War is about to Dawn on an operating system near you.

It is an objective fact that the PC is the best platform for playing video games. And soon, no matter your operating system, you’ll be able to play Dawn of War III thanks to the efforts of Relic Entertainment and Feral Interactive.

If you have somehow never played a Dawn of War game before–they are a fast-paced RTS that is a descendant of the old Company of Heroes games that take a nontraditional approach to resource gathering/control and base construction. And Dawn of War III really brings out the detail and the life and vibrant character (and humor) of the 40K world. Whether it’s taking an elite unit and stomping (sometimes literally) on your enemy, or gathering up a mob of boyz, a cadre of marines, or a smug of aspect warriors and wrecking face, it’s a ton of fun.

We’re excited to announce that we’ve partnered with the team at Feral Interactive to bring Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III to Mac and Linux platforms! Feral helped out with the Mac and Linux ports of Dawn of War II and Company of Heroes 2, and we couldn’t be happier for them to help bring Dawn of War III to a brand new audience.

Dawn of War III will launch on Mac and Linux in just a few short weeks, on June 8th, 2017. Now all players will be able to do battle as the Space Marines, Eldar, and Orks in an epic campaign, and spectacular multiplayer matches against players around the world.

All content from the Windows version is in the Mac & Linux versions

And if you head over to their FAQ you can learn a little more about the upcoming release, like the fact that they’re offering cross-platform multiplayer, even though it will only be for Mac.Linux at the outset. It sounds like they’re hoping to figure out cross-OS play for all three in the future. Or that if you have the Steam version of the game, you’ll get access to the other versions as soon as it’s available on June 8th.

Hmm. Orks, Eldar, Space Marines… Mac, Linux, Windows. Yup, story checks out.

That’s pretty cool. I’m excited for a future where I don’t have to use Windows on my gaming rig. If that ever comes.

    • I already do live that future with Steam, though I have to admit the range of games is still limited.

      • ZeeLobby

Yeah. I’ve tried that. But like you said, you basically miss out on 4/5ths of all titles.

        • Agreed, but since time is a limited resource, I have found that the really good titles in the remaining fifth still cover way more time than I have available for gaming.

I wish I could live in the past where I could play anything without registering it online.

        Would be nice.

Definitely, as a Mac user, I’m happy with this, they must have learnt from the lessons of Total War which took over a year to arrive on Mac.

I was really disappointed with this incarnation. I played five missions, got really sick of having to switch factions every level – it felt fairly souless. The base building is just weird.

I even went back to Dawn of War 2 to compare the two – yes it was as awesome as I remember it.

    So disappointing.

I wonder what I’ll think of it… I’ve been playing Warcraft 3 to get ready. If you beat the game does it let you pick missions? It would make replaying on higher difficulties more appealing. Playing just the space marine missions on hard mode…

You’ll have to judge for yourself, but having loved every incarnation of the series this was the first one I’ve put to one side because I just got bored halfway through the first playthrough.

You can pick missions once you’ve finished them without having beaten the entire game.

I’ve completed the first 4 missions on very hard, but the 5th mission is just terrible (Orks versus waves of Orks) and I stopped playing until some patches fix/balance it.

Wonder how long until they release an interesting faction. Probably right beforehand DoW4, huh?

  • Awesome, now I have 2 computers that aren’t fast enough to run DOw III 😂
