Geekery: The Last Jedi Trailer has Arrived

It’s been a few months since the name of the movie was released. This morning Star Wars Celebration delivered the first look at the next installment of Rey’s story…

There is a ton to digest there – new worlds, new speeders, a giant space battle, and some big hints about Rey’s abilities. Luke’s ominous last line confirms some suspicions, but creates a lot of questions. What does that mean for the franchise that’s focused its plots around the battle between the great evil of the Sith and the hope of the Jedi?

It looks like Rian Johnson – like Gareth Edwards – has really stepped up to the challenge of making a grand scale Star Wars movie. It’s certainly very pretty. David Lean and Freddie Young‘s influence on the look of the franchise is still evident 8 movies later.

This trailer is filled with action and spectacular wide shots that LucasArts has become adept at creating. And there’s a reason for that – they’ve used IMAX cameras for on location shoots on both Episode VII and VIII. They used Ultra Panavision 70 lenses with Arri Alexa 65 cameras on Rogue One to accomplish the same sort of feeling.
