What, UM used to wear yellow? This is pre-wardian era, right?

I believe the Ultramarines 2nd Company changed from the primary colour blitz to blue/gold in 4th edition, while Matthew Ward worked on the 5th ed. Codex.

I’ve got vague recollections of fluff about the change being to honour their pyrrhic victory when Tyranids invaded Macragge, but having trouble finding a reference for that.

Oh, nice. Thanks Rev. At least there is a fluff reason and GW just didn’t make a change without explanation. I kind of like the yellow, red, and blue. It gives the UM more character than they presently have.

As Ronin said, Ultramarines received a grimdarkening of their colors in 4th ed with a darker blue and and change to metal equivalents of the company colors.

I don’t recall any such background (not that that means it doesn’t actually exist) to explain the change. Instead, if I remember the reaction correctly, it was widely read as Ultramarines, being crammed down our throat as usual, were supposed to be cool but someone looked at their color scheme, then a calendar, and then figured that that simply wasn’t the case.

The problem I have with that background explanation is that the change only happened to the 2nd company, which had jack all to do with the defense of Macragge. We don’t see metallic red or purple for the 3rd and 7th company in Ultramarine pictures, nor silver trims for 1st company. Nope, it’s just gold for 2nd company.

Very much a poster boy improvement with nothing else going on.

            Gotcha.

    • Ronin

They changed it at 4th edition and I think the blue, gold, and black look way cooler and less tacky. When I saw the new scheme, I went home and updated it to match. I think that’s just the retconned colors now since even the Horus Heresy stuff has them depicted in today’s scheme.

        Thanks Ronin.

Thanks Carlisimo, the scheme does look tacky there, but I like the picture above for some reason, lol.

They are the primary poster boys…

Ah, the old “paint factory explosion” days! You should have seen the Orks in their multi-color glory.
