A Princess Bride RPG? That seems…conceivable. Given that Toy Vault just announced it, I’d say it’s more than conceivable. Maybe INconceivable.

It’s like when you’re more ingenius–or infamous. I’m pretty sure that that word means what I think it means.
Enough of that though. What do the fine folks at Toy Vault have to say about this game, is it everything it seems?

“Coming in 2017!
Explore the world of The Princess Bride with our new role-playing game! Fezzik, Inigo, Westley, and Buttercup are coming to your tabletop this year. The Princess Bride rpg is designed by Steffan O’Sullivan, the designer of classic RPG titles such as GURPS: Swashbucklers, GURPS: Bunnies and Burrows, and of course FUDGE. The Princess Bride rpg, is using Steffan’s FUDGE system. FUDGE is a great, light RPG engine that provides just the right feel of light-hearted, fantastic adventure that embodies The Princess Bride universe.”

It’ll be interesting to see how this turns out. Fudge is a tricky system, without a doubt. The different kinds of stories it can tell, it doesn’t always handle very well. There’s nothing quite like rolling fours, only to find your luck has run it’s course.

Okay, seriously though, that’s enough rhyming. FUDGE is a system that uses four dice. Which more often than not are not very nice. (quit it) They’ll roll plus or minus (mostly minus) and all in all the system is light. So light that I’m not sure how well-suited that system is to handling the kinds of swashbuckling adventure that you’d want to tell in the Princess Bride. Or indeed, what kind of stories you’d want to tell. There’s the big one, to be sure–but thinking about it, there’s enough odd little details to play off of. Like what was happening over in Greenland, when Fezzik was unemployed. Or what is life like as one of Humperdinck’s brute squad?

It could have a legs. We’ll see. I’d like to hope that they put more effort into something like this than just cashing in on the excitement of something recognizable (I’m looking at you, Diablo the Tabletop RPG). I have serious reservations. Definitely a wait and see kind of thing, but who knows, maybe a little effort’s just what a game like this needs.

Without more info we’re in the weeds.
