The skorne character unit is here and they are Legendary! Let us take a closer look.

The new character unit of skorne is a trio of Praetorian waving weapons around trying to cut down any foe.

The Unit:

The trio are named Valgesh, Cidaar, and J’Deth.

Valgesh is armed with 2 swords .  He has flank with Cidaar or J’Deth making him effectively a Mat9 Pow10 weaponmaster.  He also grants the unit sidestep.  He can exchange his 2 attacks for a Pow13 combostrike

Cidaar is armed with a Reach Pow12.  He has flank with Valgesh and J’Deth making him effectively a Mat9 Pow12 weaponmaster.  He has defensive strike and grants the unit +2 Defense while they are base to base with each other.

J’Deth is armed with 2 maces at Pow11.  He has flank with Cidaar and Valgesh making him effectively a Mat9 Pow11 weaponmaster.  He grants the unit relentless charge so they can charge through terrain with no penalites. He can exchange his attacks for combo smite at Pow15.

So these guys are melee only and have a few useful abilities to make it to there enemies.  Terrain doesn’t slow them down, they are defense 15 while base to base and with a decent base armor most light shooting doesn’t 1 shot them. They can get a little deeper in the line with side step so they hit some important models like necro surgeons that have a protective screen of mechanithralls to hide behind.  One great thing about this unit is they are cheap point cost as they cost the same as a Basilisk.

What warlock can get the most out of the Legends?

Since these guys are really cheap unit to field they can be useful with most casters.  Morgul is really the only warlock that might think twice before fielding them as he doesn’t do much for them and they are not in his tier lists.  Here are some ideas with a few different warlocks to consider:

  • Hexeris2 and Black Spot:  The Legends are already decent MAT.  Combined with Cidaar’s reach you should be able to get flank quite easily. If you can get in the middle of a enemy unit that has been debuffed with blackspot they could potentially kill quite a lot of troopers.
  • Makeda1 and Defenders Ward: While base to base and with defenders ward the Legends are 17/17.  That is quite an annoying stat line to get rid of.
  • Makeda2 and everything:  Makeda2 is a great deliverer of models and her feat gives attack rolls buffs.  She can get the Legends to a spot on the board to do some legendary work.
  • Xerxis1:  Like Makeda he makes troopers better and it is no difference for the Legends.  Defenders ward is still probably better on the Cataphract but his feat, martial discipline, and battle cries are all useful to make these guys truly legendary.

How do you kill a Legend?

At the end of the day these are still Praetorians.  They don’t have sprint and their defensive tech is really only while they are base to base.  If you can reliably hit defense 15 then these guys should drop pretty easily. Since these guys want to be bunched up to get their defensive bonus things like boosted blast AOEs or continuous fire can drop them.  They can only make 1 defensive strike so you might lose a guy in the way in.  Watch out for J’Deth since he can hit pretty hard with Pow15 combo Smite and knockdown.  They only have 9.5 and 11.5 threat without buffs so consider this when facing the Legends of Halaak.
