40K: Fan Animates “Helsreach” – It’s Awesome!

Richard Boylan shows off some impressive skills with an amazingly animated look at “Helsreach” – you gotta see this!

Helsreach is a novel in the Space Marine Battles series written by Aaron Dembski-Bowden. It covers the story of the World of Armageddon and in particular the defense of Hive Helsreach by the Black Templars Space Marine Chapter. It’s a pretty action-packed novel and it’s worth a read if you’re looking for some classic Marine vs Ork combat.

However, that’s just setting the stage because one fan of the book also happens to be a pretty amazing animator. Richard Boylan has put together a very impressive animated “series” of the conflict. As of writing this, he currently has 3 videos up with more on the way. And get this, it’s not just beautifully animated, he also used some of the narration from the audiobook to add that extra grim-dark feel – and it works perfectly!

Helsreach Part 1: Prologue

Helsreach Part 2

Helsreach Part 3

I am digging the style for sure. The transitions and fluid and straight up entrancing at parts and that’s because it’s that charcoal/black marker style. I can’t get enough of it! Richard, keep up the awesome work!

Side note: As a child of the 80’s I had an “Aha” moment when watching the video. The style reminded me of a certain pop song from that era so on a whim I muted the audio from Helsreach video and played it in the back ground.

It works. It works SOOOOO well.

Thank you Richard Boylan for brightening my day and creating this awesome work – we’ll be keeping tabs on the series if more show up!

Loved the art style! The Audio really helps sell the art too.

I did the “Aha” thing and couldn’t stop being amazed. Thanks for sharing.

To be fair, its just G-Mod with Space Marine assets and a filter.

  • SilentPony

I’d watch an entire TV show like that

  • AregonAlmighty

imagine if GW did this to their books

    • Crevab

First Chaos: Demons codex was pretty close

    • Camoron

they’d probably only charge $150 per book then /eyeroll

  • zeno666

Neat. My eyes grew tired after a couple of minutes though. And I can hear the Emperor (Star Wars) in the voice over 😛

    • euansmith

I could have done without the camera shake. It didn’t really add anything to the otherwise excellent visuals, and gave me flashbacks to to the ague-cam fetish of poor old Tony Scott.

  • euansmith

That is cool. I can’t help but think that GW might wax wrath over the use of their audio book.

Outstanding work!!! And that was funny bringing up that classic 80s “Take Me On” video. Haw haw!!

  • Iconoc1ast

If GW do not employ this person they have lost out big time.

I have just watched the prologue and i am blown away… http://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/1467a5ce966c66952b52841b31198990e0495100f8a515f555470e172e6b31f0.gif

Apparently I now need a Black Templar army. Who knew?

  • Talos2

Impressive, but I’m surprised it’s not just got a cease and desist from gw as they’re just putting an audiobook online for free ultimately

    • Loki Nahat

I don’t think they’re persuing anything related to infringement for the galaxy that was, after all it’s not the new setting, they’re not particularly interested

      • Talos2

40k is just moving on, it’s not ending and starting again as with wfb and aos, old fluff is still relevent. It’s a current bl novel, so it wouldn’t be a big surprise.

        • Loki Nahat

You’ve obviously not been following the Gathering Storm debacle.

The galaxy that was is no more.

They’re even bringing numarines(read: stormcast) as replacements
