Hey everyone, CrazyRedPraetorian here. This week I have a story of how I ended up playing one of my favorite armies, Space Wolves.

As some of you may know, I used to own some comic and game stores. Those stores started out  oriented primarily towards comics, sports cards, and toys. I also carried Magic and Star Wars CCGs. As my operation started to expand I carried more and more gaming products. D&D 3rd ed had just launched and I commented on it’s sales in a trade publication. A Games Workshop rep saw this and contacted me. At that time, I knew next to nothing about GW or their products. At first I declined their offer but, the GW rep was persistent. Eventually, they made an offer that I couldn’t refuse. In addition to some decent terms they were also going to send me an army to assemble, paint, and learn how to  play. When they asked what army I would like I asked if the SWs were popular. I was told that they were very popular. Now, I was not wanting to play the same army as many of my customers for business reasons. So, I asked my rep what were the least popular armies. He told me Dark Eldar and IG, this was at the very beginning of 3rd Ed. So, my first army was IG.

But, the Wolves were calling. Every time that I looked at the wall, I thought about building a Space Wolves army. One day while placing a rather large Christmas order, my GW rep asked me if I was considering a different army, yet. I told him my eye was on the Wolves. When my order arrived there were two extra Space Wolf battle force boxes, and that was the start of my Space Wolf army. I went right to work on them and in no time I had a respectable force with some kind of conversion on every model. I was hooked – the Wolves saw more table time than my other armies put together.

Shortly after closing my last store all of my armies were stolen. Four cases of figures and one transport case were gone. All that was left were an Army Transport full of IG vehicles, a SW Leman Russ Exterminator, and a box full of Praetorian blisters(that is another story).

When I evacuated to Austin because of Hurricane Ike, I met the BoLS crew and really got the bug to play again. I bought the 5th Ed book, painted up some Praetorians and started playing again. While digging through storage I found an old Space Marine army that I used for demos at my stores. It was a hideously painted loaner army that I had pieced together from customers. I had completely forgotten about this army. The gears in my head started turning and I started converting these multi-colored Smurfs into Space Wolves. My original plan was a budget build. Well, that didn’t work out exactly as planned. I had a few together when the new codex came out and I started to play them right away. I loved the new codex!

Eventually, I had enough painted to use in tournaments and the Praetorians were mothballed for a while. Like my first Space Wolf army just about every model has some kind of conversion on it. I have used more green stuff this go round, most of the shoulder pads have been altered and the heads have had hair and beards sculpted. The army is far from finished and has been a complete joy paint and build.  And so here I sit years later, still playing my beloved Space Wolves, even the face of hell, theft, and literally high water.

What is your favorite army? Do you have any unusual stories about it? If so, post it up! I’d like to read about it. Thanks for reading……….
