The fabled sequel is coming to the page in a 12 part series next year.

Frank Oz and Jim Henson planned a sequel for the 1982 fantasy film, but it never got made. The Power of the Dark Crystal – a 12 part series from Boom! Studios – will tell that story. The series is written by screenwriters David Odell, Annette Odell, and Craig Pearce – all were on the initial film project before making it to this form.

The series is set decades after events of 1982’s The Dark Crystal, with Jen and Kira distracted by the pressures of ruling Thra and no longer in touch with the needs of the people — which provokes a Fireling called Thurma to set out to steal a shard of the Dark Crystal with which she intends to restore power to her realm. Unfortunately, that mission might also restore the Skeksis, as well…

The first issue is due out February 15 of next year in both print and digital formats.

Boom! shared the first issue’s cover art…
