Best of BoLS returns with more of your models

Doc; Afternoon, morning or evening (time zone dependant) to you all! Its time for another riveting look through the best the BoLS lounge can throw at us!

Shades; Hello again BoLSers. Once again me and the Doc have been delving into the very guts of the Miniatures, Hobby and Project Lounge to find some of the most beautiful, horrifying or otherwise intriguing models YOU GUYS are sharing with the world wide webz. To be honest, we never stop delving; it’s just difficult to remind ourselves to come back up for air and to type these articles sometimes!

Doc; To celebrate the Hobbit launch I figured I’d celebrate with a LotR model. This wonderful Isengard Troll was produced by ddsa86.

With some much metal work on the model it is important to make it stand out and not use a flat Boltgun metal on it (Sorry…Leadbelcher. Stupid new paint names…). For this reason the tarnished effect and edge highlighting on the metal plates help make the model really stand out from the crowd.

Shades; On big models like this one, it is really easy for the details to disappear into the scale, but ddsa86’s simple colour scheme has really allowed them to stand out without having to over highlight the model to compensate for spot colours, keeping the darker, grittier and downright grimier look that really compliments the brutality of the model.

Whilst sticking with our theme, here is something completely different, JayCops Saruman

JayCorps’s thread is absolutely crammed full of Middle Earthy goodness, so I strongly suggest you check it out. One of the things I like most about this model is the staff. It is unmistakably black, but highlighted to such a glossy looking level that it doesn’t stand out jarringly against the rest of the model. Anyone who has painted black like this will tell you it isn’t an easy technique to get right, but here it has been done exquisitely. The shading in the robes and hair also helps to accentuate the gloss effect with all the highlights looking like they are coming from the same light source. While it seems an obvious thing to do, all too often you see models where the painter has got it just slightly wrong, just breaking the realism of the piece.

Doc; Although the robes aren’t quite as white as I would do them, it helps break the model up and not just be pure white. The slightly grubby robes help the white of the sash and beard stand out. Then the detail on the face just helps finish the model off.
That’s enough Hobbit stuff for now hopefully we’ll see lots of new dwarves in the near future. Lets face it they’re so nice you don’t even need to play the game to appreciate them.
Chaos is still flavour of the month round my parts so lets move from Hobbits to giant machines of the chaos gods. I’ve been watching Sprugly’s Brass Scorpion for a while. Its been slowly building, which given the amount of freehand on it is not surprising.

That marine feels a touch inadequate I’m sure. As I already mentioned the freehand on the panels is wonderful and helps make those large panels stand out.
Shades; I’ve said it before and I’m sure I will say it again; the base really does make the model. Don’t get me wrong, Sprugly’s freehand lava patterns on the armour panels and the highlighting on the metallics is exceptional, but the contrast of the fiery reds and the cool blue stone blocks is what really makes the model pop!
For our last pick, I’ve gone all the way back to September 2009 to find Morat’s Epic Lamenters.
Now, admittedly these guys are a side note on his Eldar thread, but this kind of detail on Epic scale miniatures deserves to be noted. Heck, I’ve seen less detailed 40k Rhinos. Sure these models look lumpy and kind of goofy compared to modern GW miniatures, but that doesn’t detract from the paint jobs at all (most of which I can only assume were painted using individual human eye-lashes as paint brushes!)
Doc; The detail on these things can’t be stated enough. Each of those marines is barely a cm tall and the’ve got full highlights, shoulder heraldry and detailing. I can’t imagine how steady your hand would need to be to do that. Then the freehand on the rhino! That emblem on the doors is likely only a few mm tall. And don’t even get me started on the freehand check pattern. That is simply incredible.
Shades; So that is, once again, good night/day from us (depending on your timezone). As always we hope you’ve enjoyed our little expedition, now it is time for you to go to M,H&P , check out the threads we have highlighted and find some other gems that are down there! Remember, we are always looking for more stuff and all the content is provided by you guys, so get posting your personal hobby adventures for us all to share in!
Doc; Yep, with the cold christmas nights setting in (or…if Australian the warm christmas nights) its the perfect opportunity to settle down with some models and put paint to brush and brush to model. It might be harder to get nice photos, but keep trying we want to see your artwork!
Bigred Here:  I wanted to invite you all to a special request.  Its December, and the holidays are fast approaching.  I truly feel that the beating heart of any gaming community isn’t the tactics guys smashing face (as much as we love them), but the diligent hobbyists painting and converting away – alone in thousands of cozy painting desks around the world.
Please take this as a warm holiday request my friends.  When next you sit down at your hobby desk, take a camera, or even your smart phone with you.  Take some shots and share your next December project with the community.  Let’s all share some of our holiday hobby with the community.  Post your stuff right here.  Thanks Everybody!
