Circle of Orboros: Una the Skyhunter Rules the Air

Una2 is officially out. She already had a legacy of tournament victories. Here’s why.

Who is She?

This is the official PP release of the grown up Una. She has been pre-released for quite awhile now. She already has been to the mountain top as the Queen of Circle Warlocks but, PP has hit her in the junk with a big nerf to her feat. She still has a serious toolbox but, it definitely is toned down a lot.

What Made Una2 so Nasty?

Una created a nasty play experience by her battlegroup doing one of 2 things by using her feat. Jamming and waiting or no risk on piece trading.

Her Old Feat:

Before the errata her old feat made the Griffons un-targetable by melee attacks during your opponents turn. This meant for very little counter-play by the enemy player. The Griffons already outreached most armies with the Feat and high base speeds. So, this usually turned into 2 turns of Griffons chewing on your models before you had a chance to do anything to them. Very few things had much hope outside sprays, knockdown feats, or non-targeted attacks like Nemo.

Una could run her Griffons deep into enemy lines if she couldn’t get the alpha, and just wait till the next turn to start swinging.

Her New Feat:

The errata tamed her quite a bit and enemies can now swing at the Griffons in their turn. It drastically toned down her board dominance. She still can virtually ignore free strikes with the feat but, that isn’t nearly as bad as not being able to do anything.

Una2’s Spell List:

Una2 is still strong even now her feat is a little more tame.

  • Hand of Fate: This spell can do magical things in a faction like circle. Many units circle has can hit multiple targets or have multiple attacks on each model that the value of Hand of Fate output generates is exponential. Models like the Sentry Stone, Tharn Wolf Riders with assault, or Reeves can get MAX VALUE out of their attacks
  • Mirage: A threat extender is nasty in a list that is already great at speed. If you can land a hunters mark, a Mirage Stalker can threaten 15″ away. That is scary fast.
  • Wind Wall: If your opponent can’t get magic guns your army’s important models can walk up the field with little fear or ranged reprisal

Una2 List – Post Nerf:

This Una2 list relies on getting deep into the enemy lines and causing big damage. The Mist Riders can murder infantry in droves with Hand of Fate on them. And what Una2 list would be complete with out a stable of Scarsfell Griffons.

Circle Army – 75 / 75 points

(Una 2) Una the Skyhunter [+29]
– Feral Warpwolf [18]
– Scarsfell Griffon [8]
– Scarsfell Griffon [8]

Revenant’s Final Thought:

Una2 has already had her hayday and is now in a more reasonable state. She might not be as popular as Wurmwood post errata but, she still is a fun circle caster to play.

B+

What do you think of Una2 in her current version? Have any horror stories of griffons in your face during the old feat? Please share in the comments below BoLS.

She’s definitely still strong. I think the biggest reason you won’t see her that often is just because the units she takes just aren’t that great with other casters. You’re putting a pretty high cost investment in griffons that you won’t really use elsewhere.

    • Red_Five_Standing_By

At least the griffins look cool on the table.

      • ZeeLobby

Oh no doubt. And I’ve definitely played with one or two on other casters, but I would have never ran her spam list in the first place, having to buy 5+ of them.

        • Red_Five_Standing_By

Yeah… 5 of anything is highly specialized in this game.

          • mathhammer

my 10 shredders are hurt by this comment….

          • ZeeLobby

Haha. And I’m not overly offended by spam, it’s just part of the game. It just happens that usually when spam makes it to higher levels in the competitive scene, it’s because there’s some abuse somewhere.

    • marxlives

I agree, she is still strong, she is just not an automatic win button, which is not how the game is intended to be played period.

      • ZeeLobby

        true

  • Nvision

Privateer need to chill on pumping out casters and warlocks that just promote more spam. Yeah, yeah, it sells more models, we get that, but it makes for a boring competitive play experience. I can’t tell you how many Griffon/Marauder spam lists I saw at the OTC (oh, and honourable mention to Rocketeers). Once again, I lamely cry for FA3 on all ‘jacks and ‘beasts… Power-up was a great idea to balance Warmachine resource generation with Hordes, but it broke the game in other ways.

    • ZeeLobby

I mean they need to readdress the costs of all warjacks vs warbeasts. Warbeasts are pretty weak by comparison. I just think power up with point reduction was too strong.

      • Red_Five_Standing_By

Totally. Then again, PP did not have good balance last edition, where Warbeasts were better than Warjacks.

      • Nvision

It feels like power up was a direct reaction to both warbeast efficiency and infantry skew. Making relatively low Focus ‘casters able to support a sizable battle group AND still cast a spell of two is great, but they should have foreseen how it would be exploited by douchey players. I play Khador and anything ARM 20 with 34 boxes should not cost a little as some of these jacks do.

I agree with the imbalance between beasts and jacks now. There’s a decided reduction in Hordes players in our meta.

It’s almost like they had two project leads for Mk3 who had different design goals.
