FFG: Inquisitor’s TIE Zooms into X-Wing

inquisitor's TIE

The new Inquisitor’s TIE is headed for X-Wing and it will shake up the game for a LOT of ships.

Here’s the latest from FFG on the upcoming Wave 8 Inquisitor’s TIE from the REBELS cartoon:

Inquisitor’s TIE Expansion Pack $14.95

“Personally tasked by Darth Vader to eliminate any surviving Jedi Knights, the Inquisitor had access to the Empire’s most advanced technologies, including the TIE Advanced prototype, a groundbreaking improvement over the TIE fighter designs of its time. In X-Wing™, this lethal starfighter appears as a carefully detailed and pre-painted miniature at 1/270 scale, along with four ship cards, including one for the Inquisitor himself. Additionally, the Inquisitor’s TIE Expansion Pack contains five upgrades, a maneuver dial, and all the tokens you need to launch into space and pursue your foes through the stars!”

Here’s the ship’s maneuver dial.  She’s a fast one, with a lot of green and almost no red.

Now some of the included pilots:

16 points isn’t bad for that kind of defense and choice of actions!

And he’s going to defending a lot…

So he’s got 3 attack dice all the time – NICE!

Now onto the new cards that are sure to shake up the game:

A nice little perk for the ship…

Interesting, now you can have gain target lock efficiency for swarm lists. One guy hits, everyone locks!

And this is the BIG ONE.  This card is clearly aimed at improving the power and use of munitions.  Now for 0 points, any missile, or torpedo will automatically hit, or crit if the ship has a 3 attack value.  So watch out for those X-wings now!

I think the Empire has a winner – how about you?

Guidance Chips will be really nice with my Rebel ships, especially stockpiling them with missiles and torpedoes. But it’s also handy with that XX-23… get your ships clustered together well enough, and they can unleash a nasty salvo on a target. And since it’s got the missile designation, it can change a die result if you gave that mod to the ship with the XX-23, making it more likely to hit. In Epic games, that’d probably be a great way to wreck a huge ship.

I wonder with The Inquisitor if his special rule applies to attacking *and* defending? If it does, that also means the defender loses the extra agility at Range 3. That’s pretty brutal.

A squadron of these guys would be interesting to see in action. You could get at least four of them, including both named pilots. Load them up with missiles, give one an XX-23, use the maneuverability to stay close together, and wreck the nastiest ship on the other side, then spread out and go nuts.

    • Agent OfBolas

yes, if Inquisitor attacks – target loses extra agility dice for Range 3

      • V10_Rob

“The range of the ATTACK is 1, but is the range of the DEFENSE still 3?” That was my thoughts, too.

Don’t think it’s in the errata yet, but FFG’s press release says this:

“…It does not matter if his target is at range 1 or range 3; so long as he is firing with his ship’s primary weapon, you treat the attack as though it were made at range 1, meaning that you add an extra die and your opponent does not gain an extra defense die for range, even at range 3.”

        • Agent OfBolas

Yes, this case is in my opinion unclear – but with FFG support we can be sure that FAQ is going to hit net ASAP.

  • Spacefrisian

Valen Rudon with Tie /v1 upgrade, seems funny, oh i get attacked…defend, target lock evade…oh i get attacked…defend, target lock evade…repeat. Could be one annoying ship.

You can even start with an evade if a buddy of his starts with xx-23, maybe his buddy could be that Punisher with munitions.

    • Agent OfBolas

so sad that Rebels are not getting such cool ships. Cheap and effective.

Direct competitor for Inquisitor is Tycho, and I consider Tycho as much worse choice.

    • ForgottenLore

You still can only perform a given action once per round, so you won’t be able to TL multiple times (or do 2 boosts or 2 barrel rolls)

    • Lightrock

As mentioned by others, can’t do the same action twice. Besides, why would he get attacked in the first place? He still only has 2 attack dice and clearly isn’t a massive threat but he can soak up a lot of shots before he goes down. Unless you’re playing against a rookie (or an idiot), he’ll just get ignored until he’s the last ship you have. I expect both the vanilla Sienars and the Inquisitor himself will see some use. The former due to very decent price-to-performance ratio, the latter due to his pilot ability that allows him to overcome low attack value and turns him into an excellent range 3 sniper. Valen on the other hand… there are much better ways to spend 22+ points.

Another TIE Advanced version? But I want the one I spent years dogfighting back in the day. /poutybaby

    • Red_Five_Standing_By

This one is from the Star Wars Rebels show, hence why it is getting a push.

      • Crevab

I see that, but I want them to cater exclusively to meeeeee

  • Drpx

One wonders if this was truly intended as a different class of TIE Adv, or if someone just saw the style in Rebels and realized there was enough variance to make one.
