The rules for the new plastic Canoness Veridyan are here and raise big questions.

“Codex: Adepta Sororitas OR Codex: Imperial Agents….”

…. wait….

.. does that mean there’s a separate book coming ?

A Stand-alone Sororitas Codex?

That wording is VERY INTERESTING.

I think we can now assume that a separate Codex: Adepta Sororitas is coming, which would give us 3 ways to field an Ecclesiarcy force on the tabletop.  Here are three things to note about this week’s Codex Imperial Agents:

  • All the photography is of older existing metal minis. GW would usually highlight new plastic models in an army’s codex.
  • St. Celestine is missing. GW pretty much doesn’t erase existing special characters in the “modern era” She may be saved for a full sisters codex.
  • There is no “classic decurion” style detachment for the Sororitas in Imperial Agents.  I would expect it to show up in a full standalone codex.

Making a grand return in January?

~ Get ready – I assume the new Adepta Sororitas are coming back with a vengeance these next couple of months.

  • piglette

    Pretty cool and fluffy.

  • Sam Nolton

3 Ways to field an ecclisiarchy force? 1. Sisters Codex and 2. Imperial Agents….what’s the 3rd?

    • 301stFeinminsterArmoured

Sisters Codex, Ecclesiarchy Delegation, and Inquisitorial Warband.

      • Sam Nolton

Oh so 1 codex and 2 formations/detachments in Imperial Agents book then?

        • 301stFeinminsterArmoured

          Basically.

  • 301stFeinminsterArmoured

    *cough* Vect *cough*

    • rtheom

Maybe he will make an appearance in the Sororitas codex too? :p

      • 301stFeinminsterArmoured

Remember: they aren’t nuns, per se, they’re college girls.

        • Iconoc1ast

Then that is where we find Vect….

    • Christian Zajac

      *cough* Marbo-Bastonne-Al’Rahem-Chenkov-Kamir *cough*

  • memitchell

Isn’t the Codex: Adepta Sororitas the current eBook codex? It’s description says, “The rules in this eBook are also available in Codex: Imperial Agents, fully revised and updated along with new detachments plus rules for adding even more servants of the Emperor to your army.”

    • orionburn

That’s what I was thinking. Couldn’t that just refer to the old dex? I’m not a Sisters player but would like to see them make a big comeback, so I hope this does point to new dex on the horizon. I would love to see them in the 8th edition boxed set. Slim chance, but would be cool.

    • ZeeLobby

Exactly this. The codex exists. It’s already out there!

      • Cosmic_Seth

Sadly, I think you’re right, where they’ll just ‘update’ the digital dex. But I hope I’m wrong :_(

      • Munn

Being able to keep using codex adepta sororitas over imperial abortion is only a half step down from plastic sisters

        • ZeeLobby

Haha. I’d say it’s a cliff fall. New sisters codex would have been sweet.

    • Alex Simmonds

yup – The miniature is Resin too, not plastic.

    • Irrational exuberance rears it’s ugly head again.

  • Severius_Tolluck

As I got in several heated arguments we all came to the conclusion as they did with the space wolves having multiple entries of the same things, you have to choose one. So you can run the current digital codex, or the ones out of imperial agents, and imperial agents just allows goofy formations to get a bit of flavor to other imperial armies without going full blown ally.

  • Severius_Tolluck

on a separate note though.. her making everyone basically snipers is ludicrous!

    • Munn

Works on vehicles too. Exorcists got even better. Still pretty expensive for how bad of a body she is though…

      • Severius_Tolluck

Yeah well they were too true to Blanche and his sketch style and obsession with weird shaped heels. I kinda like it though. She has attitude for sure. Awesome to use that on anything.

        • Munn

Oh no I meant her ‘body’ as in her physical presence in the game in terms of damage output, and defenses.

          • Severius_Tolluck

True, I guess they are weighing her support ability above all else. I mean compared to a normal canoness cost she is slightly more expensive but not by much. Problem is can’t equip her with any relics or gear so big issue there. I just don’t think GW has a proper algorithm anymore to weigh cost.
Precision shots to everything in 12 inches is mighty powerful though. I mean you can start knocking out your opponents special weapons and sgts pretty quick!

          • Djbz

Considering that she’s only paying 5/10 points for it it’s a great rule.
(65 for base Cannoness + 10/15 for the power sword)
Sure no rosarius for her, but theres loads of strength 6 weapons that’d instant death her that don’t pierce her armour anyway so leaving her relativly cheap (and simply have enough underlings to protect her) would be best.

          • Sloordrigg Metselverk

Protecting her is kinda difficult, though. Shedoesn’t have the Independent Character rule, so she can’t join a unit herself. The enemy can snipe her without having precision shots. Though I guess you could add Inquisitors or somesuch, though. Her own entourage of drooling men.

          • Djbz

She does have the independant character rule.
It’s right there on the picture, under Act of Faith and above Martyrdom

          • Sloordrigg Metselverk

How did I miss that? I need more coffee!

  • deathdealerdan64

I want bad *ss biker *ic*! Bikes Bikes BIKES!

    • Severius_Tolluck

yes would be awesome. Kinda like FAKK in Heavy Metal. Nah, wait that would be less tasteful. In anycase I do like the imperial bikes from wargame exclusive, if they did a less sexualized but BA pose like the stopping and firing pistol than we have a winner!

      • deathdealerdan64

Tasteful! MY sisters army was called The imperial cloister of the unhealing wound.

        • rtheom

          -_-

        • Iconoc1ast

          Hahahahahahaha😂

    • Sisters on Bikes? Oh Jees, please don’t tempt me starting yet another army.

      • deathdealerdan64

you want no need a new army

    • Reven

We need celestians in relic armor with bikes and power lances so we can have pseudo knightly nonsense lol.

      • deathdealerdan64

your nuts twin-link flamers and H.flames on attack bikes.

        • Reven

          They can have those too

    • Neal Laxman

Have sisters ever had bikes, I don’t recall them but then again I am fallible…

      • deathdealerdan64

        no

        • Iconoc1ast

          Would be awesome though…..

          • Neal Laxman

Yeah awesome, biker chicks and all that.

But sisters have always been perceived as lady space marines but weaker. If we give them all the tools of the SM then i would be disappointed.

          • Iconoc1ast

Yeah. To be honest i would love for them to make a comeback. Even if it was the same units as before. Just need them to be more affordable than they currently are. The original models are so good, even now they still hold up pretty well but we all know they could be even better plus i am still a recovering plastic crack addict. My long overdue coven is slowly building…. http://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/133edb3d60188bff4295d4cf374ef028beba70abadce5362ecab089ad8d5eb5d.jpg better

  • Red_Five_Standing_By

They are likely dumping the old model of Celestine in order to give us a new plastic one. They are likely dumping their stock of old metal Sisters for the same reason.

    • Which… would be a good thing.

      • Red_Five_Standing_By

Exactly. Which is why I find it funny that people are complaining that GW is not releasing more new SoB models with this codex.

    • Munn

I would offer a blood sacrifice for you to be correct my friend. It’s looking shaky at the moment but I guess all hope isn’t truly lost.

      • Red_Five_Standing_By

It just seems like a logical next step. Build up interest then have a Grey Knight or Deathwatch scale release.

        We really only need…

        Basic Sisters
Basic Sisters + Special Weapons Sprue
Basic Sisters + Heavy Weapons Sprue
        Jump Pack Sisters
        Immolator/Exorcist
        Penitent Engine
        Sisters Repentia
        Named Character HQ
        Generic HQ

So really that’s 4 new kits + three Upgrade Sprues + HQ choices

        • Neal Laxman

It would be cool if they did the priests, preachers, missionaries and militia for some alternative army builds.

    • DeadlyYellow

If they really wanted to move that product they’d just mark it LCtB.

  • silashand

Hate the stupid one use per game Acts of Faith. Oh gee, I gain Hatred for one whole turn with a S3/T3 model. Awesome… :/

    • memitchell

It’s not just “Hatred for one whole turn.”

It’s called “The Passion.” Which gives Hatred for one whole turn.

It’s like calling Chicken McNuggets, the #12 Combo Meal. And, the #12 Combo Meal comes with only Chicken McNuggets. No way is 40K bloated in any way.

      • rtheom

Well, the fluff title giving the ability isn’t so bad, because “The Passion” by itself has no inherent rules. The problem is when Hatred would then say “A model with Hatred has Counter Attack and Revenge.” Because now you need to look up those two rules that could have very easily just had their text included in Hatred for the same effect.
(I know that’s not what Hatred really does, I’m just making an example. :p )

    • Mike X (Official)

You hate variable tactics? Because that’s what Acts of Faith offer.

      • silashand

At one use per game, no they do not offer that, particularly when they are not guaranteed to happen.

        • Mike X (Official)

You only get 5-7 turns in a game…

  • Defenestratus

GW does invalidate existing special characters all the time.

    Vect.
    Nyandu Fireheart.

    • rtheom

Vect, yeah, but who is that second dude? Wasn’t that the blue guy in Guardian’s of the Galaxy?

    • Reven

Weren’t both of those before the new CEO?

    • Red_Five_Standing_By

Vect was pulled, as I understand it, because the sculptor had a sweet deal with GW where the got a cut of each sale. GW got tired of paying him and so pulled the model.

      • Neal Laxman

Oh wow that’s a crazy contract for GW to accept!

        • Red_Five_Standing_By

They were being friendly with their artists, which is reasonable but… Yeah, it is not a good deal when you sell the same model for 10 years.

          • rtheom

Or when your company expands well beyond the “5 guys in a garage hiring their friends” status.

          • Severius_Tolluck

What’s more puzzling is why didn’t anyone update the model after so long…

          • Red_Five_Standing_By

Costs money for a low volume named HQ character.

  • Janis!

New Sisters Codes just before a complete revamp of the rules… where have I seen this before…

    • georgelabour

      Imperial Knights?

      • Janis!

2nd edition: They hyped up sisters of battle then in like 3 months 3rd edition hit making the previous codex void.

        • Severius_Tolluck

          more like 9 months… but who counts…

    • Red_Five_Standing_By

Who says the codex is coming out before the new edition?

      • Munn

There are 3 sets of rumors. One says Jan/Feb, one says one of the first 2-3 codexes of 8th, one says never, they haven’t even started working on the models yet.

        • Red_Five_Standing_By

          Who knows.

I hope codexes are invalidated for the new edition and GW starts over from scratch.

  • Nikita Kuznetsov

What the hell is “She has the HQ Battlefield Role”?

    • Iconoc1ast

It refers to the force organisation chart?

      • Nikita Kuznetsov

No, it is a clearly different wording. Some new (incoming) rules I think.

    • Red_Five_Standing_By

It sounds like GW is prepping for AoS style Force Organization Chart. In AoS they have different names for different FOC slots (Artillery, Behemoth, Leader, Battleline (i.e. troop), etc.).

      • Carey_Mahoney

Yep, that’s my guess, too. They pave the way for 8th ed. rules.

        • Red_Five_Standing_By

HQ Role, Elite Role, Troops Role, Fast Attack Role, Heavy Support Role?

          Probably more delineated.

HQ, Troops, Flyers, Artillery, Behemoths, Transports, Super-Heavies… Cavalry? Most things can be left untyped (as in AoS).

          • Carey_Mahoney

Well… on the other hand, the wording might just as well have been used because the rule snippet above is out of context from a Codex or something alike. Come to think of it, that makes even more sense.

      • generalchaos34

I noticed that same thing in the Deathwatch codex actually, A heavy heavy wording on things with the “troops” “elites” “HQ” etc battlefield roles. I thought then it was something coming, and it looks that way even more so now.

        • Karru

Or it could be that people seem to completely ignore page 119 in the rulebook. Battlefield roles are what we consider “CAD Choices”. A Unit of Tactical Marines in a CAD has the Troops Battlefield Role as is stated by the rulebook.

GW don’t really use that term in their books. It’s only mentioned in the rulebook, most likely due to it being irrelevant term since everyone just calls them troops or elites for short.

So no, this is definitely not some “sneak peek” at 8th edition. It’s just some new wording that GW uses.

          • Red_Five_Standing_By

They have only recently started using that phrasing again.

            That means something

          • Mira Bella

It means that they are highly inconsistend with almost anything they do.
            Just as usual.

          • winterman

It means her rules lacks the 7ed format for datasheet, where the role of a unit is found as a symbol (along with a faction symbol and such) at the top of the datasheet. In otherwords it is likely an artifact of her rules being printed on her instructions rather than a full color page in a book or pdf. I believe but cannot confirm that this was also the case for the new bloodthirster and some other models.

          • TenDM

There are also rules that use battlefield roles, so even when using Formations it’s important to specify which role a unit has.
I think making predictions based on it is reading too far into nothing, but if anything it would probably indicate that they’ve started being more thorough with their wording. Calling it a HQ choice doesn’t work any more because it’s not always going to be chosen as a HQ.

    • Djbz

Look at page 119 of the 40k rulebook

      • rtheom

Yeah, it has been used before, but I think this is one of the first times they’ve made that wording so prominent. It could just be a fluke though.

      • Iconoc1ast

I pnly have the mini 6th ed rules 😭

      • gordonshumway

        This.

    • gordonshumway

Are you joking or…? HQ is a battlefield role as defined in the rulebook…it is quite common. Almost all factions have them. I’ll forgive you if you play only Harlequins or something I guess.

      • Red_Five_Standing_By

No they still have Elite, Troops, Fast Attack and Heavy

        • gordonshumway

I don’t understand what you are saying to me. I was making the point that if he hadn’t heard of the HQ battlefield role maybe he plays Harlequins. And you responded by disagreeing with me and just listing all the roles in the Harlequins faction? Yes. They do not have HQ. My whole point.

  • Alex Simmonds

Plastic? I thought She was resin. Also, currently the only way to use sisters is with Codex: Adepta Sororitas, which is a digital codex that is STILL available. So nothing new here…

    • Red_Five_Standing_By

I thought it was called Codex: Sisters of Battle… Drat!

  • OldHat

Hope this shuts up a lot of the folks who lamented the Imperial Agents Codex as somehow a replacement for a proper Sisters Codex. Hopefully, this helps cement the fact they are not one in the same.

    • Djbz

The most significant part in my mind is the bit that says she can be used in place of a cannoness in formations.
Formations that (apart from the apocalypse only ones in the digital codex) they don’t currently have……

    • gordonshumway

Why would it? Nothing here says a new codex is coming. At all. This is simply BoLS’s poor reading skills on parade.

      • Karru

You missed a nice discussion about some folks believing that Codex: Imperial Agents was the exact same thing as Codex: Adepta Sororitas and Codex: Inquisition because they happened to have the same units. To them, this meant that those books were replaced by the Imperial Agents book.

        • Catherine Poirier

The fact this codex replaced the digital one was confirmed by the official Warhammer 40k page on facebook. It was only recently denied by GW. Thats why people said so. Also, for now this book does replace the inquisition one for all we know.

      • OldHat

Because there is a rumored plastic release which, no doubt, would have a new Codex, much like all the recent releases. They wouldn’t do a whole new line of toys without fresh rules.

  • deathdealerdan64

Sisters of battle. The “meta” behind Deathwatch is so everyone can play a different Space Marine in a RPG. So do you need a excuse to put 5 different sister together in a Rpg? What about a specal mini for a non militant sister.

    • Severius_Tolluck

They had two, the dialogus, and the hospitaler

      • deathdealerdan64

I’m thinking along the lines of a tecmarine or apothecary

        • Severius_Tolluck

Well they certainly do not have anyone in charge of weapons or tech, so that is nice. However the hospitlar can easily be switched to do what what an apothecary does.

          • deathdealerdan64

Perhaps a Dialogist can bring down the full fury of a Imperial audit upon the enemy Idk.

  • gordonshumway

    No.

It in NO way means that there is a new codex coming. Look at the “Special Rules” column…it is simply telling you that definitions of those special rules can be found in the Codex: Adepta Sororitas or the new Codex: Imperial Agents. Which is true. The simple, logical conclusion when you read that line.

They have made it pretty clear they are passing on “new” sisters with this CIA release I think.

    • Damien Coté

Oh man… I just realized (thanks to you) that the “Codex; Imperial Agents” acronym is CIA… well played GW… well played

  • TenDM

I think we’ve reached the point where GW could literally make a video saying ‘No more Sisters ever, no Sisters of Battle Codex is ever coming and we hate Sisters and anyone who plays them’ and the would take that as confirmation that a new Adepta Sororitas release will be out next month.

I’m not saying it can’t happen, but this is seeing what you want to see. The sheet references Codex: Adeptas Sororitas because it’s still a valid book and they don’t want people making a ‘you can’t use the Iyanden Supplement because the new book is Codex: Craftworld’s not Codex: Eldar’ style mistake. That’s as deep as it goes.

    • Catherine Poirier

In fact as a Sister player I would appreciate this transparency from GW. That way I could get through the normal stage of grief. For the moment its like having a relative in a coma state, and he recently opened his eyes for a brief moment.

  • MechBattler

WOW. She just gives Precision Shots to any Sisters units within 12″ of her? That’s pretty badass actually. Considering how cheap a squad of them is, that could mean picking off a LOT of specific targets with simple bolters.

  • Arthfael

That a codex was coming in January was my understanding, and our last hope of seeing the officially announced then not released plastic sisters. But as in all things regarding SoB, it’s not happened until it’s happened.

  • Mike X (Official)

    How many points is she?

  • Moonsaves

Think I’ve spotted the loose thread. It says she can be used as a standard Canoness in any formations. She’s currently included in… no formations.

  • kevinharoun

A separate Codex: Adepta Sororitas already exists.

All this is doing is telling you the two, already existing, places you can find the definition for faction specific Special Rules.

  • MechBattler

No interest or demand my foot. The Canoness went out of stock before the release date, and she isn’t even a Limited model. You KNOW people want it bad when that happens.

  • Muninwing

i was actually hoping that there’d be a difference in wording here… that “shield of faith” or “act of faith” or ‘Martyrdom” would have been similar to something that currently exists, but would point toward a new rule or a new idea.

i know people really want plastic sisters. i get it. i would easily drop $200 on them at debut if they came out as we imagine them in our wildest dreams. but i still think the trashcan comments were jokes, not hints.

and i won’t stop feeling like that until there’s a hint that couldn’t just be a product of wishful thinking.

  • Bulvi Nightbane

I have heard of a new sisters codex from my GW sources, but BOLS posts suggesting it will be in January or even just the next few months are wishful thinking. Summer release is much more likely, and that only if GW even decides to follow through (sometimes GW will get as far as having production level models of something and still decide to scrap it). GW needs things to sell well. Some returned armies like the deathwatch and genestealer cults have been best sellers. Others like the new Thousand Sons have fallen well short of that level, which may make GW hesitant to give the sisters a full reboot. Those wanting the return of sisters should have a little hope now though, the new canoness selling out so rapidly may make GW more confident in their popularity.

  • Yuri.. Forever, Hentai never<3

“Full details of THIS MODELS rules can be found in AS codex or IA codex” (quite specific)
This looks there will be a full 8th Sororitas codex will be out later & at the moment they are trying to get rid of the metals by putting them in batch boxes.. Which some such as dominion squad &retributor squad packs aren’t even the best models to use (H.Bolters for Retributors and all meltagun for Dominions are prolly best tbh)

    • Reven

4 Heavy Flamers jumping out of a rhino can be nice. Also can always break them up for use in normal sister squads. Though I wouldn’t really use the Multimeltas ever :/
