The End is Nigh – Where Did Finecast Go?

Something funny caught my eye with the Space Marine and now Dark Elves releases – where’s the Finecast?

Now believe me when I say that I do enjoy Finecast.  While I have a soft spot for the heft of a good metal model, seeing a metal Bloodthirster tip off the table, and shatter into a dozen pieces on a concrete floor mid-game can bring a tear to anyone’s eye.

I DO enjoy Finecast…
I love it for its easy of conversion.
I love it for it’s low weight
I love it for it’s damage resistance under normal dropping and handling incidents.

That said – I love plastic WAY MORE.

So while I love Finecast I won’t shed a tear when it goes the way of the Dodo.

And I’m wondering if we have reached the tipping point.

Did you notice the lack of Finecast new models with BOTH the Space Marines and Dark Elves ranges.

I’m going to assume that GW has finally mastered the art of cranking out the smaller clamshell plastic miniatures like we see with the new Marine Captain/Libby/Chaplain.

Now GW has been getting these mini-plastic kits out for a while.  I remember scratching my head when this guy showed up kind of out of nowhere. Remember him?

The total number of these clampack models is on the rise, and it looks like they are filling the niche of generic HQs that the armies all have.

So I guess is looks like while the ICs aren’t going anywhere and are still Finecast for now, GW may have reached the end of sculpting new models in resin, and is now embarking on a course that will eventually see them all phased out and replaced with plastic one day.

I for one can’t wait.

How about you – Finecast – is it past it’s prime or still kicking?
