from a "trooper's eye-level" point of view. It usually looks great.

And with a bit of photoshop-fu (a bit of blur here, a few "crappy old camera" tricks, etc...) those could be turned into fluff-oriented pics rather than the classic "player's view" pics...

When you're taking pictures, are you taking pics during a game, or do you specifically pose them?

but chould be even more cool...

How about pictures from the "battlefield overlooking commisar/surpreme commander"

IG is amazing to watch in their large numbers ;)

First let me say that I think the pictures are very good-- many levels above the "flash in a dark cave" picks you often see of games on the web.

But I would like to see a little more variance on the depth of field to add focus and drama to some of the pictures. Like the first one, less DoF to blur the background Eldar and others will make it feel the like planes are higher up and farther apart.

And the Guard/Nid pics I would have liked more so that all of them are in focus, so feel like a tight close quarters battle. Having the big guy in back in focus seems to draw the drama away from the 'stealers charging the Guard, which from the framing seems to be the main subject.

What type of lens are you using? When taking table top pics, I usually set the Canon to Av, and change the aperture to 8 or 11 to get a wide battle field in focus, or to 3-4 to get a spot focus on a model or group. Of course it all depends on how far away you are, how far apart are the models, lens, etc, etc.

I think the photos are great. My favorite is the last one of the Centaurs because it hides the base of the scenery behind it and looks more "real".

My least favorite is the penal legion spread with all of the trees because you see all of the tree bases - some of them are hanging off the hills, etc.

I'd say go for angles that hide the bases of the scenery.

In the pics with secenery bases, try spreading out flock on the edge of the scenery bases to better hide the transition between table and scenery bit.

You can also play with photoshop/gimp to create some "realism".

Looks good! Many of the earth-toned models tend to get lost in the colors of terrain, but there's not a lot you can do about that.

I for one love the pics....I only get a chance to actually play a game about once every 2 months (work...family etc...)...so most of mmy hobby time is spent prepairing (building, painting), making new lists and reading etc....One of my favorite parts of the hobby is seeing nicley done armies on nice terrain battleing for Galactic Supremecy!...Keep it up

We need to see more pictures of those 40k beastmen! They are too cool to have covered in trees.

These pics are great, part of me wishes that I could add some constructive ideas, but theylook great. I agree that trying to get some "trooper," shots would be fun as well (depending on how much time you have).

The two most impressive sources of photos like you are attempting (in my opinion) are the retouched Forgeworld photos that look like there are in action battlefield pictures, and a series of color WW1 photos I saw. The Forgeworld photos manage to convey the energy and intensity of the models that FW makes. And the WW1 photos gave the stark sense of being in this miserable chunk of hell, as most of the photos were soldiers at rest or the surroundings.

Wow, those pictures are amazing. That has to be a nice camera.

That is an AMAZING Maruader picture.

Great pics. I really like imagining the sense of fear arising from the guardsmen encountering slavering beastmen charging you through the woods, and the command squad making a last stand against the unstoppable Tyranid menace. Guard can really be more dramatic than Marines since they really give a sense of humanity's frailty and struggle in the dark years of the 41st millenium. I also like the detailing, mud, and battle-damage on the centaurs. Everything is well painted and photographed.

Wow...

You're the photographer I always wish I could be.

Since the pre-release copies of Macharian Crusade are getting passed around like last year's prom queen, are we closer to getting an actual release date in ink?

We of the L.A. Beaches Area Gamers (BAGGINS) intend to play, but we'd like to schedule it with a Fantasy campaign until then (or after then if MC is imminently near), of course.

Thanks,
RTM

I have a casio 1-point-nothing megapixel camera, and it blows. I've been debating buying something more serious to photograph my toys, and I think this has sealed the deal.

I really like the centaurs. The blue/yellow company bars are an interesting switch from the norm, but it works great.

Good job again, and keep it all coming.

I have noticed in the pics of the flyers that the thunderbolts are being held aloft by what looks like a thick clear plastic rod. Is there a write up somewhere here that explains how to make the stand like that or could you explain how to make a flying stand like that for 40k sized flyers?

bigred said...

The clear acrylic rod is from a toilet plunger from Target...

No joke, its the cheapest way to get one compared to hunting around hobby/home decor shops.

I like the photos, but I do have a suggestion. Maybe you could squeeze in more troop types into each photo? Since the macharian crusade seems to be focusing on IG, It'd be good to see photos that show examples of troop, vets, storm troopers and armour from each regiment, in action if possible
