40K: New Space Marine Codex May be Imminent

A lot of puzzle pieces are coming together – pointing to a new Astartes book coming soon.

It’s been a crazy week and 8th Edition is 2 days away.  Here’s some puzzle pieces that make BoLS think a new Space Marine codex is coming fast on the heels of the 8th Edition rollout.

  • GW Always rolls out a new Space Marine codex right after a new edition launch.
  • Reports are coming in of 8th Edition rules for some Space Marine Space Marine Vehicles that have never seen wide release – in particular the Rhino Primaris and the Land Raider Excelsior. These two were previously available only at Warhammer World.
  • There are no known rules reported for the new Redemptor Dreadnought.  GW doesn’t normally unveil models until they are quite close to release.
  • Reports are coming in saying the initial Space Marine unit book includes ZERO options for Primaris Marines to embark in any known vehicles. This would imply future transport options specifically for them.

I have a feeling a new Space Marine codex is coming with the initial wave of Primaris Marine kits to make them a viable standalone force – perhaps modeled on the initial rollout of the Stormcast Eternals.

~ Would you rather field a mixed army of standard and Primaris marines, or go purely Primaris?

  • Sleeplessknight

I can’t wait for Guilliman to open the Extremis Chamber and unleash the Primarus Marines that ride dragons and giant chickens.

    • rtheom

Sorry bro, the Skitarii already have a patent on giant chickens.

    • Ravingbantha

oddly enough, I’ve been looking for some good chicken mini’s for my orcs to ride

    • Nathaniel Wright

I can’t wait for u to git gud.

    • Mr.psyker

      Robo dragons

    • mreindl

Nah, they’ll be Ninja Dragon Riders. Are they ninjas who ride dragons, or are they riders of Ninja Dragons? Who knows?

    • kloosterboer

The dragon has arrived. Repulsor grav tank inbound in 3…2…

  • Sythica

    Obvious rumor is obvious.

    • Allerka

      Welcome to BoLS reporting. 😛

  • You don’t say….

  • “Would you rather field a mixed army of standard and Primaris marines, or go purely Primaris?”

How about sticking with regular Marines altogether?

    • Dusty

I was going to ask the same thing.

    • Karru

That’s not how this works. You are going to buy their new marines and you are going to like it and you are going to say “thank you mr.GW!”.

      • You don’t?

        • GnomesForge

Some people are selective with their purchases. It is possible.

  • Fraser1191

i’m just here to complain that a necron warrior is cheaper than a tactical marine. its only one point but i thought they said there was going to be balance. but a necron warrior has leadership 10 his gun has ap -1 and has reanimation protocols… dafuq is this?

    • Sleeplessknight

Maybe because the Necron warrior moves 1 inch slower, has one point less of an armor save and doesn’t get to reroll failed leadership tests?

      • LordKrungharr

No, they just get to stand back up after being slain on a 5+, and retry turn after turn to stand back up. Hate those blasted Crons!

        • Severius_Tolluck

Except it is back to being at start of turn, not as a feel no pain.

    • WhenDidVicesBecomeVirtues

I highly doubt everything is going to be 1:1, there will be some exceptions.

      • Fraser1191

while i agree 1:1 would be boring. this is kinda silly, but i can admit that i may be jumping the gun as we’ve yet to see everything such as Chapter tactics or those stratagems they’ve kept low key

        • euansmith

“Kill ’em all!” (10cp): you opponent places their entire army in to Reserve. You gain one Kill Point for each unit removed from the table. 😉

    • MechBattler

Marines have 3+ armor, their chainswords give an automatic extra attack in combat, they have a million grenades, and will presumably never have leadership or morale problems due to ATSKNF.

Honestly speaking, with reanimation going back to a roll you make AFTER all the shooting is done, people will just go back to focus firing units until they’re dead, so a reanimation roll can never be taken. So, while it seems overpowered that they can keep rolling for reanimation, odds are, the unit won’t survive long enough for that to even kick in.

    • They said there would be balance, they just didn’t specify how much 😉 At least you know that SM isn’t going to be the bottom of the food chain. Also, the cake is a lie.

  • Max Knickerbocker

My LGS received a complete set of ALL the “codex” books today. They are incredible to say the least.

Besides the Excelsior land raider, the Terminus Ultra land raider is in the book. As in (3) Twin Lascannons and (2) Single Lascannons, 16 wounds and a 2+ save. I am psyched!

    • Crevab

Weird. Are they going to re-release the kit or are we back rules without models? Granted, it could hardly even be considered a conversion but there isn’t a box for it

      • Massawyrm

They sold an upgrade sprue kit for it for years. It could come back. It’s also super easy to kitbash from existing kits.

    • NNextremNN

I just assume with “codex” you actually mean “index” because that is a huge difference .

    • Bootneck

I think its a gimmick and sounds better than it is. Costing 80 meltabombs and being a LoW. I think a Knight would be able to do and take more damage.

    • Tyr

Only available for UM though, which is… kinda BS, really. I mean, they also get crusaders, so why do they get exclusive access to the TU? Blegh.

    • dante13

      Waac player sighted sir…

  • generalchaos34

2 days away? Do they mean the pre order or getting our hands on the already leaked codexes?

    • The Rout

I have a link to all the indexes and the rulebook but its pending approval. If it doesnt get approved its BoLS censoring it so they can get the sweet sweet clicks drip feeding this stuff.

  • Moises Martinez

seeing that I already have the Imperial 1 book, it’s impossible to create a competitive army with only primaris. There’s quite a bit of restrictions that make the primaris just meh…

  • Vachones

This is why I won’t be buying the Space marine index when it comes out. Its my 3rd army anyways so I can wait, but you have to assume that Space Marines and Death Guard will be the first ones up. I just hope GW has the accelerator mashed to the floor on getting the rest of the codices out. Things look pretty… bland based on the leaks.

    • NNextremNN

I won’t buy any index if they would have at least the FW models in them too I would consider them but so I’m just waiting for the real codices.

  • MechBattler

And for some reason, a Sigmarine with a Griffon.

    • euansmith

It is in reference to the final paragraph, “I have a feeling a new Space Marine codex is coming with the initial
wave of Primaris Marine kits to make them a viable standalone force –
perhaps modeled on the initial rollout of the Stormcast Eternals.”

And because Griffhounds are cool 🙂 I wonder if we’ll get rules for Cybermastiffs in 40k so I could field a few Griffhounds?

  • Immereth

Hoping when Space Marines get an actual codex that dreadnoughts can use drop pods again. As it stands in the index, no darts.

    • NNextremNN

FW has a dedicated dreadnought droppod.

      • Ebsolom

We will have to wait for the FW index

        • Fraser1191

they removed it from the site about a month ago maybe more. i was gonna buy one

  • Nyyppä

What do you mean “may be” imminent. It’s obviously imminent. There are no chapter tactics in the 5 books. Primaris codex will be there soon enough too. The rest will have to wait.

  • DoctorBored

And here I am still waiting for those plastic Sisters of Battle. And also Slaanesh. They’ve been pretty dark on the fate of that dark god.

    • Brian Griffith

Well, except for the shot we’ve seen of the Daemons section of the Chaos book showing a big piece of art involving good old-fashioned Slaanesh boobies.

And the Gathering Storm books mentioning that Lucius and his warband are on the move and Fulgrim’s been spotted.

      • Fergie0044

I really liked Fulgrim’s ‘attack’ on G-man in the book. Nice to see chaos try something more subtle.

  • Mike X (Official)

Is this article referring to Space Marines or the new “true scale” Space Marines? Or are they one codex (for now)?

  • BT

Er… didn’t they say there were no more codices???

    • NNextremNN

Not really they said that there will be those index books that contain everything to continue playing with your models. Except those don’t have relics, stratgems, chapter tactics or other faction specific rules, I think warloard traits are missing too and miss some faction specific psychic powers. For those things you will have to wait for the real old style codex.

    • karloss01

It’ll be like AoS, You get the big alliance books (The index books) for those who would rather pay then print off a load of datasheets and then battletomes will include new releases plus some exclusive rules for theme-ing your army around that book (The Codex books).

  • Marco Marantz

This is a nothing post. Of course there will be a new codex. Its already confirmed.

  • TheWanderingJewels

Well the Primarius vehicles are in the Forces of the Imperium book Vol1, which I admittedly skimmed through so I did not see the dread rules, but I think those are in there as well

    • mreindl

If you’re referring to the Primaris Rhino, that’s not for Primaris Marines, it’s the one that’s only officially available at Warhammer World in the set with the LR Excelsior. Just an upgrade sprue in a box with both models. IIRC, they cost around 400 pts to field in 7th. They also included rules for the 30th anniversary Imperial Space Marine, who’s no longer a free upgrade to the army.

  • marlowc

Hmm… 8th requires all new codexes (codices?), and you think the Space Marine one might be the first? You may be right Sherlock 😉

    • Parthis

      Haha, it’s great isn’t it.

      Classic BoLS.

  • Bootneck

I’ve seen some grainy pictures of the new DG tanks too, so they can’t be far away (CSM)

  • karloss01

    More then likely it’ll either be the first codex if the Death Guard one isn’t first; though I feel it’ll be a Primaris Marine book first. Both factions have models beyond the starter set so it’s safe to assume they will be the first to have codex support. Also GW just teased this;

  • Bootneck

I hope they don’t rush these, just noticed this little error, it appears the GSC make there tanks better!

    • Severius_Tolluck

Haha, or maybe it was on purpose, as GSC is a glass cannon….

    • Karru

Nah, working as intended. Guard tanks are worse than GSC tanks, obviously!

  • Coltcabunny

New SM codex on the way?
    No sh!t Sherlock…

  • mac40k

Reports are coming in saying the initial Space Marine unit book includes ZERO options for Primaris Marines to embark in any known vehicles. This would imply future transport options specifically for them.

“Seriously guys, we tried, but they are just too tall and kept bumping their heads. We had no recourse but to create all new vehicles for them.” – GW fluff justification

    • Aura1

‘But, new guy, Abaddon in Terminator armour always fitted in the old drop pods and he was allegedly close to Primarch size’

‘Don’t use logic with me midget! I need to be equipped with a new vehicle with a cod-Latin word tacked on the end to justify the price tag!’

  • JL

MAY be imminent? That’s quite a limb you’re going out on there.

  • [CU]MadKnight Hatter

who’s really gonna stop me just buying a unit of stormcast eternals and kit bashing them into primaris marines instead of using the new models – not that they don’t look great (tbh, i just want wings on the primaris jump troops.)

  • Drpx

    That’s the Damocles Rhino…

  • dante13

Mixed here, and well its June 3 in Australia
    and no Pre order?

  • Gennadios

For the love of all that is holy, The Index Imperium forgot about the Iron Hands. I shouldn’t even have been surprised, but I really hope there’s mention of them in the Codex proper.
