Mortarion & Death Guard Termy 1st Impressions

We’ve gotten new looks at the Death Guard Primarch and his Termy buddies. Here’s what you may have missed.

Morty is BIG. He doesn’t have the sheer psychic scaled up size of Magnus or a Bloodthirster, but the model looks to be as tall. His base is hard to estimate from the images, but I would eyeball it in the 90mm or 100 round size.

Morty should be stable. Note the three thick columns from his magic cloak that hook into the rocky base.  It looks to be much more sturdier that things like Nagash or the Celestant Prime.

While Magnus is clearly Tzeentch/Avian themed, Mortarion is moth/insect based.  Look at the Atlas-moth style wings and insect wing vein patterns below for comparison. Now you know a lot much about moth wing veins than you did this morning.

He’s dripping in censors. Censors on chains, censors in straps, censors in his daemon moth wings, censors being carried by flying nurgling-cherubs – censors everywhere. I count 14 and I can’t see his back.

The model is in a mid-motion “snapshot pose” surrounded by lots of flowy chaos energy. This harkens back to the Yncarne, Mortis Engine and Nagash.

We don’t know yet if this model has any build options like Magnus did, but it’s such an intricate busy kit I would see this as difficult to pull off.

I REALLY like the flying Nurgling cherubs as it sets up a dark chaos reflection of the Imperial gothic/Roman Catholic iconography. It’s an inspired choice.

He’s got a nice mix of generic triple skill Nurgle (shoulderpad) and Death Guard logos (kneepad)

Finally there are two whitish objects extending back from his shoulders in between his wings. That could be anything from part of his cowl, to spikey growths, to an extra set of folded wings.  We will have to see the back of the model to know what’s up.

Atlas Moth. This beauty is 10″ across!

The Terminators

We’ve now seen several of these guys:

I’m pretty sure that new guy isn’t Typhus. He has a different helmet and only one eye.

Again we see the Nurgle tentacle theme commonly seen since it’s arrival with Gutrot Spume.

These guys if anything seem more disfigured than normal Plague Marines, with fantasy inspired chainmail and wrecked and distended bodies and armor.

I’m noting a pattern of covered, missing, or disfigured eyes on the Death Guard – I like it.

Also – scythes – scythes everywhere!

Bonus Dude – the Tallyman

Now it gets interesting.

This model described on video as “tallyman” is carrying paper and pencil, and AN ABACUS WITH SKULLS as counting beads!

Nurgle has often had both a fluff and rules background of counting; from the drone of Plaguebearers counting diseases for eternity to Epidemius’ master list. I have a suspicion we will see this model bring some of that over to the CSM side of things.

He also has an obvious vox/loudspeaker to call out his count, so I think this guy will offer some type of area effect buffs for the Death Guard.  I’m intrigued.

~ I woud think this stuff all hits us in very early September. What do you all think?

  • Ravingbantha

Typhus is pulled from the US site, this guy has a Scythe and a destroyer hive on the top of his armor, even the new pistol weapon he has on his arm, but hey, the helmet is a bit different, so it clearly can’t be Typhus. Ahriman got a slight revamp and a new plastic model, Kharn got a slight revamp and a new plastic model, this is Typhus, yes his helmet is a bit different, but it’s more inline with the current Death Guard look.

    • Prospero 4life

Just by looking at one picture of a model I can guarantee that this is in fact a model I say it is. Believe me, I am a person on the internet.

    • Prospero 4life

Oh look, a model with a destroyer hive….must be another Typhus yes?

      • inailo

The second termie model also appears to have the same pistol on his wrist, and quite possibly a two-handed melee weapon. This seems more likely to be a new breed of terminator unique to the Death Guard rather than Typhus and a shockingly similar model.

        • Prospero 4life

I did not even notice, thank you sir. Should in fact be Deathshroud terminators.

      • SilentPony

Why is this even an issue? Scythe, wrist mounted flamer, terminator armor…they’re Fing Death Shroud! They even have the armored skirts!

      • Ravingbantha

So then random terminator guy is bossing the Tallyman around and acting like he’s in command and trash talking the Primarch?

        • LankTank

Because that video was completely lore appropriate as opposed to a fun skit?…
          Seriously are you high?

          • Ravingbantha

Oh thank you great and wise Yoda for pointing out this was just a fun skit, without your venerable wisdom, surely I would have wallowed in the muck of ignorance. If only I had your supreme wisdom and intellect, perhaps then I might be able to post some witty GIF about how you completely missed my point.

          • LankTank

Don’t worry buddy. You still seem plenty ignorant so I’ll be able to help out whenever you need!

    • Arthfael

It does not feel like Typhus. It could be him, but then it would be a major change in model design from the previous incarnation.

      • Spacefrisian

Its not him, unless nurgle does surgery and makes legs pretty again.

    • Andy Wise

I’m book marking this page in case you’re wrong in which case I will be raining down derision on your lack of equivocation.

If you’re right, I’ll simply delete the book mark.

Literally a no risk strategy on my part.

      • Knight_of_Infinite_Resignation

unless you get back here and find comments have been closed, in which case FRUSTRATION OVERLOAD!

        • Andy Wise

aaargh – good point. In which case I will pre emptively drizzle derision now.

Regardless of whether you end up being right or wrong about a prediction it is wise to keep an open mind about the fact that you may be wrong.

And be nice to people on the way through.

          And not be sarcastic.

          • Knight_of_Infinite_Resignation

hmm, can’t tell if being sarcastic…

          • Andy Wise

Absolutely not being sarcastic. Appreciate it’s hard to tell online…

          • Knight_of_Infinite_Resignation

I tried to work out if you were being sarcastic about being sarcastic and my head exploded 🙂

          • Andy Wise

getcha – doesn’t help that I am actually super sarcastic a lot of the time. Just not online as it’s so easy to be mis interpreted.

    • Remember that Eldar Triumvirate with “totally” Lady Malys and “totally” Drazhar? Yeah right?

    • Spacefrisian

      Compare left leg please.

  • 301stFeinminsterArmoured

Just as long as we get some fun stuff, like Destroyers and Arty, this will be awesome. And make him summonable, like the other named DPs.

    • Rasheed Jones

THe only summonable DP are the ones in the Daemon part of the Index, Magnus can’t be summoned, and even if he had the rule he’s impossible to summon, you can’t roll 21 on 3d6, so it’s not very likely we’ll see him summonable.

      • 301stFeinminsterArmoured

I suppose Arch-Daemonic Ritual would be too much to ask. You can still summon Be’lakor, and the FW DPs aren’t that hard to pull out (and if you’re going for summoning, there’s no good reason not to have Corbax, or Samus if you’re going the KDK route, in your collection), the only virtually impossible summons are Skarabrand and Fateweaver.

        • Randy Randalman

Well, these aren’t regular DP’s or GD’s. These are mortal Primarchs who attained demonhood but were allowed to maintain some semblance of their free will and mortality. I don’t think they could be summoned anyway. In fact, most other demons resent them because they were mortals put in stations above them. Almost like an executive position opening in a company, but the company hires someone from outside with no experience.

          • Fergie0044

Or rather, instead of promoting someone within the company, instead the boss puts his adopted son in charge.

        • Rasheed Jones

Skarbrand and Kairos are actually LITERALLY impossible (you can’t roll 19 or 20 on 3d6) which is kinda dumb. The Bloodthirster and Lord of Change are also real hard to summon. Also yeah the FW daemon princes lack Heretic Astartes, what I was saying was that all the Heretic Astartes DPs lack the Daemonic Ritual ability. I could have been more clear about that.

          • 301stFeinminsterArmoured

If you’re devoting a slot in your list to them, it’s a moot point, because they’d already be on the field. I’d rather have the flexibility of pulling Morty out of the box when I need him without being stuck with him in games where his size and point cost become a liability (if he has more than 10 wounds, he’s not playing Kill Point missions).

  • georgelabour

I hope we get some other model kit with more of those nurgling cherubs, and the two ‘familiars’ hanging out on the base.

I can see those becoming coveted conversion pieces.

    • euansmith

It would be great if GW or FW brought out a pile of Loyalist and Chaos Cherubim to dress up models with. Hopefully creepier and better modeled than the past ones they’ve made.

    • Slaanesh Devotee

I think the cherub nurglings will be a special thing just to accompany ‘Nurgle’s Angel’, rather than being a new recurring feature.

    • Brettila

Funny, I’ll be leaving them off, for a variety of reasons.

      • georgelabour

Is one of those reasons involving a objective marker made out of wounded guardsmen, and nurglings with sharp sticks?

  • Brett Kirk

I’m mainly looking forward to seeing people other than GW paint these. Their paint jobs are definitely good, but I’m just not in to their style they’ve been doing. It’s a little cartoony. There are all kinds of little details on the models that are just green when they could be much more Nurgly

    • SYSTem050

Think it might also be something to do with the photography. My local store have painted up the starter death guard using the prescribed colour scheme and they look much better than the photographed ones for whatever reason

    • Brettila

Their Nurgle schemes are too colirful.

  • Michael Garrett

    the smog coming from the
    ports is a cool detail.

  • Snord

I couldn’t work out what was going on with Mortarion’s face until I saw these photos. Now the model makes sense. I quite like it. It’s sort of graceful, in an ugly, droopy sort of way. In fact, this model and the DG Termies may finally drag me back to Chaos (I’m not really a fan of Chaos, but have a soft, squishy spot for Nurgle).

    • Xodis

Should probably get that checked by a doctor….just saying.

  • Nyyppä

Well, if there is a way to clear those canisters on his face it’s all good. If not…..well, it’s not like I’m a DG player anyway so no problem really.

  • dinodoc

Do we get to see the heart Lord Kaldor Draigo carved the previous Grand Master’s name into?

  • DJ860

“Now you know a lot much about moth wing veins”

That’s made my day somehow, thanks for the lol.

    • Ugh – I hate it when I do that. Fixed

  • Wolf-Assassin

when was Magnus the red and triumvirate of the Primarch released?
BOLS did unboxing videos in the begining of December and beginning of March, if these dates are right i predict Mortarion will be released in the end of this month or right in the beginning of the next and we will get a loyal Primarch by the end of this year.

  • miniwar monger

On first glance Morti looks great. But his heads seems kinda small and the legs awefully long !

Can wait for the final release.

  • GiftoftheMagi

  • Xodis

Im guessing a different head and possibly different wings for options. Maybe a different weapon, but I doubt it.

  • Xodis

I like it, and the thought of having 2 Deamon Primarchs are the table sounds fun, dont care if I have nothing else on the table lol.

    • Red_Five_Standing_By

Imagine Magnus, Typhus, Skarbrand and the Fateweaver on the same table!

      • Xodis

Imagine? Hell, Im planning it! lol

Actually Ill probably end up with Magnus, Mortorian, Keeper of Secrets, and Skarbrand. That is until they release Deamon Prince Angron and Deamon Prince Fulgrim.

        • Red_Five_Standing_By

I can’t wait until you can use all… 6 of the living Daemon Prince Primarchs (Angry Ron, Morty, Ful-snake, Cyclops, Lorgy and Putamachine).

          • Xodis

Yeah, I try not to think about that because either Ill be an old man that cant even remember to enjoy it, or Ill be dead first lol

          • Red_Five_Standing_By

I think we will probably see all of the kits come out in the next 5 or 10 years.

            I hope Khan is a Motorcycle-Centaur 😉

          • Xodis

lol I hope you are right on both of these

          • 301stFeinminsterArmoured

            Better nickname: Prettyhatemachine.

        • georgelabour

I’d take my knights up against that.

Imagine the glory they’d gain, and the tales they’d sing of their victory!…

Right before everyone died of eighty different forms of face rot, and all the suits turned into piles of chihuahuas.

          • Xodis

Win or lose that would be one fun battle….probably go by pretty quick with only 10 models on the table lol

      • LankTank

Only if they are yours on the table! Vs them? No thanks lol. All it would take is 2 nurgling squads and you would have a LOW detachment and a patrol detachment and still have points left over for a 2k list.
        Oh god!…

  • I_am_Alpharius

WOW Mortarion is impressively awesome. While I like the ‘Eayy metal painting style I can wait to see what some of the competition painters do with the kit

High odds that that other model is Typhus. I would hazard if it is, then the kit comes with two head options – Bare and helmeted.

  • Ve Ly Pè

Somehow he looks a bit too “marine-y” to me…

  • PiotrekEtoo

Would his wings make like flap sound or rather go like buzz…

    • Snord

They probably sound like a thousand Bogong moths going up and down the window on a hot summer night, as they try vainly to reach the street light outside…
