Warhammer: The White Dwarf Gets Rules

If you’ve always wanted to run “THE” White Dwarf in Age of Sigmar and the Silver Tower – today is your lucky day!

Here’s the big guy himself, all ripped and ready to take his actions to Sigmar’s enemies in the 8 Realms:

Grombrindal, The White Dwarf $20

Grombrindal – The White Dwarf himself, namesake of the Ultimate Warhammer Magazine – comes to the Mortal Realms! Some say Grombrindal is the living incarnation of Snorri Longbeard himself; others that he was betrothed to the goddess Valaya. None truly know the origins of this most ancient and venerable of the Duardin race, but you can get your hands on him right now.

Grombrindal, The White Dwarf presents the Dispossessed Unforged miniature in exclusive Grombrindal packaging, available in this format for a limited time only. Full rules for using Grombrindal, The White Dwarf in both Warhammer Age of Sigmar and Warhammer Quest Silver Tower can be found exclusively in September’s issue of White Dwarf!

And the Rules

He’s St. Celestine – with a beard!

He heals and gives bonus Renown to his buddies. That’s handy!

~ Hmm, the real question is do you like him in his new “slayer form”, or his previous “career” versions?

  • JP

WOW. This guy should be called “The Painbringer”.
He shall arrive and layeth the smacketh down on any he encounters.

    • Aezeal

Yeah combined with his “as if from nowhere” that is very nasty.

  • nuggy

Pretty dull that they just reissued not only an old mini, but one that is still being sold.
The White dwarf miniatures where always about that little extra collectors thing and outlet for the crazy creativity of the sculptors, and to that end this just feels so lazy.
Love that he got rules for both AoS and ST though! Will definitely use an old White dwarf for those.

    • kingcobra668

^ old man on the back porch

    • Aezeal

Me and GW are nearly always in agreement.. but here I have to agree with you.

When I opened this page I first thought.. BOLS.. WHY do you put a picture of a white haired slayer over this article (mea culpa BOLS).

I mean it’s a very nice mini, dynamic and all.. but still lazy from GW. I’ll just use my

if I ever want to use him.

      • Aezeal

Aw he doesn’t even have his 3 beard braid anymore (which where nearly identical on all the minis posted above).

  • SupPupPup

    Absolute Rubbish.

  • Talos2

Bit of a boring one by white dwarf standards

  • ZeeLobby

Yawn. And people still wonder whether BoLS gets any kickback. I couldn’t with any real heart post this article without at least commenting on the fact that it’s a re-skin of an existing model… I mean with steam head dwarves coming up they couldn’t have done ANYTHING more creative with the model?!

    • ZeeLobby
      • Hawt Dawg

        Da slayah got old!

    • SupPupPup

Its really depressing. Old GW is still there under all the great models and social media they’ve been pushing out lately.

      • ZeeLobby

Yeah. I mean I won’t make a definitive judgement yet. But I would have hoped to spark interest in the new White Dwarf they would have at least used some newer models, and at most made a new White Dwarf. I have a feeling it’ll be this dude, the bloodhound guy, a Sigmarines, and a fyreslayer. All of which are their oldest AoS ranges and they probably have stock just laying around.

I have yet to see anything concrete that GW really has changed. Seems to just be a lot of smoke and mirrors so far. I’ll patiently watch though.

    • BaronSnakPak

But it’s a dollar cheaper! And comes with a round base! The savings!

      • ZeeLobby

Lol. And my post was removed. Obvious ad is obvious.

    • Korvalus

For once, I agree with you. They could have done better. Still, I’ve got a feeling (Wooo-hoooo… What?) that this model is a “placeholder” of sorts and a true miniature of Grombrindal in plastic will come.

      • ZeeLobby

I would give them mad props if this was all just to throw rumors off.

    • Ben_S

I’m assuming this gives us license to give a white beard paint job to any dwarf model we like and use it as the White Dwarf. Personally, I much prefer that to selling an over-priced and/or limited miniature in order to get the special rules.

      • ZeeLobby

LoL. Like you couldn’t do that with friends before… Way to try to do the craziest spin on what is a bad release.

WD minis have always been fun collectibles for those passionate about the hobby. It just smacks of laziness to paint a beard white and call it a day.

        • Ben_S

Of course, with friends you can do whatever you like – make up your own special character and use their rules if you want.

I still think it would be cool if this was the ‘official’ thing to do. It would show GW weren’t simply out for any excuse to sell an overpriced special character and were encouraging people to make their own model (either simply by repainting your favourite stock dwarf or by converting your own WD and painting accordingly).

          • ZeeLobby

GW has been firmly against making your own model for a while now. They purposely don’t create rules for anything they don’t have a model for. It’s why DE special characters disappeared overnight. It’s a sad thing I wish they’d do away with, but based on their crazy AoS names, IP protection is still a number 1 priority at GW. (Let’s just pray that Chaos Space Marines don’t get renamed to Hereticus Astartes).

          • Shawn

Nope it will be Astartes Invisus (Hated Marines)

          • ZeeLobby

Sadly there’s already been a reference to Hereticus Astartes, which is just painful.

          • Aezeal

Depends.. if official Empirial Documents name them as such.. ok.. that could happen, seems logical.
As long as they don’t call themselves that way.

          • Ben_S

“GW has been firmly against making your own model for a while now… It’s a sad thing I
            wish they’d do away with”

Agreed that this has been the case and that it’s a bad thing. Hence I welcome anything that might look like breaking ranks on this.

Given the range of WD models there have been, it would be easy for them to say that he takes many forms – perhaps it’s something like Dr Who.

    • Shawn

I noticed that it looks like Gortek with a white beard. Oh my God! The White Dwarf is Gortek!

I don’t have the original sculpt, but I’ll probably get this, so i can run the White Dwarf for my AoS army.

      • Ben_S

You mean Gotrek, of Gotrek and Felix?

        • Shawn

Yeah. Finger typing faux paux. Sorry. I never read any of the Old World novels, but am somewhat familiar with the character. Should have paid more attention to the spelling.

      • Emperor’s Champion

        It’s spelt Gotrek

  • euansmith

The previous, Space Explorer Grombrindal, is my favourite; though I wonder how he gets his beard inside that helmet. Maybe he uses Space Marines Wax; the stuff that allows them to cram in to their Rhinos.

    • ZeeLobby

      SM Jelly!

      • euansmith

Made from freshly squeezed Grey Knights. 😀

        • Severius_Tolluck

but only after adding sisters blood for the color.

  • Shinnentai

BOLS article doesn’t mention obvious re-use of existing sculpt :

  • rtheom

Wow, this is really pathetic. I’m not even going to officially count this as a “White Dwarf”.

  • Horus84cmd

Sadly feels like a real mis-step, as part of the relaunch of WD, to refresh a older sculpt. Now, the Unforged/Dragon-Slayer miniature itself is a solid, dynamic and kind-of-iconic sculpt and if it hadn’t been previously release would have made a nice incarnation for Grombrindal.

Actually, if I stop and think a little, it makes me wonder if something else has gone on within GW. Nothing sinister, but I’m going to throw this out there. Perhaps, it had been intended for a brand new plastic version of Grombrindal to be released along side the revamped WD. However, could there have possibly been some kind of design/manufacturing issues of a new sculpt that means it could not/would not be ready for the release?

Now, since the WD issue was having new rules for AoS and The Silver Tower, GW needed to need to have “a model” to sell to represent him and the Unforged/Dragon-Slayer was a suitable choice? I ponder this, as I look at the paint job on the model and it doesn’t quiet seem up to normal Eavy Metal scratch?

    • ZeeLobby

It’s really 2 things. Either A) This is an elaborate ruse, in which case bravo GW! or B) This is just lazy. They would have known that a revamp was coming for a while, and they could have rushed a mini out the door.

      • Horus84cmd

Rushing a mini out would depend on what went wrong, how badly it when wrong and when in the production process something went wrong; assuming of course a new sculpt was ever intended in the first place – which we will likely ever find out either way.

        • ZeeLobby

Well, I’m assuming if that was the intention, we will see it release eventually, maybe with the 12th issue, a year of the new WD or something.

      • An elaborate ruse on a model that is already on sale? Nah.

        • ZeeLobby

Er… The elaborate ruse would be that they keep stating that this is the new WD model, and then come magazine day, we find out it is a new model, and this was just a ruse.

          • Horus84cmd

If GW had previewed the above sculpt on the site with no option to pre-order then perhaps. However it’s on the site with the option to order. They would be breaking so many trading laws if they played a switchery-woo with a different sculpt.

The choice is what it is for what it is and sadly, as has been noted by plenty of posters, a mis-judged one

          • ZeeLobby

Yeah, that’s a valid point, I guess it is what we’re getting. A lot less interested in getting a subscription now. Not going to lie, I might have HAD to pull the trigger if the new WD model was clutch.

  • kloosterboer

Grombrindal has always been a unique, one of a kind character. Not an existing model with a white beard.

This is definitely a misstep, but hardly one that dampens my enthusiasm for everything else that’s going on in the World of GDub.

    • Ben_S

I don’t go far enough back to know what he was originally. Was he based on the Heroquest dwarf or vice versa? Was there one before that?

    • Emperor’s Champion

to be fair the dragon slayer model no longer fits with any of the dwarf factions ever since the slayers got revamped for AOS. orange hair and axes are the only similarity.
Not saying i’m happy about it but it is a bit outcast now.

      • Aezeal

Yeah now they have Mohawk helmets instead of real Mohawks (which was a bad idea IMHO).

  • georgelabour

Is it just me or does he resemble a less brain damaged version of Snorri Nosbiter from the Goretk & Felix stories?

  • Bryan Ruhe

    Disappointing. 🙁

  • ThorsHammer

Anyone know if he’s plastic or resin?
Also, what do they mean he’s available for a limited time in this form?

    • ZeeLobby

He’s an existing model that’s already plastic. Limited time might be referring to the blister that says his name on it?

  • Old zogwort

Ugh this must be the ugliest incarnation of the dude ever :

  • Jim Morr

Definetly a new model… they gave him round base…

  • Aezeal

Aside from the model: The rules are nasty…
    – you can set him up next to any enemy unit: he’s like the ultimate assassin and/or artillery wrecker. (not sure if I like this rule)
    – Hard to kill
    – Deals major damage for a humanoid hero (rerolls and more rerolls).
His points should be high ish.

  • Troy

    Grombridal, the Alabaster Duardin!

Reroll any dice to attack if you own more issues of White Dwarf than your opponent. 😂

  • OldHat

Not to defend what I think was a misstep, but all those old models were metal? Right? GW doesn’t do metal anymore, really. And they abandoned Failcast (thankfully), so this would require a brand new injection mold for a clampack character. So, that is a big investment. Maybe this was the best way for them to allow people to use a model they own to enjoy his rules, making it more available to all players, as well as keep the cost down. And maybe that model will go bye-bye when the Dispossessed get their update. So, while I think a new and unique model would be way better, I can at least see some logic behind the decision.

    • Aezeal

You got a point about them injection molds.. but they still do limited stuff for their conventions right (Ok SM will probably sell better than a dwarf if they want to do somethign with it afterwards).

  • Braxton Kingston
  • Xodis

Well thats kinda sad. Big opportunity missed IMO.
