Come See Star Trek Ascendancy in action!

As many folks are well aware, we stopped by the Gale Force 9 Booth at GenCon 2016 and got our hands on their new game Star Trek Ascendancy. Now come see it played:

In our previous article I went over the basics of the game. I’m not going to re-hash all that information here. However, I do want to direct you over to the rules again. Why? Because they are free form GF9 and they can answer all of your questions about the gameplay.

Over the past few days the BoLS Crew has gotten a few games under our collective belts and we are really digging it. Stable Abe even managed to pull off a Cultural Victory with the Klingons. Yes, the military focused faction won a Cultural Victor over both the Romulans AND the Federation. That’s what is so neat about this game. There are different ways to achieve a victory and you might just surprise yourself.

While we do enjoy playing the game and are hoping to get more games in the future we do have one gripe: We need more RACES! One of the victory conditions is currently “Control 3 Home worlds” – that’s virtually impossible right now with the game because there are ONLY 3 Home Worlds. You’d basically have to find a way to wipe out the other two players and unless you get REALLY lucky, that’s one lofty goal. Plus it makes it really easy to spot when players are allies – there isn’t a ton of diplomacy with only 3 players. If you aren’t in an alliance it’s safe to assume the other two players are going to gang-up on you.

This gripe could be easily taken care of with a few race/faction expansion packs…

Oh yeah, that’s right – two more are on the way. I really like the way these Expansions scale because for each additional race/player added to the game you are basically adding (roughly) an hour to game play. I think that’s probably a bit high of an estimate but it’s a good ball-park of how much time it could add. If I were a betting man I’d put money on up coming factions like the Borg, Jem’Hadar/Dominion, and the Tholians. I wouldn’t be surprised to see other races like the Gorn or Breen either. I’m also secretly hoping for a Mirror Verse version of the Federation – fingers crossed that it comes with fake goatees for the player!
