Hello again BoLS Readers! I’m back with another BoLS Unboxing. This time we got an early look at the new Tabletop Boardgame Star Wars: Rebellion from Fantasy Flight Games. There is a TON of cool stuff inside this box so lets get started:

Let me just start by saying this box is hefty. It’s got a TON of stuff inside. Also, the playing boards were a lot bigger than I was initially expecting. That’s not a bad thing. Aside from the surprise at the board sizes, I was also struck by the difference in the number of pieces per side. I knew that the game was asymmetrical in both objectives and military might – but I wasn’t quite sure until I laid out all the pieces and saw just how out gunned the Rebels are compared to the Empire. That doesn’t mean the game isn’t balanced. Because their objectives are different both sides still feel like they are fighting against the clock. But I don’t want to get into mechanics just yet…Lets talk about the components!

This box has 153 miniatures, 25 leaders with stands, 10 dice and 170 cards. Oh and don’t forget the two Rules packs – the Learn-to-Play book and the Rules Reference. Everything in the box is the typical high production quality we’ve come to expect from FFG. This stuff isn’t going to fall apart after one use – it’s built to last many weekend game sessions. And speaking of game sessions, this game runs about 3-4 hours and is designed for 2-4 players (either 1v1 or 2v2). So I would put this on par with a game of Axis & Allies in length (depending on how fast you play). I can see this game being added to a gaming groups rotation very easily.

One of things I would also like to mention is that this game lends itself to a very cinematic story-like game play. A lot of the events in the Star Wars Original Trilogy can be recreated in game. Thats done through use of objectives and missions. But don’t think that  every game is going to play out just like the movies. There are lots of ways players can throw curveballs at your plans. The tactical cards and tip battle plans in your favor – or delay your destruction just long enough to complete an objective.

Overall, I think Star Wars: Rebellion is an outstanding product from Fantasy Flight Games. The components are great, the rules are easy to follow, and the gameplay looks very cinematic. I’m totally game to pull this out for a Saturday gaming session and throw some dice with some friends!

Yet for all its grandiosity, Star Wars™: Rebellion remains intensely personal, cinematic, and heroic. As much as your success depends upon the strength of your starships, vehicles, and troops, it depends upon the individual efforts of such notable characters as Leia Organa™, Mon Mothma™, Grand Moff Tarkin™, and Emperor Palpatine™.
