So its a new month and we are busy beavers down here. 5th Edition is upon us. We are putting the finishing touches on the Macharian Crusade and should have it in your hands later this month. The big news is that BoLS is preparing to expand. Warhammer Fantasy coverage is coming. It won't happen overnight but it is in the works.
What that means for your guys is the same 40k news, homebrew rules, hobby articles, and crazy campaigns that you've come to know and love. There just will be Fantasy posts stuffed in there as well. What we would like to know from you guys is what you would want us to cover more of in Fantasy? Daily news, Tacticas, Hobby and Terrain, or something else entirely?
~Get the word out and you know the drill... poll, left column, Attack!!!

personally i really dig the news and rumors, as looking at a clean site with level-headed posters beats sifting through neckbeard nerd rage over on warseer.
fantasy expansion will be awesome.
however, we could use more loldongs like /tg/ ...
>>shift.
lol whut? stop being made of FAIL, newfag. Keep the 4chan shit on 4chan, fa/tg/uy.
I voted for Space Wolves.
I would love to see the same quality of news/rumours that 40k sees and some lovely tactics.
hey could it be same site different page?
For selfish reasons (I'm only interested in 40K) but im sure fantasy only fanboys would appreciate it too.
Either way you're still the best 40K site around.
I'd like to chime in on the news & rumors request. As BoLS is a very reliable source, it would be nice to have the same service for WHFB as well.
Furthermore, I'd also like to see painting tutorials. Those "one squad in two hours" for 40K tutorials are wonderful and it would be great to get the same for WHFB as well.
Tactics and News and modeling. In that order
Hobby and terrain sorta go together with 40k so in my opinion could be combined.
This is my source for upcoming news and rumors, so I'd like to see more of the same, just with fantasy added.
I agree with most of the others: news & rumors for WHFB would be awesome.
If you manage to squeeze other stuff like painting, tactics, etc. in there as well it would be great, but news would be my personal priority :)
I also think that some kind of sorting or filtering would be nice to have, so the reader can decide to pick only 40K or WHFB or both.
once again best regards from Austria (Europe, not Australia *hehe*) and keep up the good work!

"I also think that some kind of sorting or filtering would be nice to have, so the reader can decide to pick only 40K or WHFB or both."
I hope so :p
Games Workshop should never have diversified into LoTR - BoLS should be careful diluting an excellent site with fantasy...
as per others, some sort of filter would be good.
yeah, i agree with the above
I wouldn't call it "diluting" per se; fantasy has every bit of the concentration of awesome that 40K does (if not more). But putting the fantasy side on a different URL would be a good call (with a lot of interlinking of course)
One interesting side of this is that any newcomers will just assume from the site name that you guys are all about skaven, since bell-iconography in fantasy goes almost exclusively to them.
i think its a great idea. keep having any new stuff appear in the new news section but have 2 menus like the current one so you dont have to sift through 40k stuff to find fanatasy and visa versa.
This sounds awesome, if fantasy gets the exact same treatment as 40k does then i'm all for it
You guys do phenomenal on 40K. Don't dilute yourselves. Better to do one thing EXTREMELY well than multiple things mediocre. Just don't dilute the product (especially since w pay so much for it - grin).
Would suggest that you keep them separate if you do branch out though.
If it is possible to have a filter, I think many of the sites regulars would appreciate it. If that isn't possible perhaps a different site name using the BoLS format and links but with WHFB. If that isn't possible I would suggest that diversifying may (MAY, not will) led to less support, unless you are going to be adding flylords to pick up the new work load.
First it is revealed that you have real jobs (with ad banners no less) and now there is talk of Fantasy aboard?
Surely two signs the apocalypse is nigh.

Personally I would rather hear more about your Aeronautica Imperialis squadrons and battles, your Titan legion projects, etc. More old school/Epic fluff updated for modern rules please.
Fantasy news and rumors in your usual format would be cool, but I worry that you guys will start spreading yourself too thin trying to do everything (leaving longer times where we have to wait for things like the Macharian book!)
i am 100% for this. same page, different page, filters, whatever. fantasy is awesome and isn't won in the army construction. the game actually takes skill.

\flame on!
\\i kid, 40k takes SOME tactics.
Today is a great example of what concerns me about adding Fantasy content. I went to bed last night and woke up to THREE updates on the BoLS site. Now, I love the updates. But, I fear that on a busy day with three updates for 40K(ish) stuff and a couple for WHFB, things will get lost, ignored, or just plain missed.
This leaves me firmly in the separate but interlinked url camp.
I am excited about this, considering I just started up a Goblin army.
I dont know if the existing staff of this blog plays fantasy or not. But if you have to bring on additional people and they arent the same quality you need to cut it.
Not interested in Fantasy.
If you had a fantasy section as good as this 40k one, then I think you'd make a lot of people happy :P
OMG, NO FANTASY PLEASE
LEAVE the FANTASY to some SUBSECTIONS
I am always NOT-VERY-IMPRESS with GW Fantasy models and their gameplay style...
OK you may say I am spoilted by the PrivatePress's Warmachine and Horde stuff... but PLEASE WH40k is way TOO awesome right now; and the VERY reason I and my entire group are here for... dun throw in the not-so-good stuff with the good ones...
So yes, in short, I vote for a filter!
Er...
WH40k > Warmachine/Horde > WH Fantasy
I sold my
Warmachine Khador Army
and
Horde Skorne Army
just to get my hands on
the brillant new SM stuff and to leave aside some cash for the coming new IG stuff
Fantasy are not really that fantastic after some hands-on, and I think Warmachine and Horde are kinda better... for the fantasy...
Still maybe a little more will not hurt, but I suggest another blog for the fantasy... so it wont be disturbing to some WH40k like me...
WFB is a fantastic game, much better than 40k. I love them both, of course, or I wouldn't be here. If you do fantasy, filter them in some way, and bring on board some FlyKings (cue new logo with martini glass and fly wings or 3 pustules or something) to manage material. An equivalent to the Imperial Bell of Lost Souls might be the giant whatthehell the flagellants haul out to celebrate the lifting of the siege of Middenheim. You know the one, with the giant bear, and the people hanging themselves, and the cymbals. You know, right? That's the thing I would like to model as a giant siege engine some day.
RTM
Personally, I'd much rather see you cover, in descending order:
Specialist Games (Necromunda, Bloodbowl especially)
Warmachine/Hordes
Flames of War
Lord of the Rings
LotR variants (pirates, old west)
Warhammer Ancients
over WFB. Don't know why, but WFB has no interest for me. Maybe because it's fantasy, and there are other cheaper games in the same genre.
I'd vote for separate sites, but interlinked. I have a marginal interest in fantasy (mainly as a source for conversion parts).
You guys are doing a great job... If it wasn't for you guys, I wouldn't have even known that 5th was coming out (I'm sort of in the middle of nowhere right now).
You know what would berreally cool, If you guys re-did the zombie pirats of the vampire coat list.
well, I've got to wade in on the no fantasy side. Adding another system will mean less content for 40k. There are only so many hours in the day. It is better to do one thing very well. If you wanted to expand you could do various articles for the specialist games or fantasy or ? when ever the mood strikes you rather than having to commit to an extensive fantasy section. I'm sure no one will mind an occasional epic article or something just thrown in once in a while.
If it is going to sacrifice the quality of WH40K you guys can bring for us... HELL NO!
But if it doesnt... Hey! it doesnt hurts!
Still as someone had pointed out, Warmachine/Horde is way much better than WHB... just look at those PP dwarves (Mers and Order)... I mean.. JUST LOOK AT THEM... then take a peek at thos GW dwarves...
Then the answer will be clear... if it is not, then maybe how "machinal skeletal automation" sounds to you?
Of cause, the only thing not in PP are the crazy and uber cool CHAOS, the crazier still and totally evil DAEMONS and maybe the even more uber crazy friggin' fun loving ORKS!
As a few others have said, I'd enjoy seeing the same sort of stuff you do currently for 40k for WHFB too.
But for clarity it might be more sensible to start a new blog for that, with the same team--and a link from BoLS to there, and vice-versa. That way it'd be simple to sort the Fantasy from 40k stuff.
Plus the Bell of Lost Souls has connotations for the 40k universe. A different name would help characterise it as being a WHFB site. Perhaps "Old Slann Warp Gates" or something.
hmmmm not so sure I'm a fan of a fantasy element being included (unless of course you picked up a few extra bloggers so we have a total gain to no loss).
But I suppose it was inevitable.
OK what would I like to see? Firstly a decent campaign (to do away with shameful instances such as Albion). New monster rules for use in games (e.g. the different dragon types).
Painting guides and heavy emphasis on the troops of fantasy.
No terrain for a bit please, really (personally) had enough of germanic buildings, castles and hills :P.
"Of cause, the only thing not in PP are the crazy and uber cool CHAOS, the crazier still and totally evil DAEMONS and maybe the even more uber crazy friggin' fun loving ORKS!" ~ Quote
LOL nice one, hell yea, PP is better in the drawf, undead, beastiary, warmachines (no steam tanks yet though), magic, cavalry, nature-lovers (kinda draw on this one Wood-Elves are not bad but kinda too colorful abd somewhat cartoony) department
I disagree on the Chaos thingy, Horde has Chaos-like stuff = EVERBLIGHT! and it combines the best of ALL worlds, of Dark elves, Orks and Chaos elements into one solid sick race!
But true be told, the lack of Daemons, in the Horde does somewhat feels lacking... so maybe yea, Daemons...
Still if there is a need/Urge to go Daemons, GW had made it possible to do it in WH40K! No more pawning weak humanoids against the evil warp, its will be HUGE battle against the height of Men tech and psychic!!!
Anyway, its always nice for something more to look at, so hell yea go for it, would be better though if it is the Warmachine/Horde line... jus my 2 cents
I am personally more partial to 40k than fantasy but the solution could be an easy bifurcation with a 40k tab at the top of the page (the default) and a fantasy tab next to it. That way everyone can be fed and placated.
nice, but just stick it to news and rumours...
we already had TONS of our sites for paint jobs and such, just the news and rumours would be nice... and just those
Throwing WM/Horde would be the better
I'd like stuff like fluff, special characters, unit ideas etc that are tested as well as you always do. That would be worth coming back for ;)
Personally I'd rather you stick to just 40k.
That or make the WHFB stuff easy to skip/sort so it does not get in the way of 40K.
Not everyone plays both or wants to hear about WHFB or LOTR.
So If you do it I hope you can keep it separate.
I also think your poll should have a "I'm not interested in WHFB at all".
I promise, the BoLS 40k content you all know and love will not be impacted in any way.
This is a case of new resourses coming online to give BoLS more content, not splitting our current resources between 2 games.
And if you cross your fingers, there could indeed be BoLS Fantasy minidexes, special ICs and the like...
I promise, the sky is not falling :)
One more vote for a filter. I really only view Fantasy as a source for conversion parts.
I like the idea. But you guys should stick to only tactica, modeling, gallery, speed painting then finaly news and rumors. thier are plenty of terrain posts out their
no fantasy, 40k only please!
No 40K, Fantasy only please!
I'm all for coverage of Fantasy topics. Fantasy is just as interesting and diverse as 40k. If you guys are confident in your ability to handle both, more power to you!
Btw, I've never understood the hostility of some 40k players to fantasy. Not your cup of tea? That's cool, but i never understood when people have outright hostility towards a different game system.
I really want to see a day to day update rumors and news of fantasy like you gents are doing with 40k.
And to the person down below named Anonymous that was dissing Shift I hope he burns.
Take care all.
-Sigose
IF you guys decide to do a different site name, may I recommend the Screaming Bell? to keep with the 'Bell" theme :)
Matt Varnish @work
Just a thought, possibly a poll to help decide the future publications of this awsome site:
40k only
fantasy mixed
different site but same people
just a thought
To Sigose,
The anonymous poster dissing shift was a joke. What he posted is exactly what shift was referring to, and exactly why I no longer visit Warseer. That and Warseer's abysmal search engine, which is entirely worthless and shouldn't even be present. Warseer is all about quantity, not quality. Good stuff appears, but it takes the dedicated leet doods at BoLS to sift through the page after page of "neckbeard nerd rage" to find it. The Emperor recognizes their sacrifice, and they will be saved for it!

@Nurglespuss:
"hmmmm not so sure I'm a fan of a fantasy element being included (unless of course you picked up a few extra bloggers so we have a total gain to no loss)."
That's exactly the idea. The Fantasy content will be coming from new bloggers.
Meh.
Personally, where's the "No Fantasy Wanted" option in the poll?
Yah for Fantasy!
I can't believe people are still saying "oh I think we should only have 40k" even when mkerr and bigred have both said 40k coverage will not be diminished in the slightest.
Bring on fantasy and the ingame tactic(rather then pre game, ie army list, tactics) goodness!
This is a bad idea. Stick with being the best 40K site on the web and don't dilute your skillz. I feel it's inevitable because you didn't give a "Don't do this" option on your poll, but seriously, don't.
Do what you want, buddy. I'll read what I like and I'll skip by what doesn't interest me, just as I do already.
If anyone gets around to reading this, here is my two cents. If you guys could give WFB the same quality work as 40K that would be awesome. As far as I know you guys are the only ones that GW gives this information to, and if they will give the same amount of news as they do for 40K that would be awesome. Lastly, if the same amount of energy was applied to WFB, that would be awesome. Either way, don't get yourselves in over your heads. Thanks for the limitless dedication to us loyal cultists.
I'd love to see a fantasy element added to BoLS. If it's anywhere near the quality of the 40K stuff, I'd be very happy indeed.
I agree with those who think a separate site, linked to this one, is the way to go. That way everyone can pick and choose what they want.
I'd most like to see general army tactics and overviews to start with to give those of us dedicated to 40K a teaser for fantasy. Then you can move onto news and rumours, modelling ideas and campaigns and generally do what you do best :)
@Mkerr
Great! Then just as a suggestion, make this bit the REALLY clear bit:
I.E> people are gaining everything and losing nothing. In which case we gain extra visitors, and they (and some exsting Fantasy+40k players) gain a brilliant free service.
Cheers.
do you guys even know how to play fantasy?
"Anonymous said...
do you guys even know how to play fantasy?"
Yes, I do. And I feel indifferent to it. It never caught my fancy, and even after playing it, it still wasn't my cup of tea. I've played two different rules sets even, still nothing. I've tried painting up armies because my friends were playing, and I still really just wanted to paint IG. So, yeah.
I don't mind Fantasy content, I just want an option to opt out if that's not too much trouble for the Fly Lords. I don't think it's unreasonable.
@ anonymous
Yes, I play Empire.
Unfortunately for me, Fantasy lacks the creative, forward driving element of 40k (hence my preference) I find this to be a mixture of the way the rules dictate the game, but just as strongly (if not more so) because the inventiveness of the plot driven stories, games, campaigns etc. in Warhammer is missing a certain element, continual excitement.
I am glad to see that the current Fantasy has moved away from character focus, however, due to the general massed rank armies, these characters have lost alot of sparkle, which was never replaced in game or in fluff.
Thats just my two cents.
