Make Your Own Space Marines – Challenge

Roboute Guilliman commands you to create a new chapter – hobbyists!

GW put up this fantastic “My First Astartes” coloring book page, um blueprint, yes blueprint of a blank set of Mk.X Primaris Power Armour on facebook recently.

It’s been noted that the Primarch is ordering a new founding of Space Marine chapters to kick Chaos butt and we’re just here twiddling our thumbs, and saving up money waiting for 8th to arrive.

You know what might be a good idea? 500 new chapters; take THAT Abaddon!

And that means is hobby challenge time!

Your Mission:

  • Grab that sheet below
  • Color it either digitally, or by hand.
  • Fill out the sheet fully, with Chapter Name, Motto, helmet variations, and most especially…notes.
  • Link or attach it in the DISQUS comments below.

I can’t wait to see what you all come up with.  Serious, grim, hyper-realistic, impressionistic, funny, subversive, sublime, genius?

We’ll look through them in a bit and pick our favorites in the days ahead.

~Get designing hobbyists – we want to see the very best your fevered brains can come up with!

  • benn grimm
    • AWESOME! Where the heck is everyone else? You can’t let Benn claim all the glory… or the loot. *hint*

      • Crevab

Alright, there’s my job for the night. Prepare for dumb

      • benn grimm

        Thanks! 🙂

    • 3dken

      Those shoulder pads are awesome!!

      • benn grimm

        Cheers dude 🙂

    • Crevab

I tried using those colors as a scheme. It’s nice to see them look good

      • benn grimm

        Thanks dude 🙂

    • DJ860

Hahahaha those shoulder pads. I was going to enter, but now what’s the point, I can’t compete with that.

      • benn grimm

        Thanks! You definitely should! 🙂

    • BT

So what is their name? Checkered Past?

      • benn grimm

Lol. Totally couldn’t think of a name, so gonna call them after their inspiration and in nearly Latin, because pretension… ‘The Emprahs Ortus’ .)

    • Cergorach

      That actually hurts my eyes!

      • benn grimm

        Haha, sorry! 😉

    • Devourer

Just awesome! The colors, the markings, the faces.. eeeh helmets! Big love!

      • benn grimm

        Thanks! 🙂

  • Crevab

The Muscle Dysmorphia Marines! Born from every time a fanboy bemoaned his models weren’t the largest infantry on the field.

  • Ghosy01 .

this is the only chapter maker i recognize

    http://www.bolterandchainsword.com/smpbeta.php

  • Ghosy01 .

how does guilliman pump out chapters like nothing? doent it take hundreds of years to get the imperium ready for a founding?

    • Crevab

Cawl spent the last 10k years being the most productive member of the Imperium and no one had heard of him

      • dinodoc

He should be declared the Avatar of the Omnissiah at this point.

        • vlad78

As a matter of fact, he is.

          • dinodoc

Out of curiosity, do they explain what he was doing during the War of the Beast?

          • vlad78

Do you really expect coherency at this point? I’m sure he didn’t think things were serious enough to get out of under that rock he hid all along. ;p

          • Crevab

He was introduced in The Gathering Storm. They haven’t retconned him into any past events yet.

    • SilentPony

Shut it! GW wants you to buy Primaris, who cares what lame nerdy geeky 40k universe reason there is? I mean since when has GW ever cared for Warhammer 40k lore?!?

      • Derpius Prime

SilentPony sigh… the thing is you’re right… and i’m still going to buy primaris…. :'( i can’t make it stop

      • Hawt Dawg

        Since they invented it?

      • AEZ

40K universe IS nerdy and geeky.. and GW is expanding the universe.. people like you would mean we’d only have a few books since most books bring new stuff to the universe to some degree or they’d just be boring rewrites of old stories. Expanding is taking care of it better than keeping it stale, old and forgotten in a few years.

    • Dan Wilson

He’d been planning this with Cawl before he got wounded and put into stasis.

      • BT

But was it ever established before hand,or is it lazy writing to say this has been in the works and just no one knew about it. That thousands upon thousands of Marines were just sitting about. What was the guy gonna do if Roburto kicked the bucket?

Bad enough they are changing fluff to say any non-marine wanker can survive thousands of years. I mean, this guy is older than Dante at this point. His bio parts are long dust. This fluff almost spits in the eye of all of their existing fluff at this point. Dang that is lazy writing.

        • AEZ

Hello, hardly anything was in the first 40K book or codex. Everything else has been added and most of it without it being established way before. You just go play first edition or stop being a hypocrite and only condemn the stuff you don’t like. It’s not like this is the first time fluff contradicts .. it happens all the time in 40k and in other settings.

    • ieyke

Belisarius Cawl has spent the last 10,000 years executing Guilliman’s contingency plan orders. Doing nothing but developing the Primaris Marines, perfecting their new weapons and wargear, and finding a way to resurrect Guilliman.
Cawl is an Archmagos Dominus from the time BEFORE superstition and idiocy dominated the Imperium, and apparently all his skills and resources have been dedicated solely to this task for 10,000 years.

      • Crevab

Or in other words; BS they pulled from their bum

        • ieyke

Very well explained, logically coherent BS.

          • Crevab

            Ha!

          • BT

No, far from it. Lazy, poorly thought out, barely coherent BS.

          • AEZ

            Haters gonna hate…

          • ieyke

            Nope.

        • AEZ

That sums up the whole 40K universe… so it fits right in.

          • Crevab

            What?

          • AEZ

The whole universe is imagination… and seriously if you let and outsider read a general overview of the 40K past and put this in front of them noone would say it’s odd or really different. Change after 10K years isn’t odd.. it’s way more unbelievable there HASN”T been change for 10K years.. I mean the PC’s we are typing on are something that hardly existed 50 years ago. Progress is normal for humanity. Even countries that where considered very anti-change in some respects are changing (cuba, china, north-korea).

          • benn grimm

There has been change in 10,000 years, ancient knowledge (like how the scary tech works) has gradually been lost, much like it was in the middle or(grim) dark ages. They have no clue how things work, they pray to the machine and waft censer smoke on it in superstitious hope that it might please turn on and fire it’s gun at that guy over there. That’s mankind in 40k; you want progress, go Tau.

          • AEZ

I know what the lore (generally) entails… I also know it’s a very unlikely scenario. A small group of people might forget stuff.. but an empire with scientists (in one way or the other) and a way of noting stuff down for next generations (even if only in paper) tends towards progress (says history).

          • benn grimm

How much do we really know of our own history? They reckon humans have been on the planet around 200,000 years, recorded history goes back to about 3500 bc, but there are huge gaps. We’re progressing now (mostly) but in a thousand years? Ten thousand? If history has taught us anything it’s that empires fall, paper/stone/papyrus burns (or gets wet, or rots, crumbles etc)and people forget. I had a mate at Uni who said we’re all about one generation from illiteracy; electricity goes and that’s it, back to the dark ages and all the google in the world won’t save you 😉

          • Crevab

What does the lore generally entail? I’ve seen you say a few time that progress makes sense in 40k. You know about the Iron Men and the Daemons, right?

          • AEZ

The general statis in technology and the whole mysticism surrounding tech was what I meant. I still think progress is more logical.. in this situation Cawl doing his research “underground” makes even more sense (till he could return hes mecenas.)

      • Carey_Mahoney

        Wow, he’s really old.

        • BT

Older than Dante… older than anything that isn’t a marine should be (that is human).

          • AEZ

            He’s probably 99% machine.

        • ieyke

          I mean….. He’s clearly like 99.999% machine.
He’s a HUGE mechanical monstrosity, compared to any run of the mill human-sized Tech Priest, because of how much of his body has been replaced and augmented by bionics.
If he can build the life support systems and technology to resurrect Guilliman from death, it’s no surprise he’s figured out how to make himself pretty much immortal.

          • OldHat

            That image is fantastic.

    • BT

Because Fluff… and that is why fluff is totally meaningless. Not like they could be clever and have Bile (AKA Dr Frank N. Furter) in a Warp time flux(or as he calls it, the Time Warp) do the same thing for Chaos.

Seriously, which is better, my fluff or GWs fluff? Which one is actually more grounded in the existing fluff?

    • benn grimm

He has a magic plot tube that fires bigmarines like pieces of potato from a spud gun…;)

  • Daniel Krongaard
    • I fully expect a Woody chapter before it’s all over.

    • vlad78

      Available in 4 terran dialects.

  • Hawt Dawg
  • Tim Molesworth
    • I think Alpharius had something to do with these guys…

  • Tshiva keln

Great idea bols, just wish I wasn’t so busy. (Note: “busy” should be pronounced “lazy”)

    • Sonic tooth

Awesome. that’s kindov the same visual idea I have! (The fox part anyway!) Mine are corax successors with Irish mythological theme/names/ imagery..Experts in forest and urban guerilla fighting. Can’t think of a good “fox” name tho!

    • Ksgrip

What programm did you use for that beauty?

      • Photoshop. Used the GW pdf as base to edit

    • Brian Brodeur

Where did you find the cleaned up version of the original picture? a version that lends itself to just paint fill would be awesome.

      • It is the PDF straight from GW. Used photoshop for fills

  • There ya go.
(To be fully honest, I will do my Imperial Fists Captains NMM gold instead of yellow, so that’s kinda a digital ‘preview’ I guess :P)

    http://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/d7224dd939c5d7fd32fff25c87a8f037ab2f613924890f2e6a36bb34dd81eec2.jpg

    • Crevab

I love Goooooold. The look of it, the tashte of it, the shmell of it, the texture.

      • Now that I think of it, I should have called the Chapter “Goldmember”.

        • I have Preferred Enemy: The Freaky Deaky Dutch

          • AEZ

            That hurts.

        • vlad78

That will be the nickname of the first company. The geneseed makes them divergent but they haven’t had the time to realize that and to integrate the needed morphological changes within the veterans suits given that there are no primaris veterans atm .

    • AEZ

Gold looks good. My gold sprayed started of stormcasts (never played them or put mroe paint on them) looks decent without anything else… however.. if it’s your army I’d really put another color on some of the trim, even if it’s only bronze (similar) or black (high contrast).

      • My Imperial Fist captains will have proper trims and contrasts 😉 Similar to my other Fists ( https://www.brushrage.com/minis/21 [https://www.brushrage.com/minis-db/imperial-fists-tactical-space-marines.jpg]), just in gold. And other Marines I won’t paint gold at all, that image was just for BOLS.

    • Where’s the mandatory thunderhammer?

  • Ksgrip
  • Felix Herfort
  • Piotr Chełstowski
    • AEZ

Everything looks very good (nice shading) but the blue in the alternatives doesn’t fit nicely with the grey of the armor I’d say.

Ow and I’d make the crotch part less… the centre of the picture.. the way you made it lighter than the rest draws the eye to it (and that is not my natural inclination – take my word for it) a bit like the little girl in rembrandts nightwatch.

    • Severius_Tolluck

Clever use of St Andrews Cross. I approve of your Rebel Marines.

  • Karol Michalik
  • Aleksander Zawada
    • dinodoc

Looks like it’d be hellish to paint but I like it

    • I like it. Especially the mottled effect.

  • Allerka

Heh, I already went and did it on my own anyway. Been running these guys since I started the hobby 14+ years ago. Guess it’s time for a new generation.

Definetely not as eccentric as the rest, but it never hurts to have a serious entry or two. Began making ides for these guys as soon as the Primaris Marines were announced. Got many paragraphs of background for them already.

  • GnomesForge

Ok. I choose regular sized Marines.

  • Thinking of a mobile force with a several Scout squads, Land Speeders, and Stormravens. Would like something to transport the Primaris though! Can you picture them in a Land Speeder?http://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/aa0187276c8483be66837c8ec96ce49669562a6629041749be4e77e745deeeba.jpg

  • Warlock Scout
  • Went for something simple that I know I can paint. 😉 but the fun is in adding all the trophies onto the models. My current SM force has many such trophies. Chapter name was generated from my local stores little random name generator. Kinda liked how it turned out, so I thought I would keep it.
