Ad Mech Roundup

Ad Mech in 40K at last – someone pinch me!

  • Bahkara

Not quite sold on the walker but I’m in for the troops.

    • TimW

The walker looks pretty lame a la Taurox, Space Wolf Santa Claus.

      • Badgerboy1977

Both of which I actually like personally and the walker is definitely growing on me as well.

        • An_Enemy

If something has to “grow on you” then you’re forcing it and someone failed somewhere in the design process.

Fungus grows on you. Not $70+ models.

          • Badgerboy1977

That is categorically untrue, some of my most loved albums, art and architecture that I know have “grown on me” over the years rather than being an immediate ‘I love that’ vibe, it’s part of the very nature of aesthetic design and creative art.

          • An_Enemy

For something to grow on you your first response is necessarily “I don’t like it.”

When you’re dealing with an entirely visual medium like miniatures that leave pretty much nothing open to interpretation(unlike music or art) that’s a failure.

Its OK. I don’t think the CAD mash up of a Sentinel and a Defiler will cry because you immediately recognized how lazy the design is. It will, however, love that you learned to love the bomb in time.

          • Badgerboy1977

That is also completely untrue, you can just as easily start from the basis of ambivalence or simply liking something rather than it having to be a completely opposite viewpoint before it grows on you and becomes something you really love as a design, especially when the overall design is not clear in the way that a blurry, tightly cropped or poorly shot leaked pic can be.

          • An_Enemy

OK…so you weren’t sure about it and now you’ve decided you like it? That’s fine. Choose your words more carefully then. Especially when you’re chiming in as a response to someone else’s opinion.

          • Badgerboy1977

To be honest I felt I was pretty clear on it as I didn’t actually state whether I disliked or liked the walker at the beginning, it seems you’ve inferred that yourself and I haven’t actually “decided” anything yet and won’t until I see at least the 360 view or video of it.

Either way it doesn’t affect how you’re incorrect in your assessment of whether and how art can grow, or not, on you.

          • An_Enemy

Calling a toy soldier art is a bit of a stretch for me. I do recognize that you’re allowed to believe otherwise.

          • Badgerboy1977

“Art is a diverse range of human activities and the products of those activities, usually involving imaginative or technical skill.” Quick definition there for you.

Anything that requires creative input from cake decorating to music to product design and so on can be considered an artistic endeavour.

          • An_Enemy

Art is in the eye of the beholder. Using Webster’s is dumb. Do you think feces on a dry erase board constitutes art? It took imagination and effort to make though!

          • Badgerboy1977

That would be conceptual art, it’s not really my cup of tea in the main but it’s perfectly valid as an art form.

          • Jooster

Selena D’Angelus thought it was a valid art form.

          • Avensis Astari

You’re mixing up the definitions of Art and High Art. Anything is art, really, if it took a bit of creativity to make.

High Art defines the pieces we consider truly intelligent works that epitomise human creativity.

You’re welcome to debate whether CG modelling is High Art, but general opinion in such circles is moving against you in light of how much it’s progressing lately.

Also waving away CG modelling as just mashing shapes together is as ignorant as calling film-making, “pointing a camera,” or sculpting, “hitting marble with a chisel.”

This only makes you seem silly to the rest of us, An-Enemy. Funny coincidence, given your name. Almost as though you’re antagonistic and a contrarian just for the sake of it…

          • Avensis Astari

Untrue. A lot of things take time or rewatches to understand what they’re about, and you steadily gain an appreciation of them.

Look how many movies flop only to become cult classics after people start to decipher the meanings not presented at face value. 🙂

          • An_Enemy

You’re comparing a chunk of immobile plastic to a movie?

          • Badgerboy1977

You could also compare it to art, music, architecture and sculpture, in fact any creative art form that relies on the ‘taste’ of the viewer/listener.

          • An_Enemy

            No. You can’t.

This is not a book, album, or a movie.

Do you often stare at a tank and wonder pensively about the nuance of its barrels and treads?

Do you consider what the CAD drone meant to impart on the customer as he lazily adjusted preloaded sculpts and distorted their dimensions by a few millimeters?

Are you wondering how what he had for lunch that day effected the final stage of his masterpiece?

          • DoctorBored

Wow, you woke up on the wrong side of the bed today. Clearly you haven’t seen the rest of the new pics.

Also, clearly you’re not a digital artist of any kind.

          • An_Enemy

I did. I think the iron striders look great.

          • Badgerboy1977

The only thing you’ve been correct about so far I’m afraid is that this isn’t “a book, album or movie” the rest is simply a lack of understanding I’d say.

          • Andrew

Wow, you are being extremely aggressive for no real reason. Also, yes, sometimes visual art does take a while to “grow on you”. Are you saying that every painting or sculpture you love was an immediate understanding of the piece and all of its nuances. Anything you don’t like you immediately said “That’s crap” and moved on? If so, I think you’re definitely in the minority on that one dude.

That being said I like the crab tank thing, looks bulky yet complicated. My only gripe is that the hull should be “busier”.

          • Tim Currey

No it’s not a book album or movie, but they are using any creative medium as a comparison like sculpture paintings and architecture, which you ignore in your argument. It’s fine that you don’t like it, but just admit your argument is flawed and move on already

          • An_Enemy

All you guys are saying is “its like a book, album, or movie” then you admit its not like a book, album, or movie…

            Yet my argument is flawed.

          • Badgerboy1977

We didn’t say it wasn’t “like a book, album, or movie” in fact the opposite of that because it is like them in all the ways that have been stated, what actually happened was that we agreed with you in that they aren’t actually “a book, album, or movie” which is physically true.

          • Tim Currey

Again you completely ignore the fact that I just said it’s being compared to sculpture, art and architecture. Have you been hit in the head to much or something

          • PrimoFederalist

An_Enemy: you are obviously an obtuse fool. Of course almost anything can “grow on you” – every rational adult knows this. From relationships, to art, to coffee and beer, to certain foods.

You’re a funny fellow for choosing this hill to make your stand.

          • Avensis Astari

That comment displays quite a level of ignorance. Honestly, that’s your counterpoint?

So the Mona Lisa is just a paint-spattered canvas? Citizen Kane is just a spool of celluloid film? You only see the medium and materials, not the product?

          • An_Enemy

Again…back to paintings and films to justify a plastic model for a board game. Wow.

I don’t really need to make a counterpoint to this do I? This entire argument can be covered by a gif from The Big Lebowski.

          • Avensis Astari

Just because your narcissism means you can’t appraise other people’s points without belittling them, doesn’t mean you’re exempt from backing up your vague complaining with something concrete.

Some miniatures for board games are true, genuine works of art – especially when painted by a talented individual of Crystal Brush or Golden Daemon caliber. It is not the fault of those discussing this situation with you that you are unable to comprehend this – your willful ignorance is not a protection.

          • Carnage

well since we can compare apples to oranges why would we choose to just like something or not? would that not be bland, kinda counter-intuitive to art and creativity in general…? because to be frank: anything someone else can interpret can be seen as art. if someone tagged their graphitti somewhere someone else wouldn’t “get it” immediately, and to most it’s not “art” but that is why people have this thing called an “opinion” it means everyone is wrong about everything to someone else.

          • Andrew Webb

so really, what you are saying is…… you are a prick….

          • Andrew

Do you even play 40k? I’m really rather lost as to why you’re making this argument. You don’t like a miniature, others do, and some are undecided. I really hope I never play a game with you ever.

      • Nathaniel Wright

Looks fine to me, but then again I guess I’m too -new- at the whole 40k thing to have a valid opinion.

        • Syratogo

You have eyes, you have the right to an opinion. Hell this is the internet, you could opine with less.

      • Tynskel

the walker looks like a defiler…

        • Andrew

I was thinking the same thing. Gives me some ideas for a more sleek one for my Emperor’s Children army.

        • euansmith

Dude, there is no need to be so cruel! 😉

      • Oddiun

The Taurox is the best looking vehicle GW has produced.

    • Talos2

Think we need to judge it when we see a proper pic of it. Potentially, if it’s ony sentinel size, it could work

    • Jake Nolan

Sentinel cockpit on top of non-spiky Defiler legs, hope it’s not a sign of things to come.

    • BrianDavion

it makes me think of a loyalist defiler.

  • TimW

Must say I am pleasantly surprised. I really thought all this Admech stuff was made-up. Proven wrong once again! THANKS GW.

  • Warrior_of_Sound

I kinda hope this is like the Scions where we can get away with a White Dwarf issues for rules for a good amount of time, want to spend my money on plastic not plastic coated paper

  • DoctorBored

Looking good. I like the look of the troop dood (Guessing the Ranger?) pretty much exactly what I was hoping for with Admech troops. The walker is interesting. At first glance it looks weird, but there’s a lot of flat surface for freehanding or converting extra cables and bits on to make it look more ‘admechy’. I’ll wait for the 360 on that before casting judgement.

    • Matt

But this is the internet. You are supposed to cast judgement freely and with only sketches of the facts. It’s a 40K after all.

  • Barty

The walker to me just screams that it’s something like a Sentinel case given spider legs. Which just feels eh.

    • Jake Nolan

      Exactly!

  • Chris. K Cook

I like the Walker, it suggests the STC that the Dark Mechanicus have perverted to make the Defiler.

    • Malevengion

I had the same impression when I looked at it as well.

      • BrianDavion

yeah I thought so too. glad I’m not the only one.

  • Jake Nolan

Robotnik Cogturn coming at you! Courtesy of GW “writing” department!

In all seriousness though, I’m excited about the Adeptus Mechanicus, but I hope the Sentinel cockpit on top of the Defiler legs isn’t a sign of things to come. I require more forgeworld style aesthetics so those miniatures aren’t alien to the rest of the force’s aesthetics.

Oh yeah… and hopefully we don’t have character names like the aforementioned above.

    • And yet, I’m sure the Adeptus Mecha-Nope-us contraption would sell like hotcakes of multilegged killitwithfire…

    • bfmusashi

Robotnik Cogturn is now the thing I want most in the canon.

  • Kresjah

That walker looks like an IG Sentinel top with some added bits and Chaos Defiler spider legs. I guess that makes it:

    Harvey “Two-Race” Dentinel

    • You are ridiculous. I much prefer the Seniler!

      • Kresjah

Might as well add the suggestions from our friend Ramrod:
        * Sentifiler
        * Defilinel

  • Christie Bryden

hmm nice, tempted to combine them with my warpsmith for some dark machaneum.

    • Damistar

paint the robes black and add some tentacles/ living bits and you’ve got your Hereteks. Look to the art in FFGs Black Crusade game for inspiration.

    • BrianDavion

hmm could run the troops as CSMs, use the walker as a defiler?

  • An_Enemy

    Loading Reservingjudgment.exe…

  • Badgerboy1977

From what I can see I’m really looking forward to this release (which has been a very long time coming), the troops particularly even from that low res pic look very good.

I do need to see more of the walker to make a proper judgement on it but as the Skitarii are akin to an Ad Mech version of the AM I’d say it’s looking about right.

  • MrBaDZaG

    Outdated post BolS as always…

    • MrBaDZaG

      And there’s even more!

      • DoctorBored

OMG THIS IS SO MUCH BETTER YESSSSS YES YES YES I WILL BUY A MILLION OF THESE!!!!

        • disqus_I1VIVQiPZK

I actually like the Defilinel better personally

      • An_Enemy

Damn you! These were supposed to be slowly strung out over a two week period. Now where will the ad revenue be artificially padded? Quick, someone get Goatboy to write something about farts.

    • Badgerboy1977

Those are all just superb quite frankly, really can’t wait now 🙂

    • Matt

The BoLS pic, not so much. This one? All sorts of win.

    • Took me a second glance to notice the dude at the bottom working the legs. Best model they’ve done in a while.

    • PrimoFederalist

Very awesome. It’s like the concept art of the late-80s/early-90s fully realized in miniature form. The with the dude working the legs plugged into the machine looks like something from the mind of David Lynch.

      • Badgerboy1977

I was thinking more Geiger myself but that works as well.

  • that walker looks more orky to me than anything else

  • Sparti67

My wife saw these pics and started filling out divorce papers.

    • DoctorBored

      Uh.

Signs you need to take a break from your hobby and spend that money on a romantic vacation instead?

      • Avensis Astari

I think this is what some of us would call a, “joke,” DoctorBored.

  • Vorsun

I’m loving that walker. It’s like someone stuck Cherno Alpha’s head on that spider-baby thing from Toy Story.

  • Tim Currey

These look super sweet. Skiitari are pretty cool

    • Talos2

Love these, that’s what I was hoping for

  • So will this one have a HQ choice at the least? While I did like the Harlequins release, part of me was kinda ticked when Harlequins turned out to have any HQ choices, not that is a major thing really but I digress.

    • BrianDavion

one would hope at the very least you could take a tech preist as an HQ

  • latro990

    will just leave this here

    • latro990

      😀

      • latro990

        🙂

  • latro990

    hehe B&C harvest

    • It’s guys like you that keep me coming back to Bols, thank you.

    • JP

Oh boy, those Radium weapons look mighty dangerous. Depending on their cost and how many you can get in a unit they could spell major trouble….

      • disqus_I1VIVQiPZK

Its the standard rifle of the vanguard, you have to pay to swap them out

        • JP

I love it. It’s freaking gorgeous. Auto double wounds on 6’s. Suck it Monstrous Creatures.

      • latro990

lol the rifle ones are the standard gun of the vangaurd dudes!

      • BrianDavion

as others have noted they’re the standard rifle. keep in mind they ARE only Strength 3.

        • Carnage

but is the -1 to T both culminative as well as applied to end of player turn. if so then shoot rad at enemy, reduce -3 from T, then shoot with lasguns for insta-gib. even lasguns become marine/knight killers (maybe knights but definitely anything less than a knight)

          • Avensis Astari

Knights don’t have a Toughness value.

  • PrimoFederalist
  • Max Knickerbocker

Boy is it about time that the Lords of Mars joined the 40K universe. I will pick up the codex for sure to add some allies for my Space Marines. AND after I pick up a Titan from Forge World, they will have their own support troops.

    • BrianDavion

yeah, I’m thinking that these suckers would look GREAT arrayed with a titan. hmm

      • Deathmage

        Ad-mech scions… With titan… Goodbye wallet…

  • David Dutton

I think the walker just suffers from an odd paintjob. the cream color doesn’t work for me so much and I would choose a darker red then that, but that’s just personal preference. Still, I appreciate the plain design for the front which means you have a good place to add some freehand work.

  • StingrayP226

The walker looks like an ork walker without the orky symbols on a Defiler’s legs without the extra chaos/spikes its really a disappointment IMHO. However the other pictures (while not my personal like) have a lot more character and just fit so much better.
