SHOWCASE Dark Age: Painting the Prevailer Council
Time to start painting up a new subfaction for my Forsaken Army.
With Saint Mary complete, I’ve decided to expand my Forsaken army into the Prevailer Council Subfaction. These guys were the big release for Dark Age at Gencon 2015, and I came home with almost all of them in suitcase. I can’t believe its taken me this long to get to painting them.
A lot of what I’m doing with this guy was covered in my Flock Painting Articles. The brown padded leather was in part 1, and the blue/black shoe leather was in part 2. I didn’t see any reason to repeat all that again, so there are links for you to go have a look at.
For this guy I wanted to try to work out a new way to do a bronze NMM. Using P3 colors as always, I started with Thornwood Green highlighted with Underbelly Blue. Part of getting that NMM feel is creating the look of a very sharp light source, so I’m tying to focus my highlights in a circle on top of that helmet.
Now I’ve started spreading working on the rest of the armor. I’ve also started adding some darker shading with a warm toned black. I’ve mixed some Bloodstone and Red Ink in with this black and the hope is that this warmth will create a nice contrast with the cool Underbelly Blue.
I add some distressing in the form of dings and scratches with very thinned down Underbelly Blue applied with swift strokes. Once I have the metal tones on all the armor, I apply a very thin wash of Trollblood base directly to some of the crevices to create a patina.
And here we are after everything has received the patina. I’ve also defined the rivets with a coat of Thornwood followed by a spot of Underbelly Blue. Just enough of the Thornwood is left showing to create an outline.
I went ahead and did shots of the shield during the process as well. I think these might be even more instructive than the rest.

And then the other metals. The copper is Bloodstone highlighted with Menoth White Highlight and shaded with Coal Black. The greenish brass is Cryx Bane Base highlighted with Sulfuric Yellow and then some more of that Menoth White Highlight. There are some better steps of the Brass in this article.
I use the same green brass technique in a lot of other places: The kneepads, gorget, and the trim on the chestplate. Then I start on the cloak. I went with a really vibrant unnatural color to try to push the sci-fi theme. It is a sci-fi setting after all, but these War Knights are obviously drawing some of their aesthetic from fantasy styles. I want the cloak to make their actual origins more clear. The color itself is Khador Red Highlight, shaded with just a bit of Umbral Umber and highlighted with Menoth White Highlight.
Here I’m kicking up the Umbral Umber, and I’ve also begun to add some even darker shading with the warm toned black.
And here we are with the cloak complete.
As for how I did the spear, you can once again look back to the Flock article – part 2. It’s the same technique as the steel armor and haft I did there.
Last: a bonus shot. I was originally floating doing all the armor in the Green Brass, but it just didn’t look right to me. Looks like some kinda weird bug armor or something. So all this was painted over.
And here he is again. I don’t love the pose as much as I do the concept and overall design.
Here’s the whole group. I thought about adding more but even with the Captain you can only squadlink one more model. I guess I’ll wait and see how they play.
The coolest thing about playing Prevailer council: they get Archangels.
