40K: The Story Advances With Dark Imperium
With the launch date fast approaching Warhammer 40,000 8th is doing something almost unheard of in 30 years: Advancing the Plot!
For fans of the Lore of the Dark Millennium 8th Edition is kind of a big deal. For the first time in 8 editions of the game Warhammer 40,000 isn’t going to be hitting the reset button on the lore – it’s actually moving forward. Now, we’ve talked about the impact that will have on the narrative. I’m also excited to see what happens with the Summer Campaign Fate of Konor. The Death Guard may have been pushed back in some of the story we’ve seen, but I have a feeling the Summer Campaign might be another wave of the attack – we shall see!
But as I’ve been thinking about what the future holds for 8th and the 40k Universe, I’ve often wondered what it’s like to help write that setting. What is it like behind the curtain? Do I even want to know how “the sausage gets made?” Well if your curiosity gets the better of you then the Warhammer Community has an interesting read. Black Library Author Guy Haley writes about how he approached (or rather, was approached) to pen the next chapter of the Warhammer 40k universe. Here’s a snippet below:

“Guy Haley: Big things were happening at Games Workshop. Warhammer 40,000, a universe I had watched grow for thirty years and lately had spent a lot of time playing in, was about to undergo a fundamental shift. Untold events were about to be unleashed.

“…I opted for Ultramar, zooming in on the war underway there between Guilliman and his twisted daemon-primarch brother Mortarion.
I mean, writing about primarchs in the 41st Millennium? Come on! No brainer.
Focussing on the returned Avenging Son enabled me to address some of the questions the new lore threw up. For example, I wanted to address what kind of formations the Primaris Space marines fought in before being assigned to existing or new Chapters. Hence the Unnumbered Sons – or Greyshields, as they are informally known – were born.
There’s a lot of mystery yet in the relationship between the Primaris and existing Space Marines, and many cool stories to explore and lore to uncover regarding their creation, integration with the Chapters and other fundamental questions, especially regarding the more exotic gene-seeds.”

This is only the beginning of the next chapter in the history of Warhammer 40,000. It doesn’t end with the events in Dark Imperium, Guy Haley goes on to say that this book is the first part in a series with “more to come from me on the matters of Guilliman, Cawl, the Primaris Space Marines, and Mortarion.”
I’m looking forward to re-reading a lot of the old backstory that is included in the Hard Cover Rulebook. I’m also looking forward to reading the new stuff that happens. After catching up on all the events of Gathering Storm I’m really pleased that GW opted for moving full steam ahead vs resetting the game lore. Again.
