Warhammer 40k Cosplay Fantasies

Imagining future Cosplay projects from the Warhammer 40k Campaign Setting.

Warhammer 40k Cosplay Inspiration

The last few months I have begun learning about the amazing universe surrounding Warhammer 40k, which is such an integral part of the BoLS wheelhouse. As a Cosplayer and model, I cannot help begin to daydream about the gorgeous imaging and artistic rendering of the 40k characters. Daydreams lead to designing future projects for them in my head. This is a world full of textures, fantasy, and imagination, which is so much the center of the Cosplay world. As such, I have recently started compiling a list of many deities and characters that I would love to design cosplay pieces for. Today we will take a moment to explore a few of my favorites.

Slaanesh– god/dess? of Pain, Pleasure, Perfection, and Hedonism

First off, WOW. This character has some serious nuance to her. She Who Thirsts is rendered in many different ways, but I believe that this particular version would lend itself easily to Cosplay. I see this character as something that would be done for a highly stylized studio photo-shoot, and I would enlist the skills of a fantastic body paint/special effects artist to accomplish it. Her gorgeous flowing hair and fantastic headpiece would be so much fun to create, and I love her regal, seductive pose in this image. Plus, the glowing eyes would be a delightful challenge to accomplish. And those CLAWS!!! She very much reminds me of the Dragonlance goddess of all Evil, Takhisis.  Acting out this character I imagine would feel quite like attempting to embody a snake- smooth and flowy at times, and then quick moments of violence.

The Yncarne– Avatar of Ynnead

Talk about Drama. I have already written about my desire to create Yvraine as a future cosplay, but this one also appeals greatly to my sense of fantasy drama. The textures of the body suit, the blowing blue around him that could easily be created with flowing fabrics to swirl around, the gorgeous horn and headdress… This project would be RIDICULOUSLY complicated, textured, and FUN. This characterization reminds me of a cross between the Final Fantasy Unicorn and a Shiva, both of which are gorgeous and inspiring. Since the character is inherently androgynous, figuring out how to get the movement and power correct would be an interesting challenge. It has the elegance of a fashion runway piece, but the strength and imposing nature which is much more masculine in nature. Fascinating!

Sylandri Veilwalker– Harlequin Veilwalker

The Harlequins hold a great deal of fascination for me. I have long been drawn to the lore behind the commedia dell’arte, and to see that Warhammer 40k holds an homage to that glorious piece of history was a thrill for me. I became instantly obsessed, and have even decided that in a dream world, the Harlequins and Ynnari would be my army of choice for playing 8th Edition. That being said, it is natural that I was drawn to this particular character. Her ability to influence those around her into action, subtly and sneakily inciting events that would change the course of history is ridiculously appealing. Her colors and fabrics are vibrant, and her warrior belt is particularly gorgeous, and her claw armor would be a fantastic accessory to create. This would be a character that could easily be taken to conventions, as it is not constricting or hard to move in. I could easily see this becoming a convention staple, especially because with the face covered, makeup would not be necessary!

~With so many fantastic characters to portray, how will I ever choose?! Comment below with your vote for which one to cosplay next!

My vote goes to Sylandri Veilwalker!

      I second this!

Good luck with the Yncarne. It would definitely be tricky to pull off but your right, there is some real potential with that one.

I think that some of the totally awesome body painters could probably pull off a convincing trompe-l’œil effect for some of those Aeiouldar characters that aren’t all physical.

The Slaanesh demon would make an amazing Herald miniature. For cosplay I’d say add in some elements of The Masque, players would appreciate it more as an identifiable character. While the Yncarne would be awesome to attempt, I can’t really see how it could be captured in reality. The swirling energies/souls just couldn’t be pulled off with any practical effects that come to mind. The Shadowseer would be cool too, and probably the easiest. If there is a way to project imagery on the face plate you’d have a show-stopper.
Please keep writing these articles, they’re a fun break from the usual list builds and “sky is falling” rules analysis.

Then don’t do the spirit vortex. It’s tacky on the model anyway. I personally don’t like any of that on models. Smoke, magic, etc.

Thank you so much!!! I absolutely will.

I would add cosplay for the wargame genre would be closer to what the historical reenactors do. By that I mean it’s important to get the details right. If you get too creative you will drift into the “counts as” territory and risk annoying some fans.

I tend to stray towards accuracy I need my cosplays. I WILL make things more textured so they pop more, but I son usually take creative liberties.

    What about male costumes 😛

    • Sonic tooth

      What about them?

    • Jennifer Lynn Larsen

The Yncarne is androgynous, so I would play it male to balance out my feminine features.

I haven’t decided on any other male WH40k cosplays, though there’s is an Eldar I have my eye on.

I DO, however, gave a list for Rome other worlds:

        -Raistlin Majere
        -Vincent Valentine
-Reno of the Turks (I closet cosplayed him once)
        -Alucard from Hellsing
        -Sebastian from Black Butler
-Tasuke or Chichiri from Fushigi Yuugi

She should know that’s not the best version of a final fantasy VII guide. The completely unauthorized final fantasy vii ultimate guide is the better guide for the game.

Just glad to have a stronger female presence around the hobby, sometimes it’s hard to remember that girls can like things that i like.

    • Jennifer Lynn Larsen

Thank you! I grew up on navy bases and be always been Obsessed with games and hobbies like these, so have found myself heavily in male dominated fields. Just the way of the world!
