The Tabletop Spotlight is on Mystic Vale – a Card Building Game!

Our friends at Dragon’s Lair Comics & Fantasy brought over this gem of a game from AEG – Mystic Vale is the first time I had ever seen a CARD crafting game:

So what the heck is a Card Crafting Game? Basically players have a deck of mini cards that they use to upgrade and enhance a much larger “tarot” sized card. The cards are made from a clear plastic and are designed to stack in such a way that you can see all the card effects. This illustration from AEG might help:

The card crafting is just one of the cool mechanics in the game. If you’ve played Magic: The Gathering then most of the concepts will be familiar to you.

Each player represents a Druid clan trying to heal their land from the dreaded corruption. The players are trying to score more points than the other players but at the same time, they must manage their turns wisely. If you’re not careful, you’ll end your turn early as the corruption and decay takes over. But if you play to conservatively the other players will leap ahead of you!

You can see the full rules for free right here – AEG has them available on their website. If the idea of customizing your cards sounds intriguing to you then I’d highly recommend taking a look at this one. The Art style is fantastic and the mechanics are very interesting. Everyone starts on roughly the same even playing field but everything shifts as mini cards are purchased and used in conjunction with the other Vale cards. Player strategy must diverge and develop over time – and if you can figure out what your opponents are going for, you might be able to prevent them from getting ahead – as long as you don’t screw-up your own plans! Mystic Vale is in stores now!

A curse has been placed on the Valley of Life. Hearing the spirits of nature cry out for aid, clans of druids have arrived, determined to use their blessings to heal the land and rescue the spirits. It will require courage and also caution, as the curse can overwhelm the careless who wield too much power.

In Mystic Vale, 2 to 4 players take on the role of druidic clans trying to cleanse the curse upon the land. Each turn, you play cards into your field to gain powerful advancements and useful vale cards. Use your power wisely, or decay will end your turn prematurely. Score the most victory points to win the game!
