Today, we’re previewing the Red heroes and villains of Empire at War, a new 160 card set of boosters for Star Wars™: Destiny. Red characters in Empire at War dominate their foes with powerful supports while maintaining an economical advantage and control of the battlefield.

The Characters

General Hux is a great character for establishing an early lead. He’ll assist you with getting out expensive event cards quickly by reducing the cost the number of characters you have in play. You could try to pair him with some cheaper characters to really take advantage of his ability – just be mindful of the board state and don’t rely on that as your only way to victory.

Ciena Ree is a new character card that will work extremely well with the vehicle upgrade cards. If you’re wanting to run a theme deck with a ton of transportation options Ciena Ree is a great option to start with!

Hera Syndulla’s ability is pretty great for getting a vehicle rapidly into play. It’s a bit of a double edge sword – on one hand the vehicle has to return to your hand at the end of the action phase. On the flip side, it was FREE for that turn. And if you can manipulate your dice to get that special again, it’s a rinse and repeat!

Cheap, generic characters are a great way to fill points or to act as cannon fodder. Thankfully, this Rookie Pilot’s ability is at least useful with the right deck.

The Support

The AT-DP has a really nice ability when you get a Special result. Discarding a Support card can be pretty mean when done correctly. On top of that it’s got some decent damage output on 3 of it’s facings. Not too shabby!

Ahhh the iconic Y-Wing is coming to the game. It’s got pretty good odds of causing a combination of damage or disruption to your opponent. Forcing them to lose 4 resources, take 4 damage or some combo of both can really slow down their plans.

The Ghost is also making is debut in Star Wars Destiny. If you can get it in play, it’s one of the few cards/dice that doesn’t really have a down side! Decent damage, coupled with good support and no blank slot – what’s not to like?

Rally Aid seems like it could be fun if you like Random Chance. Then again, if you wait until you ONLY have a vehicle in your hand, it’s really not so random any more, is it?

Good old Shield Generators. Always the first to go. We barely knew ye! For 1 resource it’s a good way to protect your more valuable assets. Could be hand to have in your deck – especially with those AT-DP running around!

The Events

Reckless Reentry is a risky deal. It could pay off by allowing you to double-up on a vehicle card. Or it could cause you to lose it entirely. Just don’t roll blanks! Problem solved.

Ouch! When you need to reset the board state there are few cards that are as costly or as effective as Fall Back. If you’re falling behind and need to stall or if you have a good play to follow-up, wiping out all the upgrades (except 1 per player) seems like a good way to start!

Imperial Backing seems like a natural fit with General Hux up top. You could combo this very easily to play this card for free and then play another support for cheap. Just make sure you have enough characters in play so it’s worth your time (and resources)

Red Alert just straight-up readies a non-unique Red Character. I’m conflicted about this one. If it was any Red Character it would totally be worth 3 resources. Unfortunately it’s non-Uniques only. In some cases that 3 resources would totally be worth it – but in other…I’ll let you decide.

The Upgrades

There is only upgrade card that was teased and that is Natural Pilot. I must say, it’s a solid addition for vehicle themed decks. It’s pricey but it adds some good firepower and support actions. None of that is bad in my book!
