40K BREAKING: Mortarion Mini Sighted!

GO GO GO – the 2nd Daemon Primarch’s mini has been spotted.

Behold the lord of the Death Guard!

Mortarion arrives. Note how the model compares with the previous artwork and teaser pictures from GW:

The wings are an exact match.

GW’s Adepticon scythe teaser image was indeed from Morty.

I think this probably means the Death guard codex is just around the corner.  I would expect GW to drop formal images of Mortation shortly.

~Have at it!

  • Rita-Audrey Jones

He looks rather awesome! But also a nightmare to transport!

  • blackbloodshaman

Looks ok, I guess, kind of a better looking nagash

    • Geko747

This model has nothing on Nagash

      • blackbloodshaman

eye of the beholder I guess

  • Thomas

Kind of a shame they went for the bright colours and didn’t adopt the more muted tone in the artwork. Feel that deathly pallor is more in keeping with Mortarion’s vibe. Cool model though.

Also, off-topic, but the chapter approved book sounds very cool. Encouraging to see GW live up to the promise of an adaptive ruleset.

    • Zhan

I kind of feel the same about all the death guard models. I dont really like how they painted any of them

      • generalchaos34

its an artistic choice like always of course, I think they wanted to make Nurgle be not just “DARK GROSS ZOMBIES!!!!!”. Plus you’d be surprised just how colorful virulent diseases are on a human being. Of course you can go with whatever paint scheme you want. I remember not being impressed with the blue paint job of the Scions when they came out and now I cant imagine them in anything else!

        • Zhan

Oh its not really the diseases its more the colour of the armor thats just a bit meh for me.

But yeah as long as the models are great (and they are) there is nothing to worry about 🙂

      • Thomas

Yeah, bit too clean. I kind of followed the GW method for my dudes, except I muted the colours with washes and added a bunch of grime and rust. Only bright colours I used were the pink-y fleshy parts (which you can see a bit of on this dude). http://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/478535e9b7dad3b21b2952ca487500f9a8c98a24de4699ae43df31ebae41c001.jpg

        • Txabi Etxebarrieta

*THIS* is the kind of stuff that legitimately makes me consider getting back into 40k with a Death Guard army. I don’t like the slimy look. I like the idea of Deathguard having both emaciated, crusted half-zombies and bloated monstrosities that bleed black ichor. Less tentacles, more crust and dried rot and rust.

          • memitchell

“Less tentacles, more crust and dried rot and rust.”

I love this hobby! And, yeah, I like my Nurgle well done, instead of medium rare.

          • Rafał Pytlak

“Not feeling r*a*p*e*y today, sir? An excellent choice!”

        • wibbling

You forget that Workshop produce models for promotion, not for the painting alone. Some colour schemes just don’t work well in print, so they avoid those and sometimes the Heavy Metal schemes can be quite garish.

    • phobosftw

the same can be said for all of the new death guard , pink and purple just doesnt make sense

      • Sybarite

Actually purple and yellowish greens makes a lot of sense in colour theory.

        • phobosftw

what.. is this.. positivity? YOU SHALL NOT PASS! -Color theory?! oh yea, very nurgly, and soo death guard that, infact I think, according to the fluff it was papa nurgle himself who came up with the original hypothesis.. 😀 . I am sorry, I shall be getting my coat..

          • Sybarite

Haha, well, that being said, it might be the picture but I am not a fan of the paint scheme on this mini. It’s rough to look at. So much going on everywhere. I’d like if it put more focus on the face.

        • Izak Lazarowski

          1. I think the image itself may be filtered to be over-saturated with too much contrast.

          2. IDK why this paint job is getting so much hate. Color is a good thing on the table top and for the centerpiece of an army the last thing you want is a muddy mess.

      • generalchaos34

bruising and swelling and such can be quite colorful actually, lots of bright reds, yellows, purples, greens, blues, blacks, etc so its definitely an interesting and very fluffy choice

    • Knight

I feel the same way, I found this color I really liked.

      https://youtu.be/HR7gwyw6KyU?t=1h33m41s

    • Severius_Tolluck

Sad thing is, chapter approved was pretty much an annual supplement before the internet and well.. rapid rules changes made them a pain for the company, that and the dark times… we wont speak of the dark times.

  • Hamish Beer

And the leaks from 8 months ago were legit

    • Indeed. Well remembered.

  • Rayna M. McCowan

Still want Fulgrim. But, hey, Death Guard is getting it’s codex in September, we’ll get plastic kits for Death Guard (no more small kits to rely on), and likely a mortar tank (as spotted in a previous white dwarf). Should be interesting release. Still curious what the other codex for September will be.

    • Christian Swate

the “leaked” image is from the back of the next issue of white dwarf so we will probably see a DG codex release before the end of the month

      • Rayna M. McCowan

Yeah, but given GW’s release schedule we have a mystery codex coming in. I mean what was it 10 codexes in 5 months starting with June, we have had 3 once CSM and GK come out. 4 with DG in August. So that leaves October, November, and December with possible double releases. I guess since DG is kind of a new sub faction, they might get their own release month like SM did to give a bit of space for new models to breath as well.

    • Moonsaves

      That looks a ton better.

  • BloodAngel

    Rainbow butterfly.

  • georgelabour

I was honestly hoping form a more gaunt spectral figure much like the old space marine/epic version of him.

There’s not to many other Daemon-primarchs where thin and wasted looking are going to work so having yet another beefy chunky monkey is a minor dissapoiintment.

OTOH just imagine how BUFF Angron is going to have to be now. Abs for days!

  • Jared van Kell

I remember seeing these pictures of the model a while back. The pictures were tiny and you could not make out much detail, a lot of folk even dismissed it as a conversion, but it was definitely Mortarion. http://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/eb8ceef1c4085b5fae2a54c9d6dbe0791179507dc266b74b248cb3a77d3e93b0.jpg

  • Nick Vaughn

Looks like the winged sigmarine guy from AOS.

    • YetAnotherFacelessMan

But… if the Chaos Warriors came first… and the Chaos Space Marines were Chaos Warriors in Space… and the Space Marines were Chaos Warriors, but Order instead of Chaos… and the Stormcast were Space Marines, but in Fantasy… then…

You’re an idiot. Of course it looks like a guy in armor with wings. It is.

      • ledha

he even share the same pose

    • SWISSchris

RT was WFB in space. Space Marines from Knights.

Now AoS is 40k in a fantasy setting. Sigmarines from Space Marines.

  • Knight_of_Infinite_Resignation

The artwork is so much better. Another chubby figure like many recent ones.

    • ZeeLobby

The artwork is just awesome by comparison.

      • Knight_of_Infinite_Resignation

With that to go on, how did they go so wrong? Looks like a baby dangling in one of those baby walkers rather than a gaunt spectral entity!

        • orionburn

Maybe wait to pass judgement until we get some decent photos rather than a crappy photo of a photo? I think it likely that GW would give multiple options to deck out the model like they did with Magnus. I think a pose of both arms holding the scythe would have made for a better ‘action’ model.

    • orionburn
      • Navaren

Is that new typhus talking to the tallyman? Hmmmmmm.

      • Knight_of_Infinite_Resignation

ah yes you are right, 2/3rds rotated looks cool. Still kind of busy though.

        • orionburn

Yeah…sometimes less is more. Awesome model, but there is a lot going on.

          • Knight_of_Infinite_Resignation

imagine how long it will take to paint, start now, it will be ready for the Deathguard release in 9th!

          • zeno666

GW knows about Less is More just as much as George Lucas 😉

    • zeno666

Yeah, I kind of liked to artwork.
That other thing looks like a bad conversion.

  • luke-vdv

Well, the paint scheme is doing him no favours is all I’ll say so far. Why would they go with Tzeentchian colours? It looks off.

  • Nosebleed

    That pose looks awfully familiar…

    • Jared van Kell

It is like they have copied the pose of another model… Oh wait.

  • Xodis

Its great having a Black Legion army where I can conceivably field both Deamon Primarchs…….its going to be fun 😀

  • shadowwaker_4

The paint scheme is a little bright.Darker robes will do wonders. Otherwise a fantastic depiction of the Angel of Decay.

  • badmojo1966

I’d like to see it again painted differently. Seems to me at least, way too much going on like rainbow icecream. I can’t even find his head.

    • WhenDidVicesBecomeVirtues

His headed is the eyes melded into the respirator (has two filters coming out of it) under the purple hood.

    • MechBattler

It’s like the squatty potty unicorn threw up all over him.

  • JL

Maybe it’s the colours or I need to see some better photos but I don’t like it.

First, the colour scheme is blech, but it also just looks so busy. There’s just so much on it it’s distracting.

    • ZeeLobby

Welcome to the new GW. My new DG only lasted several minutes before I clipped the 20 plague censors off them.

      • JL

I didn’t go that far but I had a couple doodads break off and didn’t feel the need to glue them back on.

FW Mortation looks pretty great. I wish they would have stayed along those lines.

        • ZeeLobby

Haha. Protective doodads. Guess that’s a new way to look at it. And yeah, I really wish FW was doing these.

  • ZeeLobby

Ugh. Artwork, awesome. Model with 18 censors strapped on, good why….

    • MechBattler

      That’s why we have CLIPPERS.

      • ZeeLobby

It’s still a disappointment. I mean why, WHY, would any of their sculptors think this is the right direction…

        • MechBattler

Well aside from the 42 censors, it’s not a bad looking model. It’s really just the paint job that makes it look horrendous. If they stuck with a dingier grey/green scheme like the artwork, it’d look better. And I’d cut off some censors… might leave the chains though.

Right now he looks like the daemon primarch of the Prismatic Marines.

          • ZeeLobby

Yeah. Paint job doesn’t help, but good lord do they go overboard.

  • MechBattler

I’m starting to think their “painters” need their eyes checked. Those drapes do NOT go with those curtains.

  • mrbleak

Man I hope it´s the paint job cause he looks like crap. Luckily the illustration shows off a good colour scheme that gives hopes on how he might look if painted correctly.
But for now, FW Mortarion is the only one I would even consider for my Death Guard.
Now if you´ll excuse me, i´ll go bleach my eyes for having seen that picture.

  • Harkeal III Brennon

Looks great. It will blend perfectly with deathguard army with that armor. I was hoping for new Typhus also but it is ok. It is bad that he will be smallest character in my army.

  • Keith Wilson

looks like those tiny old leaked pics were valid after all

  • Keith Wilson

really busy model and the paint job i think makes that fact exaggerated

    • Overall I’ve noticed the newer GW models are just dripping with details. They are so busy, you really need a simple palette to to them justice.

If you go with a large complex palette on models this busy it just goes all over the place like a rainbow vomited on the mini, and becomes visually distracting.

I think we will need to see Morty in something subdued and simplistic to do the model justice.

Also the GW color choices seem a bit on the Tzeentch side for my Nurgly tastes.

  • Gunther Clone C

I agree with most, saying that the model looks great, but the color scheme looks like Tzeentch and/or Slanesh are trying to muscle in on Nurgle’s colors. You don’t see pinks or purples on anything from Khorne…maybe Nurgle’s the pushover of the group.

  • Jooster

    Not impressed in the slightest.

I want to say I’m reserving judgement until I see one that’s not been painted by someone who’s colourblind, but knowing how much GW over-details their minis these days I can’t really hold out much hope.

  • Bakvrad

My first thought: uh yeah, a new tzeentch demon…
    Then I looked closer…

  • Fergie0044

I’ll want to see more of it before casting final judgement – but first impression is I do not like those wings. Needs the bat wings like on the audio book cover.

  • BrassWitch

By god that’s one awfull looking head, and not in the good sense!

  • BartTP

    A beautiful, beautiful butterfly…!

  • FUBAR1942

Possible new imperial/traitor guard mini in the new mortarion pic. Look above mortarion on the walk way what looks like a guardsman with a sickle clip lazgun. What ever it is just stands out to much even though its slightly out of focus.

    • dark-tadpole

Can’t see the guardsman but there may be new assault troops or something as I can make out the new curved flying stands on the walkway above Mortarion.

  • Carey_Mahoney

Also, interesting terrain in the background.

  • Raika von Richthofen

Gotta say l usually agree to a lot of changes and also some odditie but compared to the “teaser” (bracket lntentional) the model is an entire difference. And in that level of decor and colors alongside the odd face l can’t really approve of lt personally, am rather disappointed…

  • Suicidemaniac

Ugh, pass. Looks like a mess and the paint job doesn’t help it.

  • Luca Lacchini

Sculpt looks good, color palette is appalling. The way too bright greenish armor, the cartoonish purlple-blue drawing an X over the wings/body, nope, nope, nope, so much nope.
Dark greys, muted browns, grayish-greens, diluted yellows, get back to where you belong.

  • Rafał Pytlak

I admit i had a hard time searching for his head. The skewed perspective and paint job didn’t help…
Luckilly, when i located the rebreather all was well. For a moment i feared his head turned to goop like the Plaguecaster…

  • Moonsaves

RLM “what’s up with your faaaaaace?”

  • Atogrim

    Where is his face?! ^^

    • orionburn

It’s like those old 3D images from the 90s. You have to let your eyes relax and then once you finally see it you can’t unsee it…lol

      • Atogrim

They never worked for me. Well, i guess that explains everything 😉
Courious to see a real picture of him.
Because what i can “see” on this picture leaves a “meh” impression.

        • orionburn

          lol…

It’s a terrible leak. Bad photo (low quality) of a bad photo (poor choice of positioning). Not a fan of the color choices either, but going to hold off judgement until we see some better images of it.

  • orionburn

Maybe hold off on the hate until we get some decent photos? This is a lousy photo of a photo. Granted I think it’s a terrible angle to be a (supposed) full size image on the back of WD. Given the size it’s likely that there will be options for pose/heads like they have done with Magnus and Lord of Change. Just think it’s a wee bit early to be hating on the model based on one low quality photo.

  • Guillermo Cordido

and which one would be the new loyal primarch?

  • Aura1

Model is fine. ‘Eavy metal paint team need to spend time at Forge World for reeducation in using non primary colours and the idea of dirt being fine on THE LORD OF PLAGUES AND DECAY.

  • Ebsolom

Whilst not detracting from the obvious skill of the painter, it just looks too pastel coloured for me.

  • James Mcclennan

Paint job isn’t doing him justice, I think.

  • Lumpenprole

    My Little Mortarion.

  • MightyOrang

He’s overwrought… like they turned up the Nurgle Bling factor to 11.

Magnus remains the way do Chaos Primarchs.

  • Dan Wilson

Yeah much more in the way of dirty dark green armour, with dirty cream robes. The colour palette of the artwork is spot on.

  • The paint job they gave him is horrible. But I think giving him a proper paint job will do the model well. Paint it like the artwork.

  • piglette

Too bright of a paintjob. Needs muted, sickly, earth tones.

  • Talos2

Gw have a habit of doing awful paint schemes that ruin models first impressions but this is the worst one I’ve seen yet. Truely awful. Hard to tell if I like the model

  • Drew_Da_Destroya

We know the Death Guard codex is next… they announced that the first four would be Marines, Chaos Marines, Grey Knights, and Death Guard. Process of elimination…

  • Wolf-Assassin

    Quick everyone get your vaccination!

  • Josh Felstead

I’ve always been an Imperium fanboy, but I have to admit that the Mortarion mini is utterly fantastic! http://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/decb88681df6050bf0f22ef09c16262bb886c1d4ac1faeed21284f3e86a4302a.png

  • zeno666

    Wow what a letdown :
Did children design that and painted it with crayons?

  • Oskar Drabikowski

I’m sorry WH40k fanboyz, but he look like a little bit… Winged fairy?

  • Richard Mitchell

Compared to some of the other minis GW has been putting out, that thing hurts my eyes. Hopefully alternative paint schemes really bring it out.
