SNEAK PEAK: Space Marine Spearhead

Info brought to the community by Warseer's: Jenage

Hey guys, here is some work on the upcoming Space Marine Spearhead (in the UK at least).

The Spearhead will be available for order August 9th and will be released on September 20th. Price: 141 pounds

Contents

  • Drop pod

  • Scout bikers (x3)

  • Thunderfire gun + Servitor

  • Sgt Chronus

  • Sgt Tellion

  • Pedro Cantor

  • Captain Sicarus

  • Vanguard Veterans boxed set (5 models)

  • Sterguard Veterans boxed set (5 models)

  • Codex: Space Marines

Also mentioned was the release of other chapters shoulder pads. Chapters mentioned were: Genesis, Mentors, Aurora, and Praetors of Orpheus.

It is also said that the limited edtion model that you can only get online in America at the moment is coming to the UK when GW launches the new website over there and will be given away when you sign up for a online account. A purchase will probably be needed.

~Thats a pretty interesting set of minis there and as usual, remember the goal of the Spearhead boxes is to get all the new MINIS into the hands of the collectors as soon as possible. They are not designed as balanced armies.

that's great! I was planning on getting all of them anyway (save Cantor). Wonder how much money this saves over getting each individually

Garrett said...

usually the savings are pretty small compared to their other boxed deals ($5-15 or so) the real perk they're selling is getting them all early

Limited edition model? I've looked over the US website but couldn't find it. Their site is so poorly laid out I find it difficult to locate anything.

there are no savings (apart from £2 on the codex) witht he spearhead boxes, the whole idea is just to get a load of the new stuff early.

First ive seen of this, we never get told till probably 3-5 weeks before the release.

Confused. Why put a Crimson Fists character (Cantor) in the same box as the named UM ones? Unless we can use either as proxies for the other chapter?
As in, paint Chronus in IF yellow and say he's a similar character for the Fists?

Thats what I was planning to do :-)

Sicarius is getting the Dremel treatmenmt followed up with some sculpted Mantis Warrior logos :-)

I'll be getting that limited edition web model soon!

Seriously?

18 Infantry Models
1 Artillery Piece
1 Vehicle
Codex: Space Marines

For $141 BGP?

The last Spearhead (Demons) had..
10 Bloodletters of Khorne,
10 Daemonettes of Slaanesh
5 Flesh Hounds of Khorne
1 Bloodcrusher of Khorne
1 Beast of Nurgle
1 Fiend of Slaanesh
1 Soul Grinder
Epidemius
Karanak
Skulltaker
The Masque
Codex Demons

For $270 US. Which i can onyl assume is clost to the US price of the Space Marine one.

The Space Marine one seems WAY to expensive compared to the demon one.

I have to agreed with Anon, that seems really expensive for what is in the box. Don't get me wrong I can't wait to see the models, but that seems a little steep.

Even anon is too kind. "WTF?!11!!1?" is more along the lines of what I was thinking. Let's just put me down for "no friggin way am I getting involved in those minis at that price level." Honestly you Space Marine collectors seem like a bunch of suckers. Maybe it's just that brits are all too kind and yanks are all too broke what with our kiddie play money value these days.

It sounds about right to me.
ESTIMATED costs below:
# Drop pod
$50 AUS
# Scout bikers (x3)
$50 AUS
# Thunderfire gun + Servitor
$40 AUS
# Sgt Chronus
$25 AUS
# Sgt Tellion
$25 AUS
# Pedro Cantor
$25 AUS
# Captain Sicarus
$25 AUS
# Vanguard Veterans boxed set (5 models)
$55 AUS
# Sterguard Veterans boxed set (5 models)
$55 AUS
# Codex: Space Marines
$38 AUS

$388 AUS Total roughly.
There is a hell of a lot of lead in there.

I agree with anon @ 7:02. In US money, it's roughly $280 for the SM spearhead that has about a quarter of what the Daemons spearhead had for nearly the same price. No way.

Something tells me the price wont be a direct pound-to-sterling exchange. It never is, and usually they err in favor of the dollar.

It also strongly suggests that the people that are getting this are in a big hurry to put stuff to use. Otherwise with the staggered release, they might not have them in time!

Key note here is the sarcasm. Still... I'd buy it

1) US Website Promotional Model:
The US website promotional Space Marine model offer does not currently show openly all of the time on the GW US website like it did the first week it was offered, but the first time you purchase $100 or more from the site, it will still automatically add the limited edition Space Marine model to your shopping cart.

I jumped on this limited time offer as soon as it appeared and it's a great looking miniature. The offer is "while supplies last" so you may not want to wait too much longer.

2) Space Marine Spearhead:
As for the price of the Spearhead, here's how this Space Marine Spearhead could actually come out to an estimated $270 or so in US dollars based on prices of similar current items.

What I've done below is just estimate based on similar items and current pricing, there is no specific advance knowledge of the upcoming prices of these items.

Also note that most of the items in this Spearhead are metal, not plastic, and most are special elite-types, not basic troops. Both factors affect price. Only the Drop Pod and perhaps the Scout Bikers will be plastic.

Drop pod $35
Scout bikers (x3) $35
Thunderfire gun + Servitor $30
Sgt Chronus $17
Sgt Tellion $17
Pedro Cantor $20
Captain Sicarius $20
Vanguard Veterans boxed set (5 models) $40
Sterguard Veterans boxed set (5 models) $40
Codex: Space Marines $22

Estimated total price $276 US

Even if the Veterans are $5 more or less than my guess above and some of the special characters are a price band higher or lower than my guesses here, the final price of the set will still be close to $270 give or take a few dollars, which is in line with its rumoured 141 pounds in the UK.

In spite of the price, I'd really like to have one of everything in this set and I'm hoping to get one of these Spearhead sets rather than buy each item piecemeal. Hopefully there will be a price break, even if it's just around $25 or so, on buying the set over buying each item separately that will help move the set quickly to the benefit of both GW and Space Marine model collectors.

Anyone have a link to what the limited edition space marine looks like?

As a Blood Angels' player, I won't purchase the box. I'll just buy 10 veterans with jump packs, do some conversion work on those, and throw them into battle as hard hitting BA assault forces. =)

I guess Pedro Cantor will soon be worth less than the US dollar on eBay.

Seriously, why put special characters for different armies in the same box.

Just to let you folks know the model shown above is the Limited Edition Model. I'm just not so sure I like it, seems a little 80'sish to me. But thats my problem not the models or the makers.

Niall Kearney said...

I can see Sgt Chronus being a bit more expensive than the standard models since he'd be two. One on foot and one in a vechile. Or would they just give you one in the spearhead?

Sicarius looks like a nightmare to grind away the ultra symbols, that sword and helmet crest....

nosuchmethod said...

Keep in mind, as mentioned above guys, there is usually no real savings to buying a spearhead, you just get the models 2-4 weeks before wide release.

It also usually includes the pewters, which never appear in the reg/army boxes anymore (they started dropping metal entirely from the army boxes sometime around 7th ed WHF).

I'm becoming very bullish on Aurora, what with a new codex & shoulder pads & a role in the Macharian Crusade ....

Well, I received the Limited Edition Sergeant yesterday in the mail with my latest purchase. He is pretty freakin awesome! He may have to get paint on him sooner rather than later!

Also, if anyone is thinking they don't want the Pedro Cantor out of their spearhead, my Crimson Fists will take him!

Anonymous said...

With regard to Ultramarines and Fists characters being in the same box, I think its part of GW's 'no more themes' campaign, the effects of which can clearly be seen in the CSM codex (no more legion specific rules for example). The SM codex will probably include some kind of mixing chapters thing like CSM's Renegades, or will emphasise the fact that you can just rename characters to fit in your army, as they're psrt of the main army list now.

>> "Anyone have a link to what the limited edition space marine looks like?"

Assuming this question was not meant to be facetious, the picture of the limited edition Space Marine is shown at the top of this BOLS web page, the one on which the question and this answer were posted.

>> "Seriously, why put special characters for different armies in the same box."

Some people like to collect cool looking character models regardless of specific chapter. Such models can also can be used as "regular" characters, painted just for fun, or renamed in "counts as" armies that are painted differently than the GW examples but which use the rules for a specific chapter. As a last resort, there's always the option to trade or sell the odd model that doesn't fit in with one's schemes. Frankly, I'm not sure what I'll personally do with such character models yet, but they are a small part of the set and they look good enough that I won't mind having them even if I decide not to do a chapter that can use all of them in games. They look great.

Dam GW for making this so easy for me to get all these models.

metal veterans again? ugh

The new Land Raider Redeemer kit will also be in the Spearhead.

Also don't forget the new SM dex is somewhere between 150 and 200 pages. Quite a bit bigger than typical Codex.

The LIMITED EDITION SPACE MARINE offer is again showing openly on the US website under the "Games Workshop Features" tab on the site's home page.

Here's a link directly to the page with full details of the Web Exclusive Space Marine Sergeant offer:

Many players do this, the rules don't say "Marneus Calgar may only be used in an all blue army of 1500+ pts." In fact, I went so far as to use the Chaos Space Marine list for my Loyalist Blue Dragons. The way the models are presented do not matter, nor does the actual model used, only the rules matter.

Well, that's how I see it.

Even though it will never, ever happen. Wouldn't plastic AND metal versions for the same figs be AWESOME.

Anonymous said...

why would that be awesome?

Cirative said...

@ Ian Taylor

Actually, the current codex DOES say, "Marneus Calgar may be used in an Ultramarines force of 1,500 points."

Same with all other special characters.

Oh goody, another overpriced army set.

As for anyone who doesn't know what the limited edition model looks like, it's just the space marine on this page.
