40K: Forget The Codex, Give Me Miniatures

4 Minute Read

Maybe it’s just me, but I would rather have some more miniatures to drool over instead of new books to read.

Pop Quiz: It’s right now and you’ve got to choose between getting new miniatures for your favorite army or getting a new codex. Which do you choose? For me, that is an easy answer: New Miniatures!

When 8th Edition Warhammer 40,000 dropped everyone got updated rules for the new edition. Everyone was ready to rock and roll and ready to go! Then the Space Marines got their new shiny Primaris Marines and Chaos got their gross (albeit very cool) looking Nurgle Marines (which are on the way). But what about everyone else?

Yep, still stuck with me!

Of the codexes that came out, only the Space Marines really got anything new. Sure, the Grey Knights got access to some new toys and so did the Chaos Marines, but they didn’t get any new models, right? And if the pace continues, will we see new models for the other rumored codexes?

I’m coming for you!

We all kind of knew and understood that when the new boxed set hit that Space Marines and Nurgle were going to be the stars of the show. In fact, the rumor that next year will be the year of the Xenos is starting to sound more and more plausible. But here we are in August and while we have seen a ton of new stuff come out for 40k, it’s all been very lopsided. If the last two codexes are any indication, then when Ad Mech, Astra Militarum, Tzeentch and the other 3 Space Marine books come out, I just don’t know if we’re going to get some new models to go along with them.

Glad your here…but you could have brought a friend.

I mean, I have an Ad Mech wish-list already going. I’m sure there are things that the Astra Militarum could use as well as Tzeentch Marines (although they DID get a pretty big bucket of cool stuff earlier). But as for the other Marines (Space Wolves, Dark Angels and Blood Angels) I’m having a hard time seeing them getting anything new. From my point of view, the Primaris Marines are pretty much all they are getting added to their existing model range.

Which, I mean, those are cool – but it’s like getting another Tactical Squad. This must be how a kid that has a birthday a between Christmas and New Years must feel. “Cool, I get presents…but really I’m only getting 1/2 the stuff I really want and it doesn’t feel that special.”

Like this, but red!

On one hand, I’m really glad that GW is putting out all these codexes. Really! It’s a good thing! But on the other hand, I also miss seeing new miniatures to go along with the new codexes. I was ready to join the next Black Crusade if a new Abaddon Model was released (I’m still holding out). But is the lack of new models a symptom of something else or has GW just swapped their focus to churning out codexes for the new edition?

Personally, I think GW has something else planned. We have seen they are reaching into their old back-catalog of games and they are redoing and revamping those. A new Necromunda is coming. Adeptus Titanicus is supposed to be on the way. Plus a ton of new other games are coming (like Shadespire). All of those will have new miniatures to go along with them as well!

Just you wait…

We’ve got just over 4 months left in 2017 and it’s been a wild ride so far. GW is cranking out new codexes at a rapid pace and they ARE releasing new miniatures just not for every codex. I’m really hoping they are saving some gas in the tank for the year of the Xenos because there are quite a few old kits that need some love and PLENTY of room for expansion. But we’ll have to wait to find out.

But back to the Pop Quiz – Which would you choose: A new codex or new miniatures?

Por Que No Los Dos, Indeed!
