Relic is back with a short primer on exactly what Annihilation mode is – old school DoW fans are going to want to see this!

We wrote about the return of the base building mechanics in DoW III earlier this week. But if that wasn’t enough for fans Relic also put together a short video explaining the difference between the two different Annihilation Modes for the multiplayer portion of the game.

“You asked, and here’s our answer! We’re introducing Annihilation mode – wait, scratch that – Annihilation MODES to Dawn of War III!”

Annihilation Classic is a lover letter to the games RTS roots. You start with your core structure and a buidler – that’s pretty much it. It’s up to you to decide how you want to proceed with more buildings and base defenses. You can also build the new turrets – if you have the selected as one of your doctrines.

Annihilation with Defenses just gives you a leg-up on the defense front. You start the game with faction specific base protection so you don’t have to worry about building any initially. Keep in mind that the turrets are placed in predetermined locations and are just there for an early game buffer. They aren’t exactly in the most optimal defensive positions…

In both modes, the game boils down to being able to destroy your opponent’s core structures in order to win. Mercifully, this doesn’t count listening posts or resource point add-ons. So no, you can’t troll your opponent by hiding a listening post in some random spot on the map in hopes they just give up and quit after you’ve basically lost. Take your lumps and move on like a grown-up.

In another twist, building an HQ is going to be quite an investment in resources. Also, when an HQ is destroyed it also reveals the location of the rest of the structures for that player making hunting them down even easier. However you can always have a worker unit rebuild the HQ and your bases will revert back to being hidden in the Fog of War again.

Even if you’re base is wiped out in a team game you’re not done – any remaining forces you have are still under your control and you can call in your elites. Help out your allies and fight till the bitter end!

The update is out now and free for all players of the game. If you already own it then you just need to go to a custom match and select the mode to start playing. You can play vs the AI or your can setup a classic multiplayer match.

If you’ve been hankering for a return to classic style RTS game then give Annihilation mode a shot. If you’re a Steam user then you already know that the Summer Sale is going stong. Dawn of War III is on sale for 25% off right now:

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War III $59.99 $44.99
