Cygnar Stormsmith Grenadiers say ZZAP!

Can you say electric grenades? The new Cygnar Stormsmith Grenadiers are out. Check out these AOE throwing zap dudes!

What Is It?

A new unit for the swan faction. You get a 3 model unit for 7 points. They have a field allowance of 2. They are basically a support unit with electric based attacks/effects.

What do Stormsmith Grenadiers Do?

These guys have some pretty average stats. SPD6 MAT5 RAT6 DEF13 and ARM11 is nothing to be excited about. That DEF13 is helped out by force barrier making the grenadiers DEF15 immune to blast from ranged attacks.

They are armed with a POW7 melee attack which you probably are not going to want to use very often…

What these guys are all about is grenade throwing with RNG6 AOE3 POW13. Every time the grenadier throws a grenade you can pick 1 of the following:

  • Galvanic Blast Field: Direct hits on enemies leave a 3″ AOE that does a POW 10 to models entering/ending in it. This could be useful for some choke points when infantry clogs up.
  • Kinetic Grip: Models hit are -2 SPD for 1 round. Really nasty on heavies or bunched up enemies. Slowing a colossal/gargantuan down is a pretty big deal.
  • Voltaic Vortex: Direct hit on enemy pushes models within 2″ towards the model hit. Mini hellmouths that only work on enemies. If you can live the dream you could use a jamming enemy model to pull your heavies towards the enemygrenadiers cygn

Synergies With:

These guys do electric damage so a Firefly or a Stormstrider ups their potency. The Firefly ups the POW to 15 which is legitamate damage with its electric damage buff. A Stormstrider or ranger makes these guys RAT8 with their RAT buff, which is also pretty decent.
A snipe caster can make the most out of the grenadiers. With only a RNG 6 and SPD6 they have a pretty short threat. Snipe can really up that to where you might get more then 1 turn out of these models.

Lists with Stormsmith Grenadiers:

This lists brings the electricity! Dynamo with snipe combined with the Stormstrider and ranger buffs is not going to miss much. Throw in the Firefly for Dynamo to light up almost any heavy for crazy electric damage.
The Grenadiers can slow down threats, giving Dynamo more time to carve out the enemies heavies. Outside ARM18+ Caine and the Stormstrider can clear any infantry coming up the field. Throw in some blurred Stormguard to hold the zone.

Revenant’s Opinion:

The grenadiers are a litte pricey at 7 for only 3 1box models. However, I do love the SPD slow grenade and think it could be really impactful in a game. I give them a C grade, if they were a little longer range I would be more excited to field them.

    Grenades are still an area I feel like PP struggles to define. They never really pack the oomph you feel like they should, and the range always seems ridiculously short.

    I’m sure someone will come up with some nice combo soon enough.

      Haley1 has some game with them. In temporal barrier SPD4 stuffs are slowed to a crawl (0″ move, 0″ run), plus, they’re technically RAT 8.
      I cannot fathom, why didn’t they try to borrow a Trencher rifle from a grenadier to test is their charge fits into the barrel…
