Hi Guys,
A couple of news items for you all. First off FIREBASE#7 is just around the corner so keep an eye out for it.

Secondly, BoLS has recieved word that the Black Reach Box WILL contain a full mini-rulebook, similar to the Battle for Macragge set. That means a full set of rules (as opposed to a cut down version that would only allow use of the included minis) in a black and white format that matches the rules section of the hardcover release. It does not contain any of the the lavish full color army background, hobby, and campaign sections.
~It sounds like it was a tough call on the mini-rulebook and there are good cases to be made on both sides of the issue, but at last it seems the issue is settled. I'm personally still planning on getting both hardcover and Black Reach.

As I supposed, the second leaked PDF is the FULL real "Black Reach" booklet
"Black Reach" will be a must-buy for anyone that plays Marines or Orks. September is too far away.
I don't play Marines or Orks and I think that the Black Reach box is still a good buy.
That mini rule book is excellent for gaming. Plus it does give you a reasonable starter army for Marines and Orks.
I'll be getting both as well.
Oh, this is excellent news!
Now, I'll actually buy the Black Reach box as well as the Gamers Edition set.
What an absolutely terrific box set for beginners!
I'm definitely buying 1 box!
It's a shame this won't be out for the release of 5th ed, but I guess in the grand scheme that September isn't too far off.
I suppose the new SM Codex will be out by the time Black Reach arrives?
My life has become one looooong wait, counting the days... fortunately todays White Dwarf has eased a little of the pain I havent had a chance to read it yet but it looks like it has 40k content for the first time in months... next week the rule book will soothe me a little more... then I'm just going to have to wait 2 long months until the boxed set.... aaah I feel so pathetic.
Yes, waiting for the great stuff to arrive has really become a hardship.
I play Marines and Orkz, so Black Reach is a must. Furthermore, the Bolter case with the new rule book was just to good to resist, so I advanced ordered that, too. The fact that Black Reach contains a full mini rule book is a really nice add-on for me as it allows me to leave my hardcover rulebook nice and clean in its shelf.
Currently, for me the toughest question is when GW is going to ship the advanced orders and if make the shipments to Switzerland arrive the same day when everyone in the US gets the stuff.
Who was the guy who recently compared the joys and pains from GW with Slaanesh? ;-)
It was a tough call? How is it a tough call to actually give people the convienence of a mini rulebook when they have paid 40 quid for the set? What case is there for not doing it?
And btw, making people buy the coregame and the rulebook would nearly double the price of getting into the hobby.
Tough call.
Any word on the price of the Black Reach box yet?
got me the rule book on order, and i will most def be getting "reach"! i dont play Orks or SM but i have been planning on doing orks and DA for a wee while so this is a great excuse to start.
...of GW
There was never any doubt at all as to us putting the mini-rulebook in the Black Reach set. All rumours to the contrary were just that - rumours!
agreed, it def shouldn't be a "tough call". Even from the standpoint of money grubbing management - I think they'd sell more minis if they had the rules posted free online (maybe with all the accouterments only available in nice, hardcover published supplements).
The clincher is of course that most dedicated players buy the hardcover book AND a boxed set (or eight). And then end up spending another $300 filling out that tyranid army they have the beginnings for but never actually wanted/needed.
Well, given what it costs to really get started from scratch in this game, was this ever in doubt?
Example: after my girlfriend (on a whim) decided that she wanted to play and bought the 40k starter box I gave her about 1200 points of my orks and a Reaper mini case. I figured it out that @ today's current prices that translates into approximately $400, were she to buy it all new (excluding the aformentioned starter box).
Now, for a new gamer, considering the cost of getting into this financial nightmare of a hobby, buying a $60 starter box (despite being the steal that it is, new gamers don't always know this), only to find that there was a stripped down rule book in it, and they would ALSO have to buy a $50 rule book to really play, PLUS another couple hundred dollars of minis, and then there's terrain, dice, etc... Hell, I'd find some OTHER way to keep myself entertained. (They still might but I started over a decade ago) You can't piss people off straight out of the box if you want to get them to come back.
So I don't think that it was ever in doubt that the starter box would have a mini rule book in it. Just makes sense.
Wow, THAT was long winded, sorry to go off on a tangent there...

Well i think like any hobby these days it is expensive to get into, no one ever doubts that, but compare it to something else a lot of young people are into...Video Games.
Want to get into that form Scratch?
Ok $400-500 for a system, more if you are a PC gamer.
Now a few accessories will run you another $100 (extra controller, proper A/V cables, etc)
And lastly to play a game they each run $60-80. And games will usually only last you a week or two these days before they are old/boring/beaten to death.
Also keep in mind that most new systems require a HDTV to play them to full effect, so eventually figure in $600-$2000 for a new TV down the road (compare that to a Warhound or Reaver titan squadron)
So even compared to the hugely popular hobby of Video games, Warhammer stacks up pretty well, with costs being the same for start up and a starting army, with which you will get much more use of than any game (or 5 games at that)
Now I am a video gamer too, so i know both sides of this coin, i don't consider one superior, just made a comparison to show warhammer collecting a different light.
I'll have to get that Firebase downloaded. I kind of like their stuff. A lot of the pics are of armies made of really old minis. I like that.
Hooray for the mini rule book! I have a million Space Marines (but always need a few more) and a few Orks so a box or two of Black Reach sounds like a hell of a deal to me!
That is awesome news. The two sets of Marines I am splitting with a buddy will make a nice renegade set of Deathwing AND getting a full set of rules to boot... PWNSOME

Touché!
That's a really good point actually. I don't think of video gaming much because I don't do that as much anymore, I just have an old Xbox & standard ol' TV. I also play EVE online, which has killed my appetite to drop $3-400 dollars on an Xbox 360 set up (which I suppose is pretty dumb considering that that costs $20 a month to play). Dunno if you'd wholly factor in the HDTV, as that's nice to have regardless of whether or not you play video games (I play 40k, so I can't afford an HDTV myself)
Even still, that stuff comes with all the required instructions as far as I know (though no games to play on it initially from what I understand). I never understood why it would be thought that the Black reach box would be any different. If you want to get people hooked on their new toys, you gotta give them all the rules to go with said toys from the start. Then they'll want a codex, and a tank, and a.....

That's comforting to know. The rumors of a partial rulebook made me start to question how much GW cared for it's fanbase. Their recent changes had me thinking they were shifting more towards a friendlier relationship with their customers, and now I'm glad to hear news that this is still the case.
Aye, Master Darksol, they do seem to be treating their customers better these days. Along with the way the rules are going re: 5th, I like what I see. I think they've learned their lessons well. Still a little way to go, but definitely heading in the right direction.
As for Black Reach, I don't collect Marines or Orks but it would be a good deal otherwise. I'll be getting the hardcover as its a very nice book.
well that is not a good comparision since a computer can be used for much more than gaming where as the Models only have one purpose. Not to mention that some people may not want to spend the time painting when they could be online trashing some bozos.
I'll be buying the mini rule book, but I highly doubt I'll invest on the big hardcover book. Last edition's was such an epic waste of $50 that I completely regretted it. I might - and I emphasis the word "might" - buy the starter set for the rule book and the standard marines, to make my army's regiment a bit more diverse.

Thank you and goodbye
For the better part of a year (feb 07 to mar 08), I was a WoW addict. Played at least 2 hours a night, and I was known to spend entire weekends playing, stopping only to use the bathroom, grab a bite, or sleep for 4 or 5 hours. My girlfriend asked me to find a new hobby that didn't leave me glued to a computer screen for hours on end. I pulled out my packed away minis and paints and got back into 40k in full force. I've preordered the big rulebook and I am so looking forward to getting black reach so I can start an Ork army.
I've been trying to squash the "no mini-rule book" rumor here for a few weeks now, so I'm glad to see that it's finally becoming widespread knowledge. Apparently, the idea of not having a full rules set was considered at one point, but someone at GW finally realized (and I quote as it was related to me) "that it would be madness not to include a rule book". Unfortunately, the good news that they decided to include a full rule book in the Black Reach set has not overtaken the rumor about a partial book in all corners of the hobby yet. Hopefully, this page here on BOLS will help further spread the good news.
Happy Independence Day. I'll be celebrating the day at the local Battle Bunker working on my Eldar and Thousand Sons projects and playing in the mini-game events they have going on all day. Only a week till the 5th Edition 40K Midnight Madness launch!
Awesome, they are actually putting it in there!
That means I probably will buy from this edition, instead of getting out of 40k.
i didn't read the rest of the posts, so sorry if i doubled...
i'm holding the german full rulebook in my hands and there a full set of rules in black reach is also mentioned... so it's kind of secure ;)
btw.: i can recomend everyone to buy the full rulebook... it's just great... much fluff, much hobby stuff... great pictures and ideas... respect for that, GW ;)
Hallelujah! Praise the Emporer and pass the termies thats awesome news! =D
