40K: Imperial Knight Renegade: White Dwarf Battle Report

knightart-08

The latest White Dwarf has a battle of Titanic proportions – Imperial Knight: Renegade in Action!

White Dwarf is hot off the presses and it looks like someone got it early…or at least had their phone on them. Here are some pics from the Imperial Knight Battle Report included in this month’s White Dwarf.

Spoilers ahead for the Battle – You have been warned!

Unfortunately we don’t get a good glimpse of the rules for the game – only the stylized version of the events from the battle. Still, it’s a bit more entertaining than “I rolled a 4 and hit. The Knight took a hull point of damage.” It’s also funny to see the “map” of the table. It’s only got the two pieces of terrain…I hope that was a 3×3 or a 2×2 board. I know I want to give this game a shot with a full spread (and probably more than 2 knights…)

So to answer a few questions some of you may or may not have asked:

– AFAIK the game is not restricted to English.
– The two Knights in the story are the Ever-Stalwart of House Terryn (Battle Cannon, Reaper Chainsword, Icarus Autocannon, Heavy Stubbers) and the Litany of Destruction (Reaper Chainsword, Thunderstrike Gauntlet, Ironstorm Missile Pod, Heavy Stubber).
– There are only two big cards, one for each of these knights setups. But there are references to play with other weapons setups.
– Game includes a Datasheet to play a Renegade Knight in 40K, but there is only one sheet so I hope they’re not restricted to the CC version.
– Also includes a detachment to ally Knights to CSM and Chaos Daemons.
– 8 pages of rules including the 40K ones if I got it right.

It didn’t notice anything special regarding availability.

There are no rules in the next WD (besides a new unrelated BaC scenario), so far it’s all in the box.

No Orruks in the next WD.

New boxed game called “Imperial Knight: Renegade” instead (1 Imperial Knight, 1 IK Warden and 1 Sanctum Imperialis + rules)
165€ / £120 / $195 / and for once the real prices for all to see: CA$ 235 / AU$ 245 / NZ$ 290 / 22.000 Yen

So both a huge price but a huge discount at the same time, making it a pretty solid choice if you want 2 Knights. Too bad the large difference between the UK and Euro price will make us incapable of competing vs UK retailers.

Game is derived from the minigame they did in the WD around the Stormsurge release if I remember correctly, the one were each superheavy had its own datasheet, with damage locations and numbers everywhere. Game includes specific decals for each knight allowing you to decorate one of them as a renegade Knight. No Chaos specific sprues thought (those are the regular models already sold in stores).

Imperial Knight: Renegade Round-Up

  • nurglitch

    That was vague.

  • Admiral Raptor

It’s very tempting. Even considering how overpriced regular Knights are at $170 & $188 CDN respectively; getting 2 and a terrain piece for $235 means I can get them for about $100 each (what they should retail for) and the terrain piece for $35. That’s not too shabby at all.

Their transition to 6’x8′ tables will soon be complete, thereby doubling their realm of battle sales for rockem-em-sock-em battlegrounds.

    • Dominic Davis-Foster

No! I’ll have to build an extension to fit the table in!

    • Chris. K Cook

      Ok…

      • ZeeLobby

Aw. I don’t think your cat likes his hat.

  • Woe is me. I have to choose between that and the Deathwatch game. On one hand I really want those hybrids. on the other I really want those discount knights.

    • JP

The Deathwatch models won’t be around forever. The sprues are stamped “Limited”. Of course, that doesn’t tell us how long they WILL be around either.

      • Ben_S

First I’d heard that it’s limited edition. (Obviously everything’s limited in some sense.) Thanks for the warning.

        • JP

I just figured it out not that long ago myself. Stuff that isn’t sticking around actually has “Limited” stamped on the sprue. Look at the close ups of the Imperial Space Marine sprue. It’s visible there.

          • Chris. K Cook

And none of the Exclusive minis that are now available outside of those boxes had this right?

          • JP

I don’t know about all of them. What I do know is that Assassins I got out of the Execution Force box before they were released separately don’t have “Limited” on their sprues. Interestingly, if you examine the sprue pictures for Betrayal at Calth, they don’t have “Limited” on them either. Of course, even though I see a pattern, it could all just be speculation. Anybody still got the sprues for Krom Dragongaze and Grukk before they were released as individual models? That might cement the theory.

          • I think I remember noticing that on the Space Hulk sprues from 2014. Still have the sprues, will check later.

          • Greg Fleming

Neither Gruk or Krom have anything written on their sprue (other than the regular year and production number) nor does the BA Capt or the Nid beasty from Deathstorm. Looking at both boxes right now.

          • JP

So, all of this seems to point to the idea that we can tell what new models released in these box sets might be re-released as solo models later by whether or not they have “Limited” stamped on the sprue. There’s a reasonable chance the Deathstorm Broodlord and Captain will be sold again by themselves. If they are, I’d say we can call this a confirmed theory.

      • Derek Lee

Deathwatch just got all the schools of psychic powers in the Angels of Death book. They could be released in their own box one day along with codex.

  • Randy Randalman

I’m interested to see the new detachment for Knights with CSM’s and Demons!

  • Deacon Ix

Just after payday, this could be a good or bad thing as my mate pointed out that with 2 of these you would have the basis of a 30k or 40k Knight force.

  • Dave Scammell

You’re telling me there’s a GAME that comes with this Value Pack too?

  • Andrew Thomas

Wants it. Although I’d probably magnetize the weapons, I still think it’d be cool to model a Knight suplexing a Russ or a Land Raider. One can dream…

  • knightsanguis

See, this is exactly the sort of stuff Chaos players need. Not every Knight is going to be loyal to the Imperium so it makes sense to allow Chaos players to use them in their armies as well. If they’re not going to update CSM or Daemons then at least players get this. Now all they need is the something allowing them to ally an AdMech army with their Chaos.

    • Greg Fleming

I doubt we will ever see a Dark Mechanicum force separate. That’s specifically what the deamon engines are for and where they come from. Just look at the dunecrawler, it’s a Defiler.

      • Red_Five_Standing_By

I was giggling when I was building my defiler after having helped build a mate’s dune crawler
