Like the Kharadron Overlords but want a slightly different theme? Check out our wacky ideas for them!

The new Kharadron Overlords army is just fantastic for all the right reasons. Here at BoLS we can’t wait to see what the community does once they get their hands on the models. The themes and style of the Overlords is ripe with awesome ideas to pull from. Because of that we all got to thinking, “what would be some crazy-awesome themed armies you could create using the Kharadron Overlord rules/models?” So here are our Top 5 picks for Themed Forces you could create using the Kharadron Overlords!

Pirates of the Caribbean

This one is, by far, the most obvious. I mean, Dwarf Sky-Pirates!!! C’mon, that would be awesome. You could easily build a themed force around The “Black Pearl” a cursed sky-ship Captained by none other than the legendary privateer Sky-Captain Jack Sparrow. But that’s not all – there are 5 movies to pull ideas from (and probably more on the way). This is a franchise that just keeps giving which is great for all your swash-buckling adventures…in the SKY!

House Harkonnen

Yeah, we’re going there. It’s 1984, David Lynch has the biggest budget of his career and he’s going to spend it. So what does he do? He creates the “Floating Fat-Man” live on screen for our viewing “pleasure” – and as creepy as it was back then, it still kind of works! When I first saw the Kharadron had floating troops and heroes my mind when straight back to Dune. But there, in the spaces I can’t bare to look, the Baron was there, staring back at me!

Okay, melodrama aside – the floating units seriously made be think of House Harkonnen from Dune (1984). I mean, yeah the Kharadron Overlords are supposed to be forces of Order or “Good Guys” but replace Aether-Gold with Spice and the fact that the Gold “attracts monsters” and BOOM…it’s all starting to make sense. The Gold Must Flow

Hawkmen from Flash Gordon

Lots of folks noticed how the Fyreslayers came out they had some similarities to the Hawkmen from Flash Gordon. Maybe it was their crested-helms, their (mostly) bare chests, or maybe it was just their fiery personalities. But now you can actually BUILD this army using the Kharadron Overlord rules. And if you’re a person who LOVES conversion, then this army is ready for you to create it! I’d suggest starting with some Fyreslayers and then Blood Angels Sanguinary Guard Wings. But I’ll leave that up to you, you crazy hobbyist! That’s why this is a theme force after-all.

Time Bandits

Who doesn’t love the idea of a rag-tag group of misfits hopping around time stealing treasure!? Replace “time” with the Mortal Realms and treasure with “Aether-Gold” and you’re almost there. Conversion-wise you could do some fun things with the different GW ranges – I’ll let you think on that one for a bit. What if these Bandits had their own Air-Ship? What if there was a fleet of them? Now you’re starting to get it…

Castle in the Sky (1986)

This is another classic from Miyazaki and if you haven’t seen it – well, you should make some to watch it just because. Aside from that, it’s all about flying ships and a castle and it’s a ton of fun. Basically two kids are trying to find a floating castle from a lost civilization. All the while they are being chased by government agents and pirates – and a lot of the action takes them through/on various flying machines. If nothing else this movie will at least help you come up with some cool inspiration to do your Kharadron Overlords proud!

Bonus: Squats!

This is a concept Sketch by Jes Goodwin supposedly of the Demiurg Race. The Demiurg were rumored to be part of the Tau Empire – we’ve even seen their Space Ships. But looking at the Kharadron Overlord models and this concept art – it’s making me think that plans changed and they got ported over to AoS. I’ll let you be the judge. But for now, if you’re itching to play them as Squats, it’s currently possible. Go nuts!

What crazy theme force would be your dream army for the Kharadron Overlords?
