Welcome to another installment of “This Week in 40K Podcasting,”  Here is this week’s top 5!

The Overlords – Episode 160 ***Explicit***

Highlights:  This week the guys are back fresh from the awesomeness of Haven!  They are joined by Ciaran and they kicked off the show with the news, including the latest from Forgeworld and their 30K line.  They then moved on to their local news where they discussed a new contest, and what they have been up to lately in the hobby and gaming.  This included a lot of Haven preparations, games played, and lots of fun!  In their next segment, the guys did a ‘Good, Bad, and the Ugly’ of the Officio Assassinorum Dataslate.  This included reviews of the deep background story of the Officio Assassinorum, how Assassins are chosen, and the different branches and how they are used.  They also discussed the ‘on the battlefield’ assassins like the Vindicare, Callidus, Eversor, and the Culexus, the fluff behind them, and the rules that now govern them.  Next, the boys dove into all of the awesomeness that was Haven!  First this discussed the massive turn out, the ‘Bring and Buy’, and the massive games that took place there after!  They discussed the great terrain there, the different themed tabled like the Sewer table, and some of the amazing games that took place there from all sizes of 40K games, including Apocalypse level games.  They moved on to the main table from the event, the ‘Battle for Haven’ table, a 12’ X 4’ huge City Fight terrain piece, and they discussed all of the craziness that took place on this table and how the course of the battle went.

Opinion:  This event sounded epic, and it is something like this that would easily be able to remind folks just how awesome this game it.  I am often jealous of the experience that those overseas have in comparison to here in the US, as we really do have two entirely different environments in which we play.  Their club has always been amazing and this event sounded like a blast!  My top spot just for pure awesomeness!  Great work guys!

The Heroic 28s – Episode 103

Highlights:  This week the boys are back from the NOVA Open 2014 and that is all they are talking about!  After a few announcements, the guys discussed what they have been up to lately in gaming and the hobby.  This included some ‘40K in 40 Minutes’ and some games played.  Next, the boys dove into a great topic of ‘competitive vs. narrative’ 40K, and how it seems the divide between these two types of players is getting wider and greater.  They discussed ideas on how they plan to ‘try’ to bring these two sides together and increase the attendance at events.  They talked about the value for the price of the game, how it compares to other games, and the gross imbalance between some of the armies.  Next, it was on to their review of the NOVA Open 2014!  They boys discussed getting to the event itself, all of the tournaments that were being held there including the GT and the Narrative, and the details behind Warlords event that the boys all participated in.  This just sounded awesome, and a lot of fun to play in, including the changes the NOVA staff made to create their own ‘supplements’ for armies, making them much more viable.  They discussed how my fun it was and how un-fun the GT looked in comparison and discussed some of their game from the weekend.  They also discussed some really bad service at a restaurant after all of the festivities and the award ceremony.

Opinion:  So, in case you didn’t know, the NOVA Open was awesome this year!  I am really sorry that could not attend, for multiple reasons, but the fellowship between my fellow gamers in a celebration of all that is miniature war gaming sounds like it was really an experience.  The guys did a great job covering the Narrative aspect of this event and I cannot recommend it enough.  Great show guys!

Jaded Gamercast – Episode 193 ***Explicit***

Highlights:  This week the boys continued they coverage of the new Grey Knight codex with some list building ideas!  They opened up the show with what they have been doing lately in gaming and the hobby.  Then it was on to ‘Model of the Week’ where the boys looked at the Planetfall starter set, ground combat in the Firestorm Armada universe, and some of the models in the starter.  They then moved on to their ‘Weekly Listener Poll’, and Sisters of Battle won the vote!  It was then on to the second part of their review of the Grey Knights Codex, the list building segment.  They cover over again how they felt that there was so very little effort put into this book.  Lange started with his list that had a standard Force Org with very little variation in the list, a lot of big point level units.  Nathan also took an older edition thought process when making his list with a deep striking theme.  They then discussed their overall thoughts on the book and how this Codex really feels like an ‘Allies’ Codex and not really a full blown, stand alone codex.
Opinion:  As these new Codices keep rolling off of the GW assembly line, so do the great reviews from the guys.  Now, this particular list building show was a bit thinner than those of the past, but so was the Codex so I am not sure that was entirely the boys fault.  Overall, I really enjoyed hearing the guys thoughts on the, well, codex.
Preferred Enemies – Episode 84 ***Explicit***

Highlights:  This week the guys dive into the fighting in close quarters and the Zone Mortalis rules from Forgeworld!  They opened up with the news and the new release of Space Hulk!  They then moved on to some of the rumors for the Dark Eldar, the Inquisition, and more.  They moved on to their main topic, where they discussed the Zone Mortalis rules.  These are free to download from Frogeworld, and the idea of playing in cramped quarters and how the rules restrict what you can take.  They then discussed the rules for building forces in Zone Mortalis, which included the FOC restrictions, the restriction on transports and vehicles in general, and the detachments available.  They then move on to discuss the rules for the board itself, the halls, the doors, how difficult it is for non-infantry to move in these tight quarters, and much more.  They also discussed some of the specific missions found in these rules and how the games they played turned out.  They then discussed some of the units they will use next time, now that they have some experience with the rules.    Next, the guys rolled into a review of Imperial Armour IV: The Anphelion Project Second Edition.  They looked at the book itself, some of the background story behind it, and the models found in this book, including the new Dimachaeron!  They go muc deeper into some of the cool rules for the units, including the massive Bio Titan of the Hierophant, the Stone-crusher Carnifex, and the Malethrope!  They also covered those famous Elysian Drop Troops!  They then moved on to discuss the campaign found in this book and some of the missions and how they fit together.  They closed out the show with an update on their hobby progress.

Opinion:  This week’s show had two really good reviews all jammed into the same show.  First, the review on the Zone Mortalis rules was great.  This is one of those aspects of 40K I have never really played with much, and after hearing this I need to correct.  They did a great review of the rules and more importantly, how much fun their games were.  The IA 4 review was also quite fascinating.  Great work gang!

The Independent Characters – Episode 109

Highlights:  This week, Carl, Adan, and Justin discussed raising children in the gaming environment!  They kicked off the show with the ‘Work Bench’ where they discussed what they have been up to lately in the hobby and gaming.  This included some tips about not watching movies while you paint and some great games played!  It was then on to their main topic of the show, ‘From Diapers to Dice Bags’ or what it is like raising children and balancing that with gaming.  They started with what changes a new baby brings to a family and how this can collide with gaming and how this also leads to some team work and task sharing skills that you may need to develop.  They also discussed some safety concerns you need to take into account as well, and as they get older, how to include your kids in on your hobby and gaming.  This included taking your kids to the big Cons and Tournaments and how this can work out.  This moved into an interview with ‘SRM’ and he discussed his life growing up in a gamer household.  Carl went on to interview his daughter and she talked about gaming with her dad, and Jake, who is Adan’s son.  They closed out the show by summing up what their thoughts are on having a family and a hobby life as well.

Opinion:  So this week’s show might not appeal to every gamer out there, especially those without children.  I, however, have four beautiful children and ALL of this hit home for me.  This show provided me ideas for balancing gaming (and podcasting) with all important family time, keeping a happy wife while you play with your plastic men/spaceships, and how to welcome my kids into the world of gaming.  IF you have children, or ever plan to, this one is a must.  Great work guys!
