Posted by bigred | Tuesday, August 19, 2008 | , | 62 comments »

You know what I really like to see? Crazed enthusiasm! And I haven't seen anything like this in a while. THQ is working on a Rhino. Not a model; but a real-life full-sized operational Rhino.

And the best part is they are letting us see their progress as they construct the beast. It is slated to make an appearance at Games Day UK 2008.

So head on over and check out their press release and Flickr photos. We will keeping tabs on this one as project as it works its way through to completion.

~I guess we will finally get to discover the answer to the ages old question of how many marines can actually fit in a Rhino. :)

Now hopefully we will see what colour they will paint it. Hopefully not blue!

  2. Anonymous // August 19, 2008 12:07 PM

    "a real-life full-sized operational Rhino."

It's still going to be too small.

  3. Anonymous // August 19, 2008 12:07 PM

    Hopefully not blue? LOL.

I don't think it will hold 10 SM marines or 5 Termies.

  4. Anonymous // August 19, 2008 12:08 PM

naw, its to small, and doesn't look sci fi enough. they're wasting they're time.

    >>naw, its to small, and doesn't look sci fi enough. they're wasting they're time.

    >>

Oh please. You go out and do something better.

No? Didn't think so. Its not your Fething money.

  6. Michael // August 19, 2008 12:12 PM

They will paint it marroon and black for the Blood ravens.

  7. Gringo // August 19, 2008 12:14 PM

Scale be damned!!! These guys are making a working 'life' size Rhino.

That's all out lunacy and i applaud them for it. I for one would like to see more of this kind of obscure enthusiasm for the hobby.

Lastly, to Stad, i imagine that as it's THQ this will be a Blood Raven Rhino, so hopefully not blue. ;o)

  8. Forhekset // August 19, 2008 12:18 PM

Wow, now that's what I call PR! Awesome work THQ.

I'm sure it will look big enough when it smashes into the front of your house and disgorges a sqaud of angry space marines.

  9. Abhinav Jain // August 19, 2008 12:22 PM

    haha!!!
this is awesome!!! The photos are amazing!!
good work to the guys at THQ!!!
wish i cud go to GDUK08
as someone already mentioned, this is all-out crazyness and who the hell cares about scale?? if it was to be scaled then it would have to be 2-3 times the size it currently is!!!

  10. Anonymous // August 19, 2008 12:22 PM

I don't know what's more crazy, building a life-size Rhino, or building a life-size Rhino and then putting gaming rigs inside it!

I'm gunna go for the latter.

  11. Anonymous // August 19, 2008 12:27 PM

I want to see what the storm bolters & side access hatches will look like. Blood Raven color scheme is my bet.

  12. Anonymous // August 19, 2008 12:35 PM

That looks to me like an FV432, a UK equivalent of the US M113.

    Anaximander

  13. Lagduf // August 19, 2008 12:59 PM

Yes, they're using the FV432 at the basis of the Rhino. Nice eye there, I had to read the Press Release to figure out what vehicle they were modifying it to be.

Hopefully the guys they are contracting are as good as the guys at WETA. Did you see the Warthog they built? That was awesome.

  14. Anonymous // August 19, 2008 1:07 PM

Seeing the tank that is the base for it I think they will have problems making side access hatches work.

  15. Veahirin // August 19, 2008 1:09 PM

I don't get how some peopole can be harsh on such an ambitious project. Fluff crazed a little?

Anyhow, I wish I had the time/ technical know how to build one, that thing is awesome! Who wouldn't think its sweet?

  16. Keeper of the Fortress // August 19, 2008 1:12 PM

They will most likely pain it in Blood Ravens colors as its to celebrate DoW 2's release.

There doing great work since it is like they just started. The rear extension is coming along nicely and im sure they will figure out the side hatches. I wonder if GW will supply the paint heh.

  17. Anonymous // August 19, 2008 1:16 PM

wow, its great but i think it could be a chimera more than a rhino. i hope they do something like a basilisk or something. I still wish they could show the rhino at the u.s.

  18. Shaun // August 19, 2008 1:20 PM

I would like to see the reactions as it travels to GDUK!

  19. Anonymous // August 19, 2008 1:20 PM

Well I think they can make the side hatches work somehow but seeing the way the tracks go on the original tank and the WIP pictures ,they want work the way they do on a model.

  20. Anonymous // August 19, 2008 1:22 PM

this may not be related to the article, but i wish thq would make a different chapter besides blood ravens, like black templars or imperial fists. But I must say these guys are true gamers. (applause applause)

  21. Anonymous // August 19, 2008 1:54 PM

    1. Building a Rhino is one of the awesomest things I've ever heard of.

    2. I saw something else on the THQ site: the 4th race for DoW II. See a picture here:

  22. solidzaku // August 19, 2008 2:17 PM

Holy Astartes Batman! If that thing actually gets built, I'm going to blow off my college fund to see it.

  23. Catzilla // August 19, 2008 2:29 PM

I want them to paint it pink.

  24. Nork's Minis // August 19, 2008 2:32 PM

Awesome! Personally, I'm not a fan of the Blood Ravens, but it's obvious that that is how this 'little' project will be painted. Can't wait to see the storm bolter...

  25. Anonymous // August 19, 2008 2:35 PM

I hope they got the FV432 cheap, and Tanks-A-Lot are doing it for a song as fabricating a Rhino from scratch wouldn't be all that hard for a decent special effects shop.

The hardest part would be deciding on the frame and the powerplant, but the cosmetic details would be a lot easier to do from the start than trying to get another vehicle to shape.

  27. Seth // August 19, 2008 3:15 PM

    THQ FTW!

  28. Anonymous // August 19, 2008 3:31 PM

    Really Seth?

This is the publisher (not the developer though) of Saints Row 2: Giant Bag of Fail.

  29. Legion3000 // August 19, 2008 3:58 PM

I agree, it would be easier to build a rhino from scratch than modify an actual APC into a rhino. Cutting through all that hardened steel would be a nightmare! Not to mention the thing will weigh many tons. generally you can't even drive something like that on regular roads without tearing them up.

Anywhoo, it is seriously cool if they can do it. I wish them the best of luck.

  30. Anonymous // August 19, 2008 4:22 PM

    THAT IS EPIC

    -Sam

  31. Anonymous // August 19, 2008 4:23 PM

I'm reminded of the Warthog that Bungie made awhile back.

While it's most likely going to be a Blood Raven Rhino, being their flagship Chapter and all, I've never really understood why everyone has such a strong loathing for the Ultramarines. "Everyone plays them," is one I've heard a lot. That seems rather unfounded in my experience, as most people I've talked to have avoided playing them for that reason alone (so nobody's playing them because everyone is playing them, right...). Just another case of rallying against something (perceived as) popular? Looks that way to me.

  32. Anonymous // August 19, 2008 4:31 PM

yo you guys want me to get pictures or even video's of it

  33. Nurglespuss // August 19, 2008 6:10 PM

Ah yes, I was talking to the GDUK manager a week ago about this (with a colleague). It was meant to be used for playable demos of DOWII, with interior designed as such. However, as the demo won't be ready for the event this is now up in the air, and the rhinos final use is yet to be decided. Good news though, the large 2d space marines seen at GD Canada will be making an updated appearance (as playable game) at GDUK :> If any of you guys go to warhammer world, I recommend you talk to this chap, he has the right attitude for conversations between hobbyist and employee.

  34. Green Shoes // August 19, 2008 6:29 PM

Cool, now we can game with life-sized pieces! How long will it be until "Warhammer 40k: Embiggened!" comes down the pipe as an expansion?

Also, I thought they were doing this in Cali, not Britain-land? OR did I just misread something..?

  35. Chris // August 19, 2008 6:31 PM

I SOOOOOOOO wish they would bring that to the US. That is freakin awesome. Rhino FTW!!!!

  36. Anonymous // August 19, 2008 8:31 PM

Me and my pals will dress up as orks and "loot" it. hurr hurr hurr :D jkjk, really cool idea though,

    JUST NOT ULTRAMARINES!!!!!

make it like, imperial fists or sumthing

  37. Mayor Koenig // August 19, 2008 9:14 PM

    Nice !

BTW, some years ago I saw on the web some pics of a genius who actually had built the interior of an Rhino MkI inside the model (seats, etc...) where all 10 space marines fitted into the cargo space to prove that they actually could be transported (with the MkI it was a bit unbelievable)

  38. Anonymous // August 19, 2008 9:25 PM

    Metal boxes?

  39. Chris // August 19, 2008 9:27 PM

I don't know about you, But I'm not so worried about if i can fit 10 guys in it as much as if i can punch it from behind and get a glancing hit.

    Anyone?

  40. Noah Pepera-Rudd // August 19, 2008 9:31 PM

This is many kinds of rad.

    Sweetness.

  41. Anonymous // August 19, 2008 10:18 PM

    You a space marine, Chris?

  42. Anonymous // August 19, 2008 11:16 PM

The folks saying "not to scale" crack me up. Pretentious nerds, your tears are delicious.

  43. Anonymous // August 19, 2008 11:59 PM

With luck some local Orks will come a-callin some night and loot the bugger...the add a proppa amount of rivets to the beastie.
    LOL.

  44. Anonymous // August 20, 2008 2:10 AM

think they could have use a better light armoured veh then a FV432 would have done better with a M113A1 less mods to do and more room to do them for one thing the 113 has a ramp like a rhino while the FV432 has a swinging door

  45. Chris // August 20, 2008 7:12 AM

    @ anonymous 10:15PM
Not a space marine. Damn it. but someone out there has to be strong enough to take that thing on in hand to hand.

  46. Anonymous // August 20, 2008 7:59 AM

whats worse? a space marine fires a .75 caliber explosive tipped GRENADE which counts as s4? or that his punch is JUST AS STRONG.

  48. Chris // August 20, 2008 8:12 AM

Sam, I believe its the latter. ha. Thank you for catching the sarcasm.

  49. Anonymous // August 20, 2008 9:05 AM

Even though the FV432 is still supposedly in active service, I am sure they are far cheaper than a M113A1.

That and I can only imagine what the DOD export on a M113A1 is.

  50. Adam // August 20, 2008 2:23 PM

    1) This is awesome, and I wholly approve.

    2) Why does everyone hate the Ultras? I know about 3 people in my state who lays them, while I know about 4 Dark Angels, 2 Blood Angels, 1 Space Wolf, 1 Templar, and 2 DiY's. I think people are just jealous that we have a half-eldar Chief Librarian. :P

    3) Quit whining that the Rhino is going to be too small. They need to keep it at a reasonable scale and mass or else it won't work. It will be too heavy to drive and would burn out the engine trying, or shred the roads trying.

  51. Anonymous // August 20, 2008 4:16 PM

rhino? rhino! , i want to see a full sized working land rader crusader. lol

  52. Crazy Legs Hinch // August 20, 2008 6:12 PM

I'm sure I'm not the only one around here that would pay a whole ton of money to be allowed to drive it.

Mmm. Driving a Rhino. The geek-cred alone would be worth it!

  53. Anonymous // August 20, 2008 7:09 PM

I bet they're gonna put this in that life size 40k battle they're having at games day uk. anyone hear about that? its got life size marines and orks made of card. pretty intense.

  54. Anonymous // August 20, 2008 7:28 PM

why do people hate ultramarines gawd i could write a book about that!

  56. Sam Guss // August 20, 2008 8:57 PM

It will probably be Blood Ravens, because it is being made by THQ.

I had an idea to make a Thunder Hammer, with electricity going around the head, and then i decided not to.

I am going to make one, it just won't be electric. But it will be full size and weight, masterly crafted with a metal shaft/handle, not just a wood dowel spray-painted silver.

And i second Catzilla. If they were really badass they would paint it pink.

  57. Anonymous // August 21, 2008 4:11 AM

It would probably be easier to make a chimera but still this is awesome,

-please no tblue if it is blue and ultramarine i will personally go to england or wherever it is and plant C4 on it and blow it up, or i will go and pour paint all over it and the people who painted it!!!!

    awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  58. Nurglespuss // August 21, 2008 11:23 AM

    @ Anonymous 7:09 PM

As I said earlier, the rhino was going to be used to house playable demos of DOWII, but will now prob just feature the trailers.

The giant cardboard cutout game contains only tactical marines and chaos marines, with giant dice.

  59. Anonymous // August 21, 2008 2:08 PM

really, nurglepuss? well, check out this link. its space marines vs. orks in the uk games day.

  60. Nurglespuss // August 22, 2008 3:07 AM

Yes really, we got taken in the back room and shown that cutout. I was told marines v chaos. Orks makes more sense but there you are. Point still stands though, rhino not a part of it.

    IMHO

    Looking very good.

  62. Anonymous // December 7, 2008 5:51 AM

Looks awesome. side hatches wont work as the 432 aint built like that, the fuel tanks are there. Kudos th them but i aint doing the track-bashing on that thing.
