Deep Thought: Minis – How Old is Too Old?

2 Minute Read
Oct 26 2010

So I have a tough one for all of us painters.  Each of us no matter how quickly or slowly we painted our miniatures has invested a portion of our personal time and soul into them.  But eventually the day comes when our collection is starting to show its age…  Then what?

I started collecting Warhammer 40k miniatures in the late 80s (don’t even get me started on the Star Fleet Battles and Battletech minis that came before).  Now you can tell with several of my latest armies that I’ve kept up with the times and thrown in some totally modern ones like the Death Guard, and my Fantasy Dark Elves.

we’ve been riding since Margaret Thatcher was in office

But for some, like my Rogue Trader Imperial Guard, I think their best days are behind them.  Heck I have a real problem even taking my 20+ year old RTB-1 Blood Angels out on the tableop – and they have a good codex.  At some point for me, its just time to leave the models as a testiment to my painting, and let them slowly fade away to be replaced by newer versions.

My questions is what do you guys think of putting older but fully painted minis out to pasture?  What’s the expiration date for you all?  Do your old soldiers indeed never die, or do you always try to stay up to date with the latest versions of your army, dumping the old tired minis on friends or ebay?
