Welcome to another “This Week in 40K Podcasting,”

Here is this week’s top 5!

Highlights:  This week the crew was joined by a live studio audience for their Christmas show!  They opened up with the News where they discussed some local announcements and the latest from GW.  Next the boys covered what they have been doing lately in gaming and the hobby.  Then, the guys move on to a discussion about the best methods of saving money in the hobby.  This included raiding the old bits box to make more out of what you have received for Christmas and making them into what you want.  They also discussed magnetizing your models to expand your army by having models that fill multiple roles, raiding the eBay market, and some third party options available out there.  In the next segment, the boys decided to do a Q&A section where they answered question from their fans and the audience.  This included question like what makes a good combat patrol IG list, the proper way to flip a table, sound effects in game, and much more!  They closed out the show with a ‘Dear Dagmire’ segment, where Dagmire answered some rather interesting questions from the fans.

Opinion:  I love shows like this one, and the Overlords have a few like it under their belt.  This show was really more of a celebration rather than a straight forward podcast.  They crew was able to kick back and have a lot of fun recording a show.  This one was loaded with laughs and was really quite enjoyable to listen to.  Easily this was my top show for the week.  Happy Holidays guys!

Second Founding – Episode 19

Highlights:  This week the guys opened up the show with a thin announcement section before they talked about the games they have been playing lately.  Next, the boys had part one of an interview with Bruce Woods, David Thompson, and Mark.  They are all old Games Workshop Outriders.  They first covered briefly how they got into the hobby and what games they are currently playing now.  They then began a discussion about what it was like to be an Outrider for Games Workshop, including what the program was all about, how it worked with the old compensation project, and much more.  They also discussed the evolution of the game under the Outrider program.  They also shared their thoughts on what their favorite parts of being an Outrider were along with some of their old war stories from back in those days.  In their next segment, the boys then shifted the conversation to what has changed since the Outrider program was canceled, including shortened Gamesdays, the Bits Wagon going away, and how the games and company changed.

Opinion:  This was a truly fascinating show to me.  I had of course heard of the Outriders and for the life of me I cannot figure out why GW canceled that program and its successor the Kommandos (of which I was a part of while it was there).  To me a program such as is this was where the hobby was best promoted and supported, and now it is gone.  I was really quite intrigued to hear what it was like back in those days, and the wealth of knowledge these three veterans drop on us in this show was priceless.  A great show and I eagerly await part two!

Highlights:  This week Steve makes a rare appearance, and Reece from the Frontline Gaming crew also joins the show.  They open up the show with some reviews of the games they have been playing in the past week.  This included Reece discussing the Bay Area Open 2013 and what it takes to run a game store!  Next, in ‘Pat’s Corner’ Pat talked to Goatboy about the CSM/Daemons army he took to the Feast of Blades.  This included some great tactical evaluations of the new CSM codex!  Up next, the boys continued their conversation about ‘List Building Philosophy’ in 6thedition.  This included the guys talking about the lists they themselves are building and the reasons why they are using certain units.  Blackmoor is a fan of finding units you like and build the list around them; Reese shot more for the well rounded list with a list of criteria to fill.  Neil also put forward the idea of building to a match up and looking at the top lists and how to fill multiple roles.  Next, Pat talked to Jeff from the SCARAB convention about their upcoming Apocalypse event.  The guys closed out the show as they usually do with questions from their fans.

Opinion:  Each and every week the guys fill my head full of 40K knowledge, and this show did not disappoint!  It was great to hear from Reese and Steve, as well as Goatboy and his thoughts on the CSM Codex.  And as the meta of 6th is beginning to emerge, the advice handed out in this show for simple list building was quite useful.  And the Q&A segment has really become the icing in the cake to each show.  Overall a great show guys!

Preferred Enemies – Episode 42 ***Explicit***

Highlights:  The guys are back with another list building show, this week dedicated to Codex Eldar.  The boys opened up the show with the latest releases from GW, including the Walls of Martyr and the Campaign of Fire book.  The move on to their main segment, which they called ‘Life at the Lower Tiers’, and this week they discussed the Eldar Army.  This opened up with a conversation on what the higher tiered armies are and which armies have dropped down to the lower tiers due to age and edition change.  They then moved on to talk about the strengths of the Eldar army, including the best Psychic defense in the game and Eldrad, and the key weaknesses to this army.  They then moved on to a brief unit-by-unit look at the codex and discussed what is and is not still effective in this old codex, including adding in Allies to fill in holes in the army.  Next they went on to build their 1500 point list, starting with their HQ choices and moving through each of the Force Organization chart.  They then debated each choice in the army, deciding what is best for their list, and build to their goal of 1500 point.  They closed out the show by discussing their latest hobby progress.

Opinion:  I have to say that I am really enjoying these list building shows from the guys.  It is not so much a review of the codex but rather a how-to for that particular army.  They did a really good job describing why they selected each unit and took the effort to not spam units.  This was a good one, thanks guys!

Life After the Cover Save – Episode 59 ***Explicit***

Highlights:  This week the Thunderdome Survivor Series rolls on as Lancaster Longhair takes on Campos for the championship belt!  The boys opened up the show with their usual banter before they talk to the participants in the Thunderdome Battle.  They first spoke to ‘Longhair’ who brought Space Wolves with Imperial Guard allies.  He ran down the list he brought and the tactics he will try to pull off to win the game.  Next, they talked to Campos and the Eldar list he is brought to the event. In the next segment, Col. Drakus joined the boys as they returned to the Battleforce Breakdown!  This week they reviewed the Dark Vengeance box set, looking only at the Chaos Space Marines half of it.  They cover all of the units found in the box, the minimum and amount of points you can squeeze out of the units found in this set.  They then cover the overall value of what you are getting for your $50 and how some of the units function in the new codex.  Next, the guys talked to the participants of the Survivor Series mid game to discuss how it is going and what the outcome looks like it will be.  Then Blake, Ed, and Drakus all kicked around some ideas that GW might want to consider, such as an Allies Book, allowing Tyranids to ally with themselves, a Fortification Book/Model release, and much more!  They close out the show with the finale of the Survivor Series game and its results.

Opinion:  Back with a vengeance was the Battleforce Breakdown!  I love this segment, it is absolutely essential to check these all out from this and their previous shows.  It really gives you a great idea of what it is you are really getting for the money you pay for a Battleforce.  They followed it up with some very interesting ideas for GW, some of which I think would make great additions to the hobby.  Great show guys!

Special Note:
Signals from the Frontline ***Explicit***

Highlights: Crusade of Fire, Ork rumors, Lord Inquisitor, List Reviews, new GW video games, Organized Tournament play, and much more!

Opinion:  I really felt the need to point out Episode 108 released on December 11th.  Reese proposed what I consider to be the single best, fairest way to score rankings in 40K.  It is my sincerest hope that his plans come to be on the West Coast and that it spreads like wildfire throughout the country!  Please support him by checking out this show and spreading the word on this scoring system.  Reese, I applaud you and the Frontline Gaming and wish the best for you on this front!
