WFB: Going Retro with Chaos Dwarfs – Part 3.

3 Minute Read
Nov 8 2014

Hi! I`m Tommy from the little known and rather obscure blog bigbossredskullz and we are making a Chaos Dwarfs army!

With the bases all wrapped up it’s time to look at another important feature and one that reinforces the retro look. Shield designs.
Orlygg with the brilliant blog Realms of Chaos has been one of my major sources of inspiration for this part and why I want it as a feature in my army.

Transfers
I never was a huge fan of transfers, opting for other simple solutions but with this army I’m striving to learn new techniques and improving my skills.

One of my favorite sources of inspiration comes from my White Dwarf collection (I miss the good old WD..). So I started looking in the first issue I own and lo and behold what I found!

WD 206 if you`re wondering.

JACKPOT!
So with the help of my cheap as chips printer I took a colour print on normal paper, it didn’t even turn out very good but that’s not a problem.
Note that it doesn’t matter what source you find so long as the size of the motif can be fitted on the shield.

What now you ask. Pick one and with a sharp knife cut it out like this.

Before you attach it apply chosen basecoat. Mine is black.
Dilute pva glue in water, apply on shield and then attach the transfer.
Now let this dry properly otherwise you’ll ruin your fine detail brush.
Painting It
Since this is retro, strong and varied colours is a must. So I’m thinking yellow for starters.
Three thin coats and it’s okay per now as long as it’s fairly even. Then hit the black and a fine detail brush and outline the transfer.
Paint the white parts white. Do this tidy so you won’t have to clean up to much afterwards.
To get a smoother finish on the yellow I use a yellow ink. Yellow wash or thinned out yellow works as well. The point here is using a wash in the same colour as your base.
A bit tidying along the edges and improving the detailing on the forehead with some thinned out black, a quick spray of dullcoat and it’s finished.

Here’s some more variants just to show the possibilities.
Sorry, no spoilers yet!

In addition, if you want to read about my first games with this army you can do so here and here (sneak peak of the BSB as well).

That’s it for part 3! Next time it’s finally time to check out the colour scheme I’ve chosen for my Chaos Dwarfs. Are you feeling the retro shield designs?
