The band of super villain misfits are back with more sweet 1970s rock tunes… and more Joker!

David Ayer is on writing and directing for this one – he’s known for cop dramas including Training Day and End of Watch. The action pack includes: Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn; Will Smith as DeadshotJoel Kinnaman as Rick Flag Jr; Jared Leto as The Joker;  Cara Delevingne as Enchantress; Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang; Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Killer Croc; Karen Fukuhara as Katana; Jay Hernandez as El Diablo; and Adam Beach as Slipknot.

First official trailer was released in January.

And they dropped another during the MTV Music Awards on Sunday… can you spot the Inifinti G35 in this trailer?

So far we’ve heard the Bee Gees, Lesley Gore, Queen, and Sweet. If the next trailer doesn’t include Radar Love or Black Betty I’m going to be disappointed.

Music choices aside…

Rag tag bunch, classic rock, comedic breaks, big booms, and impossible mission… the “we’re making our own Guardians of the Galaxy!” sirens are going off in the back of my head right now.

Now, I know the squad is hardly new.

original dc squad

The Kanigher/Andru creation has gone through a lot of iterations since 1959, and has included countless DC villains among its ranks. The original squad hung on till the late 1980s, and has bounced around a lot since Ostrander’s re-imagining. Arrow has its own version of the team in the latest season, and Batman: Assault on Arkham has another. What we’re getting in the movie is pretty close to The New Suicide Squad cast  with some character design from The New 52 – though, no Duella or Joker wearing his own face…that we’ve seen, at least.

It certainly looks like we’re getting Harley’s origin story in this one, and a possible struggle to get out from underneath the Joker’s thumb, along with the story of the squad itself. I’m curious to see what Scott Eastwood is doing in this one – are we getting to see Deathstroke on the big screen?

I’m a bit disenchanted with Warner Brother’s effort to bring the DC Universe on to the screen right now. This project has some good things going for it – decent director and production team; a not half bad cast that seems to be taking the traditional route with their characters; and the trailers haven’t been plot spoiling disasters. Hopefully the months between now and August will be a good palate cleanser.

Thoughts?

A Hint on the Inifinti: It’s really shiny and pink.
