40K: Mortarion Unboxing
The Daemon Prince Primarch of Nurgle, Mortarion, is here and we’re taking a deep-dive into this box full of goodies!
Mortarion, Primarch of the Death Guard and Daemon Prince of Nurgle is heading to the tabletop. We’ve got a copy of the kit already and let me just say that it’s down right intoxicating:
Games Workshop has been crushing it with these new Primarch Kits. Magnus and Guilliman were ARE show-stopping. Mortarion is no different. Not only is this kit massive, it’s just oozing with details like only a Death Guard unit can. Battle-damage, pox-marks, divots, dents, fumes and flame – it’s got it all. I mean, just look at Mortarion’s face above – it’s gross in all the right stylistic ways!
“Oh that’s just cause it’s painted!” Sure, but even the bare plastic is really impressive. The materials GW uses hold that detail really well and are easy to work with. Also, thanks to how they sculpt and produce these kits, they are able to do things that are just ahead of everyone else in the game. When you assemble this model all the the seams are hidden in really smart ways. This isn’t new for Games Workshop but that doesn’t mean it’s any less impressive from a technical stand point. That’s another thing that’s really impressive the more you think about it: the quality and consistency of these kits (all of the newer, large models) is just fantastic.
If Mortarion had come out a year ago it would have blown everyone’s mind. Now – as impressive as this kit is – it’s almost becoming routine. It’s Games Workshop’s fault! As a fan of just building models I feel like we’re being spoiled. I have to remind myself to take a step back and look at what everyone else is also doing to remind myself just how amazing these kits have become. And folks, when you see Mortarion in person it’s going to be very hard to NOT be impressed.
Pictures just don’t do him justice. Video helps. But nothing will be as good as seeing it live. Mortarion hit stores next week and you’ll get a chance to see it for yourself. If you get a chance to go to your FLGS and see it – DO IT. You’ll be thanking yourself you did. If you’re a Death Guard player, I would say that this model is your centerpiece model. In your entire army if you’re going to splurge on ONE thing with this release, other than the book, Mortarion better be at the top of that list. I haven’t even touched on the rules but he’s a beat-stick and worth every point in game. He will go toe-to-toe with pretty much anything else on the tabletop and has a strong chance of being able to walk away, too.
